President's Message
Porter Scholarship 2012 launched
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan
The letters have gone out to local high schools and with that, the competition for the 2012 Phillip W. Porter Scholarship has begun. The Cleveland chapter's annual service project, a four-year, $1,000-a-year scholarship, will be awarded to a graduating high school senior planning to practice journalism after university.
Each school - public, private or parochial - in the six Northeast Ohio counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula, Lorain, Median and Geauga is asked to nominate one student, who must then submit an application with the required documentation.

Applications are due April 6, and must be in the hands of Scholarship Committee Chair Anup Kumar of Cleveland State University at that time. You can find all the details, plus a downloadable application form, on our chapter website, where you should click on the
2012 Porter Scholarship tab. Remember, however, that you must be nominated by your school in order to apply. So please contact the person responsible for your school newspaper or your guidance counselor. If you can't find anyone who received our letter by the end of this week, you can contact Dr. Kumar at a.kumar64@csuohio.edu and we'll be happy to send another. Dr. Kumar is also the contact person if you have any other questions about the Porter Scholarship.

This is the 48th year for our scholarship competition and we are very proud of the many students we have helped along the road to a journalism career.

Before signing off, I should remind everyone of our upcoming program, on Wednesday night, "The Journalist as Entrepreneur." See the box directly below this one for details, and please remember to register if you plan to attend. Admission is free!

 Writers & Graphic Designers
as  Collaborators

Together writers and graphic designers create messages that reach out from the page and grab people. To succeed they need each other the way a pitcher needs a catcher.

At the February general meeting of CDPUG - the Cleveland Digital Publishers Users Group - on Feb. 23, SPJer John Ettorre, an award-winning writer, editor, marketing consultant and writing coach, will address ways writers and graphic designers can collaborate better. He will explore how we can:

  • Spend time to understand what each contributor does and how their work adds to the whole.
  • Better understand where one contributor's work ends and another's begins and how to help at the intersection.
  • create the atmosphere of learning and experimentation that leads to true innovation.

John's talks often sell out so it's best to arrive early to ensure you will have a place at what promises to be a popular event.

Date: Feb. 23

Location: New Horizons Computer Learning Center

Time: Reception Starts at 6:00 p.m. Meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

"Why is it important that we have news media that are independent of the government?"

That's the question for this year's national SPJ High School Essay Contest.

In a country as free as ours, it's easy to forget how important independent media are in a society. This question is designed to stimulate students to think about the meaning of that freedom.

Do you know a student who can answer it well in 300-500 words by March 8?

The first place award is a $1,000 scholarship; second place is $500 and third is $300.

All students enrolled in Grades 9-12 are eligible. To qualify, all local entries must be double-spaced, typed or handwritten, and sent, postmarked by March 8, to:

The Black Hole Awards. Shining light on what would otherwise stay in the dark

Every year SPJ delivers an award for the most heinous violations of our right, as citizens, to know what our governments are doing.

If you know of something, done in 2011, that is so repressive it violates the public's right to know and endangers public welfare, you have until Feb. 21 to submit its nomination.

Last year's winner was the Utah Legislature and Gov. Gary Herbert.  They passed a piece of freedom of information legislation that:

  • charges high fees for search time, redaction, administrative overhead and legal reviews.
  • forces citizens to prove that public records are indeed public before they will be made available.
  • Makes a large number of electronic records secret including text messages and other correspondence of government officials.

What happened in 2011 that tops that?

Leo Jeffres blogs as he travels the world

The riverboat trip from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was quiet. Houses bordered each side of the watercourse, and it seemed there should be curbs and driveways in front of them, not docks. The water lapped against the boat. The guide murmured history.

Suddenly, like an exclamation mark, a car horn blared again and again. Then peace returned.

You can experience this moment because Leo Jeffres was there, and he is blogging with words, pictures and videos throughout his trip.

Jeffries set out Jan. 16 for Ethiopia. By the time he returns in mid-March he will have covered India, Cambodia, the Philippines and Australia. Then he'll rest in Hawaii before returning home to spring.

The blog is set up so you can follow from the beginning or dip into a single impression, far removed from here and today.

FCC needs researchers to examine media access, barriers for women, minorities

The FCC wants to know how Americans access news and information and what barriers exist for women, minorities and small businesses in the media world. The research effort was spearheaded by Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, who used to run a South Carolina newspaper focused on the African American community.

"This type of inquiry should have been a fundamental aspect of the FCC's policy strategy all along," she said. "Does limited participation in the communications industry by women and minorities have an impact on whether all Americans have their critical information needs met? This commission is committed to answering this question."

To download the "Request for Quotations" for the study click on the link here. It will download automatically as a Word document. This is for people who are qualified to DO this study, giving instructions on how to file their proposal and what they expect to be paid. It also asks for suggestions on additional studies that might be needed.
