Journalists constitute one of the most unappreciated, underpaid and over-worked tribes. To recognize their contributions, every year the Cleveland chapter presents the Distinguished Service Awards. This year's DSA recipients are Brent Larkin, retired director of The Plain Dealer's Editorial Page, and Jae-won Lee, professor-emeritus of journalism at Cleveland State University.
For many years, Dr. Lee also chaired our chapter's Porter Scholarship Committee.
The awards will be presented by Dick Feagler, prominent columnist and Emmy-winning TV host, and Richard Perloff, director of CSU's School of Communication, at a luncheon reception on May 12 at the Doubletree Hotel, Lakeside Avenue in Cleveland.
Let's salute them by attending the event. Reservations, $35 per person, may be made at Eventbrite.
To encourage up-and-coming journalists, the chapter offers a $4,000 Philip W. Porter Scholarship every year. This amount is spread over four years. This year's scholarship recipient is Savannah S. Kannberg, a graduating senior at Solon High School, who will be recognized at the event. For more information about the luncheon reception, please contact our chapter's Secretary-Treasurer Tom Moore at tmoore56@msn.com. Let's switch gears. We are in the process of forming a new board for the 2011-12 term. I'd like to urge those with hidden talents to join the board and make it a vibrant one. We can always use fresh ideas. Those interested in serving on the board, please feel free to contact me at canthony@lorainccc.edu. Cliff Anthony Past President |

OSU athletic director to speak at Central Ohio SPJ's Founder's Day dinner
|
| |
The registration deadline has passed, but as a reminder to all those who registered for Founders Day 201, the Central Ohio Chapter of SPJ will celebrate Founders Day 2011 with a program featuring Gene Smith, director of the largest collegiate athletic department in the country, at The Ohio State University.

Nearly half of that is spent on the Buckeyes football program, which has won or shared the Big Ten title and earned a berth in a BCS bowl game every year since Smith was hired in 2005.
After hearing from Smith, the chapter will install board members, present college scholarships, high school journalism awards and its First Amendment, Brick Wall, Distinguished Service and Appreciation awards.
The night will include dinner, a cash bar, and a silent auction.
More information is available on the chapter website.
The event starts on May 9 at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and networking, followed by dinner and the program at 6:30 p.m. Location is the OSU Golf Club, 3609 Tremont Road, Upper Arlington, OH 43220.
