| President's Message | |

Cleveland SPJ's officers and directors are journalists, writers, editors and educators. Because we come from such varied backgrounds, our ideas about SPJ events range from Photoshop to writing basics to ethical dilemmas and local issues. Our January event was the brainchild of First Vice President Carrie Buchanan, who worked on Cuyahoga County's draft Code of Ethics with a team of lawyers and concerned citizens. While not strictly a journalism event, it satisfied our need for an ethics event and brought journalists, politicians, and change makers all into the same room, which is a good thing. I wrote about it for this week's Cool Cleveland.
Journalists usually present their stories in words, but, as we all know, there are many ways to tell a story. In this case, we told the story of the conception of Cuyahoga County's Code of Ethics.
Claudia Taller
SPJ President, Cleveland Chapter
Update from Carrie Buchanan:
County Council has a committee, chaired by Councilman David Greenspan, drafting its own code of ethics to be presented to council, probably in March. Lynda Mayer and others from the League of Women Voters have been monitoring their work, and provided me with a draft. It currently does not include any of the whistleblower provisions proposed by the transition workgroup - it only reiterates the much weaker provisions that already exist in Ohio law. We all know how effective they have been!
All journalists should care about this. For more information, keep your eyes on the county website, particularly the committee with the catchy name Rules, Charter Review, Ethics and Council Operations Committee, and perhaps attend one of their community meetings. I hear that, at Thursday's community meeting at the Fairview Park Library, there were definite calls for strong whistleblower provisions.
Carrie Buchanan
First vice-president, Cleveland Chapter
