Last week, at the downtown Cleveland DoubleTree, we had the privilege of witnessing two seasoned journalists receive the Society of Professional Journalists, Cleveland Pro Chapter, Distinguished Service Award. Jae-Won Lee and Brent Larkin have had long careers in journalism, and they sought to achieve excellence in academia and in the newsroom, respectively. CSU's Rick Perloff told heroic stories of a young Lee in Korea, his later experiences in academia in America, and other tales that brought Lee's distinguished career to life. Dick Feagler's affection and admiration for his colleague, Brent Larkin, was apparent in his speech honoring his longtime colleague. For the text of Perloff's speech and a story on Larkin's career by SPJ board member Rich Exner, click on this link to our website. This year's DSAs both deserved to be recognized for their service to SPJ and to journalism. At the same luncheon last Thursday, we also recognized this year's Porter Scholarship recipient, Savannah Kannberg, who said she published her first newspaper when she was six, and no one cared if she made stuff up. She's learned over the years that "making stuff up" is not acceptable. She is a poised and talented young woman, and we are confident that she will also strive for excellence each and every day. For a photo and bio of Kannberg, click here to go to the website.
Excellence is an attitude of doing one's best at everything in life; as these three have shown, the goal is achievable.
