Keeping tabs on the disinformers

My assistant editor Elaine Wilson and I have both been sick this week, hence the lateness of Writer's Week. But illness has not prevented us from noting the excellent events coming up this week and in the month ahead. Check out the writeups below and the summary at right, for all that's happening. It's a great lineup.

Another thing I did this week is to sign on to an important initiative, joined by some other SPJ people and publicized by the Columbia Journalism Review and others. (Brief digression: I cannot say enough about CJR. Check it out
here online, and subscribe for $20 to support their non-profit efforts to present and critique the major stories and issues of the day. If you can't subscribe, you can still get daily email updates for free.)

Back to the initiative: It's called TrueTies.org and it has asked the New York Times and other newspapers to fully disclose the identities of their Op-Ed contributors. What spurred the initial 50 signatories to write a letter to the Times (and invite others to sign on at their website) was a piece by the Manhattan Institute's Robert Bryce that calls renewable energy bad for the environment. You would think someone writing a piece that goes against all the current science would at least be questioned by the media outlet printing his opinion, but the New York Times apparently asked nothing - and certainly said nothing - about Bryce's funding history and background. And the NYT is not alone.

"The bio line (in the NYT) referred to him as 'senior fellow' at the Manhattan Institute. CNN published a piece by Mr. Bryce that failed to identify him at all," TrueTies.org notes on its website. Had these two media done any research at all they would have found that the Manhattan Institute has significant ties to Big Energy.

"Here's the problem," TrueTies.org notes. "Mr. Bryce's employer, the Manhattan Institute, has received nearly $3 million in funding from foundations and companies tied to fossil fuels, including Koch Industries and ExxonMobil. Mr. Bryce defended ExxonMobil in the piece CNN published."

Surely, they ask, this potential conflict of interest should at least be noted in the bio that follows his signature? And shouldn't it be mentioned in broadcasts? TrueTies.org recommends that every media outlet that accepts contributions from non-staff pundits require that they sign a disclosure form, whose ingredients are outlined on the website. In the case of the Times, as CJR notes it its article, it is something they do require of every freelance writer. Perhaps not Op-Ed writers, though.

If you'd like to sign on to this ethics initiative as well, check out the TrueTies.org website. It's something I am proud to support. Frankly, I'm aghast that we even have to mention it.

OHBA Law & Media Conference: From The Business of News to Editorial Cartoons
This year's Ohio State Bar Association Law & Media Conference on Friday, Oct. 14, is set to challenge and enlighten us on issues ranging from copyright law for journalists to the First Amendment vs. editorial cartoons gone digital.

Srinandan Kasi, former counsel for the Associated Press and current EVP and COO of the News Licensing Group in New York City will launch this year's event with his address "Measure to Monetize: The Business of News."
In one of the concurrent workshops that follow, Prof. Tori Ekstrand of Bowling Green State University will moderate a panel discussion, "Should the Law Save Journalism," about ways we can legally and legislatively protect news content.

Featuring many
Ohio journalists, lawyers, judges and academics as presenters and panelists, this year's day-long conference is packed with seminars and panels that address questions like:
  • Can the traditional news industry contain costs and combat online piracy?
  • Should website operators reveal the identity of anonymous posters?
  • How much farther can the door close on public records?

Panels will also discuss the latest issues on social media and evidence, the danger of crime reporting and what happens to free speech when a talk show host hits a sore spot.

SPJ's Central Ohio Chapter is one of the sponsors of this day of enlightenment, along with with the Ohio State Bar Association, Ohio Association of Broadcasters and the Ohio Newspaper Association.

Award-winning journalist
to speak at FutureChurch fundraiser

Jason Berry, who picked up one of SPJ's prestigious Sigma Delta Chi awards Sept. 24 in Foreign Correspondence Reporting, will be in Cleveland Oct. 13 to speak at a fundraiser for the Catholic reform group FutureChurch.

Berry's SDX award was for a piece in the National Catholic Register on "Money and Influence Peddling at the Vatican." It forms the basis of chapters in his latest book,

A Roman Catholic himself, Berry nevertheless turns his investigative eye on the church, in this instance following the money relentlessly. His 1992 book, "Lead us not into Temptation: Catholic Priests and the Sexual Abuse of Children," took on the scandal that led to today's financial turmoil. His new book covers the financial consequences, such as the mass sell-off of real estate to cover losses incurred as the church was forced to make $2 billion in payments to clergy abuse victims in the U.S. alone.

Despite the fact that two chapters in the book are devoted to the Cleveland diocese, there has not yet been a review in the Plain Dealer. The book's Cleveland exposés alone will make for a very interesting evening.

"No major book has examined the church's financial underpinnings and practices with such journalistic force," says the FutureChurch announcement of Berry's visit. "Amid mounting diocesan bankruptcies, bishops have been selling off whole pieces of the infrastructure - churches, schools, commercial properties - while the nephew of one of the Vatican's most powerful cardinals engaged in a lucrative scheme to profiteer off the enormous downsizing of American church wealth."

The fundraiser takes place at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 13. Tickets can be purchased online here.
