Writing week 'a gift I give myself'
 | Claudia Taller photo courtesy of lakewoodbuzz. |
I am preparing for a week of writing. The week starts on Saturday morning when I decide what my priorities are. I decide where I want to pitch articles and what articles I need to write, what my long projects will be, and figure out what dates on the calendar can be devoted to my craft. Then I plan my programming and marketing plan for the Word Lovers retreats, this year to be held the first weekends in April and November.
On Sunday, I journal ferociously, then make sure my writing journal, reading journal and everyday-life journal are in order before I print them out and tuck them into notebooks. I write snippets of inspiration in my quote book as I read what I had to say in 2010, then I start the 2011 journals.
Every Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Skyline Writers rents a quiet place and writers gather for a day of writing together. Hours go by when the only sound is the clicking of the keyboards and the scraping of pen on paper. When we take our lunch break, we talk about how the story we're writing feels meandering and we're trying to fix it, how a metaphor doesn't quite work, and how writer's block has resulted in hours of starting over again. Tuesday through Sunday, I write with breaks for walks and visits with friends.
My writing week is a gift I give myself, and I would be lost without it. If you want to jumpstart your year of writing, for a small donation you can join me and Skyline Writers on Monday at Bain Park Cabin in Fairview Park.

Code of ethics program attracts eight county councilpersons, media coverage
|
 | | SPJ Cleveland vice-president Carrie Buchanan with attorney Richard Condit, who was the main speaker at Monday's event. Buchanan was a member of the county's Code of Ethics Workgroup |
By Carrie Buchanan
Achieving an ethical culture at Cuyahoga County will require not just a new code of ethics, but also the political will and budget to enforce it, eight county council members and an audience of about 30 others heard Monday at an event sponsored by SPJ Cleveland. The League of Women Voters also helped with the event, held at the City Club of Cleveland.
Lynda Mayer, chair of the Code of Ethics Workgroup appointed by the county's Transition Advisory Group, said the group drew up its recommended code at the TAG's request after a detailed examination of best practices in other counties across the county. Then the group added some provisions that weren't included in most, such as strong whistleblower protections.
But the effectiveness of the code depends in large measure on whether the County Council and County Executive agree to fund a highly qualified Investigator General (an appointment that County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced Thursday) as well as a staff to support her and the Ethics Board that's proposed to hold hearings on complaints, Mayer said. Her statement was echoed by attorney and whistleblower expert Richard Condit, senior counsel to the Government Accountability Project, a national whistleblower organization based in Washington, D.C. Condit also teaches at UDC's David A. Clarke School of Law.
Condit, who traveled from Washington for Monday's event, praised the code drawn up by Mayer's workgroup. He pointed it's "clearly written prohibitions," which Mayer noted were deliberately worded in language that any 10th-grader would understand.
Condit also praised a requirement that employees receive regular training about the code, and sign a document acknowledging that they have understood it. And Condit noted that the code requires both lobbyists and contractors to be registered, and that its provisions apply to all contractors when they are doing business with the county. He also praised a provision that gives all employees the right to speak freely about their work with members of council - something not usually accorded to government employees unless they are senior administrators, he noted.
Appointing an Ethics Officer or Inspector General and sufficient staff to enforce the code is "critical," Condit added. "If employees get the idea we're just paying lip service," they won't abide by the code, he said.
Two days later, FitzGerald appointed Nailah Byrd, former Manhattan District Attorney, corporate lawyer and current Assistant U.S. Attorney, to be the county's first Inspector General.
Condit stressed the importance of the section that protects so-called "whistleblowers" from retaliation by their supervisors if they speak up about wrongdoing they witness in the workplace. Whistleblowers tend to be viewed in a negative light, he said, but in fact they are essential to enforcing the code. The county can't afford to have a guard in every corner of the workplace, he said, but it can deputize all employees, and all citizens who observe employees at work, to help with enforcement by protecting them in the code.
Large numbers of government employees said, in a recent KPMG survey cited by Condit, that they have observed wrongdoing but, in most cases, haven't come forward. The only way to encourage them is to remove the fear of retaliation that keeps people silent, Condit said. "The reason to include whistleblower protection is because it works."
Additional photos and information about the event are shown on our chapter website and in coverage by Rick Jackson of WCPN on its website.

Internships in Journalism and Communications

SUMMER INTERNSHIP WITH NEW, ONLINE, HYPERLOCAL PATCH.COM
Are you a passionate and entrepreneurial online journalist?
Want to be part of a dynamic and innovative team of journalists, engineers, designers and business pros who are creating a bold new solution for our industry? Would you like to help run a local news Web site, where you'll tap multimedia and social media skills to transform community journalism and connect with communities? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, keep reading...
We're Patch.com, a start-up that's radically reinventing community journalism. We launched in February 2009 and we now operate hundreds of local news sites in towns with populations under 70,000, and we continue to expand! Patch is founded on two core principles: that news matters in towns across the country and that we can create a successful business model to sustain it. Even as many newsrooms have been downsized or shut down, Patch is investing millions to create a nationwide network of news sites using our dynamic platform to produce meaningful daily and enterprise journalism and pioneer new forms of storytelling to serve communities. We have won acclaim in the industry and coverage in The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, Bloomberg, NPR's "Talk of the Nation," "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer," CBS News, and numerous industry blogs and Web sites. We've recently also announced Patch.org, a new initiative that will allow us to collaborate with local foundations and journalism schools to cover under-served communities.
Patch.com is looking for smart, innovative journalists to join our team as editorial interns this summer. We see this as nothing less than the future of online journalism. Our internships provide a great mix of hands-on work experience, professional development opportunities and social networking. Whether you're reporting on a city council meeting, attending a Patch community event or brainstorming with the editorial team about back-to-school coverage, your contributions matter.
This is a 10-week full-time, paid internship and we have openings in many locations across the U.S.
