On the evening of Sept. 6, Mike Walter - the journalist featured in this excerpt from "Breaking News, Breaking Down," who also directed the movie - will speak at Cleveland State University and screen his multi-award-winning film about those who covered 9-11 and Hurricane Katrinia. The emotional aftermath for journalists who cover traumatic events is something we don't tend to speak of in the business, but on this occasion SPJ Cleveland will do so in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9-11 and the sixth of Hurricane Katrina.

"Mike Walter is in great demand as a powerful motivational speaker," the film's website says. "His talks and screenings about 9/11 have touched people all across the country and the world. His 9/11 account is a story of how one can triumph over trauma and tragedy. It is a story of resiliency and hope in the face of adversity."

Plan to come out on the evening of Sept. 6 at Cleveland State University for this tribute to those who cover traumatic events. More details on the time and the exact location at CSU will be available shortly. Meanwhile, do visit the film's website and explore its many pages of fascinating material.

President's Message

A national network is a real advantage

Carrie Buchanan

Last week I attended the national convention of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication in St. Louis. And guess who was there? All kinds of SPJ people I have met over the years, all of them  as supportive and helpful as can be. We had a breakfast meeting of SPJ advisers who work with student chapters at colleges and universities across the country, hosted by the national SPJ organization. Joe Skeel, the national executive director, and George Daniels, who heads the committee that supports SPJ student chapters, were both there - I've met them before and probably will again at the national convention in New Orleans in Sept. 24-27. (Register here by Aug. 31 for Earlybird rate!)

In several of the conference's media law sessions I encountered David Cuillier, a national trainer on Freedom of Information law and other access-to-information issues for SPJ, as well as vice-head and program chair of AEJMC's Law and Policy Division. He teaches at the University of Arizona in Phoenix and despite the huge distance between us, he visited Cleveland and spoke to us in June 2010.

Everywhere you go, you'll have automatic friends and helpful colleagues because of your SPJ membership. I found SPJers friendly and supportive long before I became very active in the organization. In fact, I became very active because of that collegiality and support. That's just the way we are in SPJ: working to help journalists and journalism, to make all of us the best we can be.
