PHOTO CONTEST

The deadline has been extended to April 15 for submissions to the SPJ Cleveland/John Carroll University Photo Contest. It's open to everyone. You don't need to be an SPJ member to enter. You can find more details on our website, but here are the basics:

It's a juried photography contest with a wide range of categories, including a set of student categories. Contest entry fees ($10 for students, $15 for SPJ members and $25 for non-SPJ members) will go toward prize monies for category winners.

Submissions will be judged by five of the region's top photo editors: Plain Dealer Director of Photography Bill Gugliotta, Canton Repository Chief Photographer Stan Myers, Toledo Blade Chief Photographer Dave Zapotosky and Akron Beacon-Journal Director of Photography Kimberly Barth and Detroit Free Press Managing Editor of Digital Media and photographer Nancy Andrews.

Contest entrants will submit a digital copy as well as a large matted print for each entry, so photo editors can view the images remotely as needed to make their decisions.

A gallery showing of the prints will take place April 18-May 1 in the Dolan Hall Art Gallery at John Carroll University, 20700 North Park Blvd., University Heights, 44118. Gallery hours will be posted as soon as we get the schedule worked out. SPJ's John Carroll Campus Chapter will have members on hand whenever the gallery is open.

The formal closing ceremony will be held Sunday, May 1, from 2-4 p.m. also at Dolan Hall, in the Auditorum, which is near the Art Gallery so you'll be able to visit the Art Gallery and view the prints before or during the ceremony. Winners will be announced and an auction of the prints will take place. Light refreshments will be served, and our chapter plans to circulate a program brochure booklet that will include the bios of winning entrants as well as the bios and headshots of the contest judges.

Auction proceeds will benefit the Phillip W. Porter Scholarship Fund, which provides an annual scholarship for a high school student to study journalism during four years of college. The final sales of the prints will therefore be tax-deductible donations to the Philip W. Porter Scholarship by the contest entrants. For information about the Porter Scholarship, please see this link from our chapter website.

Updated manual brings light

to government records

An updated version of the to the Sunshine Laws Manual was released by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost. This open government resource is a joint effort by both offices and serves as a guide to the state's laws concerning open meetings and public records.

The release of this new edition of the Sunshine Laws Manual coincided with Sunshine Week, March 13-19.

"Accountable and transparent government must function in the open," said DeWine. "The goal of the Sunshine Laws Manual is to help officials and Ohio citizens to better understand Ohio's open meetings and public records laws."

"The Yellow Book is the owner's manual for open government," Auditor Yost said.  "It tells you how to start it, operate it and keep it running smoothly."

To view or download the updated manual, commonly referred to as the "Yellow Book," visit the website of the Ohio Attorney General or Ohio State Auditor.

In addition to releasing this guide each year, the Attorney General's office and the Auditor's office promote open government by offering free Sunshine Law Trainings to public officials, as required by law. In 2010, the offices conducted 60 training sessions attended by more than 3,700 people.

Sunshine Law training sessions have been scheduled across the state for 2011. A full schedule is available here. The general public is welcome to attend these trainings.

This Sunshine Laws Manual is intended as a guide, but because much of open government law comes from case law or the interpretation of statutes by the courts, the office encourages local governments to seek legal guidance with specific questions.

The inside scoop on crime and disaster in Cleveland

Cleveland crime and disaster expert John Stark Bellamy II is returning to town on April 4-16  for a series of library talks based in part on his new book, "The Last Days of Cleveland."

Bellamy will share stories about some of the gruesome crimes and scandalous events from Cleveland's past including the suicide of two West Park girls who died after eating their grandmother's rat poison; the wild prophecies of the Rowenites who announced the Feb. 6, 1925 midnight apocalypse and then gathered on rooftops in Garfield Heights to wait for the end; and the murder of George Saxton, playboy brother of President William McKinley whose sensational death and the murder trial of his mistress riveted an entire nation.

John Stark Bellamy comes by his taste for the sensational honestly. He grew up reading stories about Cleveland crimes and disasters written by his grandfather, Paul, editor of the Plain Dealer for 20 years, and his father, Peter who wrote for the Cleveland News and the Plain Dealer. The author of six story collections and two anthologies and the former history specialist for the Cuyahoga County Library system, Bellamy retired to Vermont in 2004. He visits Cleveland periodically to speak about his work.

Bellamy's talks will take place at several Cuyahoga County Library locations throughout the month of April. All locations, dates and time can be found on the online schedule. All events are free and open to the public.
