This debate will be fun!!
| |
 | | Cliff Anthony |
Our next chapter event is on March 24, and despite the serious topic, it's intended to be fun. "Wikileaks, the First Amendment and Journalistic Ethics," will feature an informal debate between SPJ Cleveland Past President Cliff Anthony and Board Member Anup Kumar. The topic grew out of an informed and philosophical exchange about the controversial website between the two local journalism professors (Anup is at Cleveland State and Cliff is at Lorain County Community College) at a recent SPJ Cleveland board meeting. We thought our members would like to get in on it too! Come and speak your minds, listen to Cliff and Anup -- who disagree and have great passion for the subject.
Have a drink -- we're holding this in a bar, as it's intended to be a social event. Come, have a great time! Meet fellow journalists! And join us for an informed debate on one of the day's great topics!
We will meet on the second floor at Johnny's Little Bar, 614 Frankfort Avenue (just around the corner from Johnny's Downtown), on March 24 from 5:30 until 8 p.m. The cash bar will be open, and there will be pizza and veggies.
The cost is $10 per person and you can register here.

SPJ Cleveland Photo Contest is Open!
|
SPJ Cleveland's first-ever Photo Contest is now open, and that means to everyone. You don't need to be an SPJ member to enter. You can find more details on our website, but here are the basics: It's a juried photography contest with a wide range of categories, including a set of student categories. Contest entry fees ($10 for students, $15 for SPJ members and $25 for non-SPJ members) will go toward prize monies for category winners. Submissions will be judged by four area photo editors: Plain Dealer Director of Photography Bill Gugliotta, Canton Repository Chief Photographer Stan Myers, Toledo Blade Chief Photographer Dave Zapotosky and Akron Beacon-Journal Director of Photography Kimberly Barth. Contest entrants will submit a digital copy as well as a large matted print for each entry, so photo editors can view the images remotely as needed to make their decisions. A gallery showing of the prints will take place April 10-May 1 in the Dolan Hall Art Gallery at John Carroll University, 20700 North Park Blvd., University Heights, 44118. Gallery hours will be posted as soon as we get the schedule worked out. SPJ's John Carroll Campus Chapter will have members on hand whenever the gallery is open. The formal closing ceremony will be held Sunday, May 1, from 2-4 p.m. also at Dolan Hall, in the Auditorum, which is near the Art Gallery so you'll be able to visit the Art Gallery and view the prints before or during the ceremony. Winners will be announced and an auction of the prints will take place. Light refreshments will be served, and our chapter plans to circulate a program brochure booklet that will include the bios of winning entrants as well as the bios and headshots of the contest judges. Auction proceeds will benefit the Phillip W. Porter Scholarship Fund, which provides an annual scholarship for a high school student to study journalism during four years of college. The final sales of the prints will therefore be tax-deductible donations to the Philip W. Porter Scholarship by the contest entrants. For information about the Porter Scholarship, please see this link from our chapter website. Contact information, downloadable applications forms and other details are on the website, so please go check it out! |
Plain Dealer editor stresses innovation in talk to SPJ, NABJ at the City Club
| Story and photos by Cheryl D'Mello It's a world that is evolving, where "you have to experiment with innovation," according to the new editor of the Plain Dealer, Debra Adams Simmons. "Newspapers are doing a great amount of experimentation today. We have embraced technology to do a better job of telling the story." Simmons is the first African-American woman to head a top-25 newspaper in the U.S. and the only editor to have held this lofty position at both the Beacon Journal and the Plain Dealer, the two leading papers in the region. She addressed SPJ members plus members of the National Association of Black Journalists, who co-sponsored the event, and other media personnel at the City Club Feb. 23. The Plain Dealer has a quarter of a million readers every day and 350,000 on Sundays, Simmons noted. While readership is moving to the web, the bread and butter is still the paper edition. "We will continue to push for transparency and accountability and stay the course on watchdog journalism," she said, adding that there's a move to publish more good news. "People are asking, doesn't anything good happen in this town? People who come to town need to find the good, the bad, and the ugly. We need to make sure we have a better balance," she stated. "We need to celebrate the successes of this community and record its losses. We need a number of positive, significant, and uplifting stories, and also stories about the economic challenges of the region." The day-to-day life of a reporter is different today from when she was a reporter, Simmons said. "You have to write short stories for the web, short snippets, and also long, well-informed stories. "We need young people who are adaptive, receptive about working with cameras...young people who are comfortable with doing it all." But while many things are changing, she said, "Our core values remain the same. Our competitive advantage is our credibility and our expertise. There will always be a need for news and information, but we have to figure out the most creative way to gather that information and share it with others within the context of the public trust that we represent." In conclusion, she admitted that "it is hard to know what the future holds. We will go boldly into the future as the platforms through which we distribute our news move beneath our feet." The event was co-sponsored by SPJ and the National Association of Black Journalists. Claudia Taller, President of the Cleveland Pro Chapter of SPJ along with Keith T. Reed, NABJ Region IV Director welcomed the audience. About 50 people attended.

Need ideas on adapting to change? Come to the regional! | |
What is "the regional"?
Every spring, SPJers all over the country gather for regional conferences filled with workshops and speakers designed to inspire and develop us as journalists.
This year's conference for our region is April 1-2 in Erlanger, Ky.,
which is so close to Cincinnati that they share an airport (the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport). And it's actually closer to the airport than Cincinnati!
We're in Region 4, which includes Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. This year, the conference is being held jointly with Region 5, which includes Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
It's a day (and two evenings if you stay over) of professional development, networking and fun, and the theme for our region this year is, appropriately,
Adapting to Change.
Come and learn the latest about:
- media law on access and digital media,
- how to get a job out of college,
- how to turn your beat into a book,
- how to use social media for newsgathering and career advancement,
- how to cope with ethics in the next decade,
- how to protect journalists in hotspots,
- Google 101 for journalists,
- how the Lexington media covered the 2006 Comair crash,
- freelancing in a crowded freelance world,
- website roulette (tips for improving yours),
- iPad for journalists,
- why you should study journalism,
- success in specialty reporting.
