Save the date: June 30 annual meeting and Second Annual Nostalgia Night!
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan

Remember how much fun we had last summer, sharing memories of days gone by at our Nostalgia Night?

In case you don't remember this detail (or, shudder, you actually missed the event), it was also our annual meeting, when the membership was asked to vote on a new slate of officers for the 2010-11 year. That only took a few minutes, and it meant the membership got to meet the board, share food and drink and, best of all, hear and tell some great stories.

Well, it's time to do it all over again, though this time we won't have Alan Stephenson of John Carroll University and his wonderful collection of antique cameras, recorders, mics, and stories from the early days of television in Cleveland. However, we do have plans for another exciting Nostalgia Night, which we can't yet reveal. For now, make sure you mark June 30 on the calendar and plan to come out and enjoy it! Also, please check out the bios of the nominees for our new board, below, and be prepared to come and vote if you're a member. If you're not a member, you might consider joining, just to participate -- wait till you see the details!

One crucial detail needs to be mentioned right here and now: our current Writer's Week editor - myself - is the nominee for chapter president and, if elected, will not be able to produce Writer's Week during the coming year. We are looking for a member who's able to take it over JUST FOR THE YEAR. I love doing it, and really want to take the reins back after my stint as president. I just cannot do both, (as my academic tenure committee and my husband have reminded me on more than one occasion).

Here's what makes Writer's Week a fairly easy job for which you get oodles of credit: First, we have a very capable  assistant editor during the academic year (she's off during the summer and school exam periods). Currently, our assistant editor is Emily Gaffney, a John Carroll student who was recently named editor-in-chief of The Carroll News. Emily does at least half the work and, if she has to step down with her increasing responsibility, she and I both promise to find you a replacement, since we both know a number of  outstanding student copy editors. Second, the entire operation is online, so you don't have to be in the same place as Emily -- I have even produced Writer's Week while traveling! Everything comes in by email and we have an online Gmail account, to which I send things for Emily to include whenever they come to me. We use Constant Contact, which is also entirely online, and I have already designed the template, which we have used for the past year so the kinks are worked out. The tools and technical help the Constant Contact people give are outstanding, but frankly, you probably won't need them often! I will provide training, and it's pretty simple to use! With all that help from Emily and Constant Contact, Writer's Week should only take an hour each Friday -- or whenever you want to do it each week; you can even change the day if you wish. Please let me know by email if you'd be interested. As I said, I find it really fun.

Nominations for SPJ Cleveland's
new board of directors for 2011-12

We are still not sure of the date of our annual meeting, but preparations are underway and we'll announce it as soon as possible. We do want to share with our members the names, photos and bios of those who have agreed to stand for election to our new board of directors. The new board will be elected at the annual meeting and to serve for one year, starting July 1 or as close as possible to that date. We would be happy to receive the names of any other nominees at spjcleveland@gmail.com or at the annual meeting. Please submit a bio and photo with your nomination so we can share it in Writer's Week as well.
