President's Message |
Our eyes were watching Chardon
|
 | | Carrie Buchanan |
It has been quite a week for journalists in Cleveland, as well as for students, professors and communicators of all sorts. For those journalists who were sent to cover the drama that unfolded all week in Chardon, congratulations on a job well done, under difficult conditions and tight deadlines. And for those (sometimes the same people) whose families were dealing with the shock and grieving the losses, please accept our sympathy.
In my own classes at John Carroll University - and I'm sure this was true in classrooms all over Northeast Ohio - there was grief, there were even tears at times, as we all struggled to come to terms with a violent eruption in our own extended community. We saw how admirably the community came together in Chardon, and we felt better, knowing that.
I wrote about Chardon in my blog, "dis.location," this week because my area of research is the "sense of place" and how news media contribute to that. I started the blog several years ago, when I moved here from Ottawa, Canada, as a way to explore the different senses of place and locality I have encountered in different cities. There is no doubt that Chardon has a new image as a result of this week's happenings. To read more about how that image has changed and what the town's enduring legacy may be, just click on the hyperlinked name (dis.location) above, and give it a read. Please comment, if you feel so moved.
I also discuss, in this week's entry on Chardon, the role that journalists have played in covering the tragedy, and my hope that you will continue to work on making sense of this in the weeks and months to come. I covered similar stories in my newspaper career, and from that I know well that this week's coverage is probably just the beginning.
You can always find a link to my two blogs from my personal website, which is linked to below my signature on every column. (The other blog is called "Is Journalism Over?")
Meanwhile, our thoughts go out to everyone in Chardon. We are thinking of you and sharing, as much as we can, your sense of grief and loss.
Carrie Buchanan

| 2012 Porter Scholarship Competition Begins |
The letters have gone out to local high schools and with that, the competition for the 2012 Phillip W. Porter Scholarship has begun.
The Cleveland chapter's annual service project, a four-year, $1,000-a-year scholarship, will be awarded to a graduating high school senior planning to practice journalism after university.
Each school - public, private or parochial - in the six Northeast Ohio counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula, Lorain, Median and Geauga is asked to nominate one student, who must then submit an application with the required documentation.
Applications must be in the hands of Scholarship Committee Chair Anup Kumar of Cleveland State University on April 6. Remember that you must be nominated by your school in order to apply, so contact the person responsible for your school newspaper or your guidance counsellor. If you can't find anyone who received our letter by the end of this week, contact Kumar at a.kumar64@csuohio.edu and we'll be happy to send another. Kumar is also the contact person if you have any other questions about the Porter Scholarship. This is the 48th year for our scholarship competition and we are very proud of the many students we have helped along the road to a journalism career.

"Why is it important that we have news media that are independent of the government?"
|
That's the question for this year's national SPJ High School Essay Contest.
In a country as free as ours, it's easy to forget how important independent media are in a society. This question is designed to stimulate students to think about the meaning of that freedom.
Do you know a student who can answer it well in 300-500 words by March 8?
The first place award is a $1,000 scholarship; second place is $500 and third is $300.
All students enrolled in Grades 9-12 are eligible. To qualify, all local entries must be double-spaced, typed or handwritten, and sent, postmarked by March 8, to:
