Tips, advice flow for freelancers from panel of successful writers
It was an evening of sharing, Wednesday night, when John Ettorre, Mary Mihaly, Maria Shine Stewart and Eileen Beal took the stage for our program entitled "Entrepreneurial Journalism." As Stewart noted, Independence was not only the location but also the theme: Writers who dream of working at their own pace, on their own ideas, filled the room to listen intently and ask questions of four local journalists who have made this dream come true, launching and running their own successful writing businesses. A few of those tips, which I jotted down along with everyone else - the number of note-takers in the room was about the highest I've ever seen, despite the fact I'm a college professor - are listed here: - "Get dressed," Mihaly advised. Don't spend the day in your pajamas, even if you're at home.
- "You can't thrive in a vacuum," was Mihaly's second tip. Join writers' organizations like SPJ, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and FreelanceSuccess.com. Go to conferences and programs for writers. The others you'll meet are colleagues. They can help you a lot.
- "It's all about relationships," Mihaly stressed. Build relationships with editors, sources, potential sources and keep in touch with them. Be responsive when they need you, not just when you need them. "Contact people. It always yields something," she said.
- "You have to be a CEO," and this means taking care of your business, was Mihaly's fourth tip. Don't give your work away or under-price it. Consult with colleagues (see #2) about pricing.
- "Be flexible. You can't be a prima dona," Mihaly stressed fifth. Sometimes you aren't thrilled with the project you're offered, but don't turn down "good, honest work."
- Specialize, Beal advised. She started out writing on all sorts of different topics, but realized she could make more money and get more personal satisfaction by "digging deeper" into one topic and re-using her research to aim stories at different markets.
- Beal gave additional tips learned from working "both sides of the desk" -- that is, as an editor as well as a writer. "Know your strengths," was her second tip. When choosing what to specialize in, choose something that plays to your strengths.
- "Write what you want to know" or know about, Beal added. She has thoroughly enjoyed her writing career, she said, because "they paid me to learn" about things she wanted to know.
- Stewart, bless her, posted her talk in her blog, Wordsanctuary Revisited - it's the entry for Feb. 23. Check it out for a rundown on the five Cs of independent writing: Confidence, Creativity, Crisis, Collaboration and Community. She had lots of great ideas too!
We at SPJ Cleveland thank everyone involved in the panel for their generosity and enthusiasm. I think all who were there would agree!

The Cleveland chapter's annual service project, a four-year, $1,000-a-year scholarship, will be awarded to a graduating high school senior planning to practice journalism after university.
Each school - public, private or parochial - in the six Northeast Ohio counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula, Lorain, Median and Geauga is asked to nominate one student, who must then submit an application with the required documentation.
Applications must be in the hands of Scholarship Committee Chair Anup Kumar of Cleveland State University on April 6. Remember that you must be nominated by your school in order to apply, so contact the person responsible for your school newspaper or your guidance counsellor. If you can't find anyone who received our letter by the end of this week, contact Kumar at a.kumar64@csuohio.edu and we'll be happy to send another. Kumar is also the contact person if you have any other questions about the Porter Scholarship. "Why is it important that we have news media that are independent of the government?"
|
That's the question for this year's national SPJ High School Essay Contest.
In a country as free as ours, it's easy to forget how important independent media are in a society. This question is designed to stimulate students to think about the meaning of that freedom.
Do you know a student who can answer it well in 300-500 words by March 8?
The first place award is a $1,000 scholarship; second place is $500 and third is $300.
All students enrolled in Grades 9-12 are eligible. To qualify, all local entries must be double-spaced, typed or handwritten, and sent, postmarked by March 8, to:

Members' Milestones |
Jerry Masek: 35 years with SPJ
Jerry Masek received his 35 year pin from SPJ this week. But what we're most grateful for, here at SPJ Cleveland, is the incredible amount he has done for SPJ in those years. He's been president of this chapter more than once, and when he was president, we earned a national Chapter of the Year award for exceptional programming and other activity. Indeed, one of Jerry's projects was to start Writer's Week, now edited by Carrie Buchanan and Elaine Wilson.
Masek has also been active at the national level, where he chaired the Membership Committee of SPJ's national board of directors.
An award winning photojournalist, Masek has been active in private and public sector communications for the past 40 years. He's a Cleveland Press alumnus, as we learned last summer when we feted the late, great newspaper.
As well as photojournalism, his projects extend to media relations, speech writing, newsletter editing, and newspaper journalism.
Masek's work has been found nationwide in the National Star tabloid, in Passenger Transport, Metro Magazine and Public Gaming magazine, and online at donnanowak.com, rideRTA.com and MBSConline.org.
In our region, his pictures have been published by the Associated Press, Balanced Living magazine and the Cleveland Women's Journal. They have been in 10 newspapers in Ohio and Indiana, and on TV stations that broadcast Ohio Lottery drawings.
Congratulations, Jerry, and may you stick around for another 35 years!
