President's Message
|
 | | Claudia Taller |
Seasons greetings!
Yes, it's almost the holiday season again already, and time to reserve tickets for the Cleveland Communicators' Holiday Party.
It will once again take place at the City Club; this year it's on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Former Cleveland SPJ president Jerry Masek is happily planning for a joyful celebration, and we hope to see you all there. There are more details in the box to the right of this column.
Yes, holidays are about parties, but they're also about taking care of other people and thinking back on the past year. It's easy to think about your parents, your spouse and children, your co-workers and friends, but we see homeless people pulling heat from the city's innards while sitting on sidewalks and children whose parents don't read to them at bedtime. It's also easy to check the list of goals for 2010 and discover you only achieved 50 percent of what you wanted to get done. But striving for excellence, and living each day connected with the world, can be more productive than the "to do" list.
May your Thanksgiving be . . . caring, thoughtful, and thankful.

How should SPJ remain relevant in the digital age?
|
How should the oldest and largest journalism organization in the country remain relevant in today's digital age?SPJ's Digital Media Committee was formed to answer questions like these and to help SPJ remain relevant as the digital age progresses. The report, recently released, suggested that SPJ should be the journalism industry's premier source of information on the latest technology, newsgathering approaches and business models. And SPJ should unite new media start-ups in a national network to foster communication and innovation.Other suggestions include bridging the divide between new and old media; creating a vibrant network for new media start-ups to share ideas online and in person; becoming an advocate for expanding access to the Internet, news and information; and teaching reporters to use powerful emerging technologies. The report's interview subjects include: media analyst Ken Doctor; Joshua Benton, Nieman Journalism Lab; Josh Breitbart, New America Foundation; author Clay Shirky; Pulitzer Prize winners Wendy Ruderman and Barbara Laker, Philadelphia Daily News; former Seattle Times executive editor Mike Fancher; digital media pioneer Howard Owens, Washington Post National Innovations Editor Mark Luckie; Jay Rosen, New York University; Tom Rosenstiel, Pew Research Center; media analyst Alan Mutter; Rick Edmonds, Poynter Institute; and Mark Briggs, author of "Journalism2.0."For more information contact Daniel Axelrod at 978-855-8935 or keystonespj@gmail.com. Canton-born writer Ted Gup finds mysterious, Depression-era donor was his grandfather
| |
Tim Gup, author, former Case Western Reserve University professor and former staff writer for the Washington Post has published his third book, "A Secret Gift: How One Man's Kindness - and a Trove of Letters - Revealed the Hidden History of the Great Depression."
The book chronicles ravages of the Great Depression on his hometown of Canton, Ohio, and takes place the week of Christmas, 1933, a time when unemployment was 50 percent and people were literally starving to death. An anonymous donor that week took out an ad in the local paper, The Canton Repository, offering to help the down and out with a modest financial gift. All that he asked of them was that they share with him in a letter their hardships. He used the name "B. Virdot," a pseudonym. No one, he said, would ever know his true identity or who wrote to him. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of appeals were received and 150 modest checks were sent out across town. No one at the time discovered who he was or who he had helped.
Two years ago, Gup's mother gave him an old suitcase filled with old papers she had never seen before. Inside were hundreds of letters from December 1933 and 150 cancelled checks. That is when Gup discovered that Mr. B. Virdot was his grandfather - the name "B. Virdot" was a combination of his three daughters' names: Barbara, Virginia (Gup's mother) and Dorothy.
Gup tracked down the descendants of those letter-writers to tell the story of what became of them and how B. Virdot's gift touched their lives.
Gup also explored what led his grandfather to make the gift, only to discover that his entire early biography, birth certificate, passports and other documents were fraudulent.
Collectively this research offer a view of the Great Depression, chronicling sea changes in Americans' attitudes about themselves, their relationship with each other, and their expectations of government.
Gup will be in Cleveland to speak on Dec. 17. At noon he will address the Cleveland City Club and later that evening he will speak at the
Cleveland Suburban Temple.
For more informatio about the book, visit its website.
