To all you would-be prizewinners of the photo contest, I'm sorry to say we have decided to postpone it. We love the idea and thank Audrey McCrone, Carrie Buchanan and the campus SPJ chapter at John Carroll University, as well as  our other board members, for putting together the pieces. Despite all our efforts, there was not enough interest. So we have decided our timing was off and that we will visit this idea again in the coming year.

In the meantime, keep reading Writer's Week to see what we have planned to entertain and enlighten you.
 
I was speaking with a fellow board member by telephone this afternoon. As with many of the organizations in which we volunteer, we have noticed a decline in the number of people who show up at events. We agreed that our own forays into professional associations and volunteer positions have helped us grow into who we are today. In the case of SPJ, we come to understand what other people involved in the field of journalism are doing, and what they expect, as we mingle with editors and publishers.

The memberships and positions we hold in professional organizations may look good on a resume and help us with our professional advancement, but the real reward is the immeasurable enrichment of our lives. We learn from each other and encourage each other. On the board level, we learn how to manage ideas, money, projects and people, and in the end our lives are more organized and together because of our involvement.
 
We grow from trying new things and from doing the work. It doesn't hurt at all.

Tips for future media success

The Cleveland State University campus chapter of SPJ has two wonderful events comingup that are open to all.

An all-star panel from the Plain Dealer, Fox 8 television, WTAM 1100 radio and online sports website www.NationalFootballAuthority.com will share their ideas about "Media Success in Journalism for the Future" at Cleveland State University on Thursday, April 21, from noon to 1 p.m.

Plain Dealer Editor Debra Adams Simmons and Dale Omori, Deputy Director of Photography, will join Kenny Crumpton, feature reporter at Fox 8 television, Nick Camino, radio personality on WTAM 1100, and Daniel Wolf, former writer for www.BleacherReports.com and new creator and editor of www.NationalFootballAuthority.com. Camino is a 2010 CSU graduate.

The panel will discuss convergence and what future journalists need to succeed. A light lunch will be provided. It will take place in the Urban Building's UR Atrium, at Cleveland State University.
 
On Thursday, April 28, the topic will shift to "How Cultures are Depicted in the News," a panel discussion with Annie Pu, publisher of the Erie Chinese Journal, Randy Michael from El Sol De Cleveland, and Pierre Bejjani from Profile News

This panel will address the differences various cultures experience with news coverage in the United States, versus their countries of origin, and freedom of speech. You will also be able to sample foods from various cultures. It's in MC 146. We'll have more on the location, directions, times and parking for this event in a future edition of Writer's Week.

Updated manual brings light

to government records


An updated version of the to the Sunshine Laws Manual was released by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost. This open government resource is a joint effort by both offices and serves as a guide to the state's laws concerning open meetings and public records.

The release of this new edition of the Sunshine Laws Manual coincided with Sunshine Week, March 13-19.

"Accountable and transparent government must function in the open," said DeWine. "The goal of the Sunshine Laws Manual is to help officials and Ohio citizens to better understand Ohio's open meetings and public records laws."

"The Yellow Book is the owner's manual for open government," Auditor Yost said.  "It tells you how to start it, operate it and keep it running smoothly." 

To view or download the updated manual, commonly referred to as the "Yellow Book," visit the website of the Ohio Attorney General or Ohio State Auditor.  

In addition to releasing this guide each year, the Attorney General's office and the Auditor's office promote open government by offering free Sunshine Law Trainings to public officials, as required by law. In 2010, the offices conducted 60 training sessions attended by more than 3,700 people.

Sunshine Law training sessions have been scheduled across the state for 2011. A full schedule is available here. The general public is welcome to attend these trainings.

This Sunshine Laws Manual is intended as a guide, but because much of open government law comes from case law or the interpretation of statutes by the courts, the office encourages local governments to seek legal guidance with specific questions.

WCPN/ideastream is seeking a first-rate reporter to be part of the "Impact of Government" project, a collaboration of (ideastream) WCPN Cleveland, WKSU-Kent, WOSU-Columbus and NPR. The reporter will track, explain and analyze existing and proposed laws, policies, funding, contracts and regulations affecting Ohio's schools and colleges. Candidates need to have a solid journalistic track record befitting the best in local public radio; have policy reporting and analysis experience; awareness of the big education issues; a thorough grasp of how state government works and how it may affect communities. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate that she/he can take potentially deadly dull topics like standardized testing, curriculum standards and teacher effectiveness and make them soar on radio. And we're looking for someone who can use data based research, public insight journalism and social media to enhance and expand their work on the air.
Requires a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources, identify important trends and collect and verify information. Minimum three years paid reporting experience required. Strongly prefer radio/on-air reporting experience. Others considered if can demonstrate adaptability to training and new technology. Knowledge of the current political and educational landscape in Ohio is preferred.
This position is a 16-month, grant-based position with a high probability of continuation.

