After neglecting to enter the competition last year and winning no awards as a result, The Plain Dealer has outdone everyone else this year, landing 25 awards, by my count, in the Newspapers (circulation over 100,000) category, including Best Daily Newspaper. Also in our area, we congratulate the Akron Beacon-Journal on its nine awards and The Blade of Toledo on its seven, as well as the Toledo Free Press on its win for Best Weekly Newspaper. In the Newspapers under 100,000 circulation category, still more congratulations are in order for people in our area: The Chronicle-Telegram with 12 awards, The Morning Journal with the Best Newspaper award and several others, and kudos to Cleveland Magazine, the Cleveland Jewish News, The Medina County Gazette and Cleveland Scene - particularly Scene's D.X. Ferris, who won Best Reporter in Ohio in this category. Trade magazines from this area that won awards include Inside Business, Smart Business Cleveland and LP Gas Magazine, all located in Cleveland , plus Farm and Dairy, whose offices are in Salem. Among local TV broadcasters, honors went to WFMJ and WKBN/WYTV in Youngstown and to WJW, WEWS and WKYC in Cleveland. In radio, WKSU in Kent, and WCPN and WTAM in Cleveland won awards. Some of these broadcasters and print publications also took honors in the Online category, where Scene & clevescene.com, Ohio Magazine, Ideastream, Cleveland Magazine and the Akron Beacon-Journal were local winners. Among collegiate winners, congratulations to The BG News at Bowling Green State University, which took second place in the Best College Daily Newspaper category, and to Kate Noftsinger of The BG News for Best College Opinion Writing. In the Best College Non-Daily Newspaper category there was an upset this year, with The Collegian at Ashland University besting perennial winner The Carroll News at John Carroll University, which placed second. The Awards list can be downloaded directly here, thanks to the Nonprofit Newswire. We owe a vote of thanks to the many volunteer SPJers involved in organizing the competition, headed by Mike Lorz of Columbus. The Awards Luncheon, when all these winners will be honored, takes place Oct. 22 at Windows on the River, starting with a reception at noon.
