I have had lots of reasons to love networking with the journalism and writing community in the last few days.  It seems like the air is full of synchronicity, the way the conversations continue, just like the stories do.

I was reading Regina Brett's book, God Never Blinks, my book group's selection for this month, and 10 minutes after I got off the bus, I opened up an email from Regina thanking her supporters and announcing the book is out in paperback.  I can't wait to let people know (I'm doing it right now).

The Press Club/SPJ Mixer at Nighttown last night brought out lots of stories.Pete Hamill's recent appearance in Cleveland came up, and I was able to share some of Pete's wisdom because I was there.  Supported by Cuyahoga County Library and Cleveland State University, Writer's Center Stage brings readers and writers together.  Check out next year's speakers and join that conversation.

At Nighttown, a few of us were talking about books we are writing, and someone mentioned Paula McLain's success with The Paris Wife.We then started talking about the influence of CSU's Imagination Writers Conference on our local writing community. My application's been sitting on my desk - I have decided to send it in based on someone's recommendation last night.

Also at Nighttown, I mentioned Thomas Mulready's video interview with Paula, which was inspirational. Fellow Cool Cleveland writer Susan Schaul then provided me with some tips on how to videotape interviews (even though she's just beginning).SPJ Cleveland First Vice President and I learned a lot from Susan's experiences, and a seed was planted for a program next year.

We have experiences and stories to share. The monthly Press Club/SPJ mixers will continue at the iconic Nighttown on the last Thursday of every month.

The Distinguished Service Award/Porter Scholarship Luncheon is coming up on May 12 at the Doubletree (see story below).Join the conversation.

P.S.:Mansfield Frazier and I are hosting "Write Left," a Salon Workshop, at Visible Voice from 2-5 tomorrow. It's another conversation and it would be a bit of synchronicity if it's just what you want to do tomorrow.

OSU athletic director to speak at Central Ohio SPJ's
Founder's Day dinner
REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MONDAY!

The Central Ohio Chapter of SPJ will celebrate Founders Day 2011 with a program featuring Gene Smith, director of the largest collegiate athletic department in the country, at The Ohio State University.

The past few months have been difficult for the Ohio State University Athletic Department and, as athletic department director, Smith has had to deal with a lot of the fallout. Smith presides over a department that supports 36 sports and more than 1,000 athletes, with an annual operating budget in excess of $80 million a year. Nearly half of that is spent on the Buckeyes football program, which has won or shared the Big Ten title and earned a berth in a BCS bowl game every year since Smith was hired in 2005.

After hearing from Smith, the chapter will install board members, present college scholarships, high school journalism awards and its First Amendment, Brick Wall, Distinguished Service and Appreciation awards.

The night will include dinner, a cash bar, and a silent auction.

Tickets are $30. Reservation deadline is midnight on May 3. Reserve your tickets here. More information is available on the chapter website.

The event starts on May 9 at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and networking, followed by dinner and the program at 6:30 p.m. Location is the OSU Golf Club, 3609 Tremont Road, Upper Arlington, OH 43220.