IMPACT OF GOVERNMENT WEB JOURNALIST -

WCPN/ideastream is seeking a first-rate writer and communicator to be part of the "Impact of Government" project as its lead web-journalist-blogger. The project, a collaboration of (ideastream) WCPN-Cleveland, WKSU-Kent, WOSU-Columbus and NPR, aims to report and analyze the ways state government affects Ohioans, specifically in the realm of schools and colleges. It will closely examine education law, policy, performance and accountability practices and standards, funding, contracts and regulation.
The web-journalist-blogger will build a dedicated online following around the project's coverage, generate and moderate social engagement, aggregate content from others, produce original web content and provide on-air debriefs with local station anchors. Candidates should have a minimum of three years journalistic experience and a track record befitting the best in local public radio; political and/or policy reporting experience; awareness of the big education issues; a thorough grasp of how state government works.
In addition successful candidates will possess:
·Demonstrated excellence in journalistic analysis and interpretation.
·Demonstrated capability excellence in reporting, and writing and photography for the Web and for blogs. (A writing/blogging assessment will be administered as part of the hiring process)

Mentor Match-Up: A helping hand for young professionals

Transitioning from college to the workforce can be overwhelming for graduates. You may have questions about the industry, need advice about dealing with bosses and coworkers or just need someone to talk to about your work.  

 

Well, SPJ and Generation J Committee can help with that! They are pleased to announce the new SPJ Mentor Match-up program.   The program is for members who have graduated from college. Early career journalists are encouraged to join the program and receive feedback from experienced journalists.

Bolster your

social media toolkit


Social media and other online multimedia skills are becoming a necessary part of any professional communicator's toolkit. To show you how to better leverage these skills, the Cleveland Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) will host a luncheon and two-part program on the keys to using social media platforms.

Michael Pranikoff, Global Director Emerging Media, PR Newswire, will lead the first presentation, "Leveraging Social Media Platforms: Techniques and Tools to Monitor and Measure its Effectiveness."

The second session will feature Daniel Keckan, VP Sales & Marketing, Cinecraft,  on "Video Production on a Shoestring Budget."

The Fellowship Program begins on June 6th and ends on August 12th, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Cuyahoga County Public Policy Fellowship offers rigorous experimental-learning opportunities to students interesting in pursuing careers in public service. The program provides an in-depth view of how county government operates. Through this interactive program Fellows will have the opportunity to:
· Work with the County Executive's senior staff
· Work with County Council members and senior legislative staff
· Draft memoranda on emerging issues and initiatives
· Interact with and attend meetings with the County Executive, County Council members, and
senior-level staff from various county departments
· Learn about the work and mission of County departments and County Council through weekly
presentations by department directors and senior level staff
· Attend press conferences, County Council hearings, senior staff meetings, and strategic planning
sessions
· Develop new ideas for policies and initiatives
Eligibility
The Office of the County Executive encourages graduate students from all disciplines to apply. The
program seeks to attract candidates who are passionate about public service and have demonstrated a substantial commitment to achieving excellence through their scholarship, leadership ability, and
extracurricular involvement. You must be a current enrolled undergraduate or graduate student and a resident of Cuyahoga County to apply.

HIRING SIX FAN DEVELOPMENT INTERNS - CLEVELAND BROWNS
To begin: Approximately 1-2 weeks prior to training camp beginning.
To end: Approximately 1-2 weeks after training camp ends.

Hours of work required per week: 40-50 on average (depends on training camp schedule)
The Cleveland Browns Fan Development Intern will assist with the management of the Browns fan clubs (Browns Backers Worldwide & Kids Club) during the Browns 2011 Training Camp. Interns will gain experience completing real projects in the sports industry through this paid internship. Interns will help with the following duties:
· Assist with membership signups for all fan clubs
· Manage activations used to help increase membership and engagement
· Interact with fan base on a regular basis both in person and via phone and e-mail
· Set-up and breakdown necessary materials for training camp
· Monitor and handle general customer service requests as related to fan development
· Assist in planning and execution of all training camp related events
· Contribute ideas to help improve the fan development experience
Qualifications/Skills

THE HEIGHTS OBSERVER INTERN

The Heights Observer is a hyper-local, citizen-driven community news program that serves Cleveland Heights and University Heights, Ohio. The Heights Observer publishes in print monthly and continuously on the Web, www.heightsobserver.org.

The nonprofit FutureHeights publishes the Heights Observer. FutureHeights is dedicated to civic engagement and quality of life in the Heights.

The Heights Observer Intern is a full- or part-time position. General duties include covering local news and community news, writing news stories for print and Web publication, editing news stories, and working with volunteer writers, editors and photographers.

Responsibilities:

Contributing original news stories and photographs about community issues, meetings and events.
Editing submitted stories for publication and assisting in the final editing and proofing of the print version.
Composing and publishing the on-line e-mail news blast.
Creating audio podcasts of original news stories.
Working with local government, nonprofits, and community groups to update the community calendar.
Assisting in the administration of www.heightsobserver.org.
Assisting in other aspects of production and distribution.
Assisting in events planning for citizen-journalism training sessions.

Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have at least two years of journalism studies and experience in

working with volunteers and the general public. The ideal candidate will possess excellent written and verbal

communication skills, be proficient with digital media, be self-directed, and demonstrate a strong ability to work

well with a wide range of individuals and groups. Applicants should possess the ability to exercise independent

judgment and take initiative. Familiarity with and/or an interest in Cleveland Heights and University Heights is

preferred.

 Compensation: This is an unpaid, volunteer position. A small stipend may be available for qualified applicants.

The work schedule is flexible and will vary depending on events and projects.
