President's Message
Claudia Taller
Claudia Taller

I missed the Ohio SPJ Awards in Columbus last Saturday because I had some interview commitments for my book on wineries.  I appreciate my fellow officers and board members who step up to the plate at every game we're in. Tom Moore went to the Ohio SPJ awards, and he and Tony Kozlowski were involved in the behind-the-scenes work of organizing them. Cliff Anthony coordinated the Final Cut Pro Workshop at Lorain County Community College (which will be continued soon), Audrey McCrone set the stage for Dan Coughlin's talk this coming Monday evening and Carrie Buchanan puts out a great Writer's Week each week (with Dick Hendrickson's legacy backing her up). All the other board members play in the game when they can, giving the time and energy we need to represent the members of the Society of Professional Journalists, Cleveland Pro Chapter.

Looking forward to Thanksgiving, I'm feeling pretty thankful these days. Pull out your gratitude journals - there's a colleague out there whom you appreciate and who deserves your thanks.

How does SPJ remain relevant
in the digital age?

How should the oldest and largest journalism organization in the country remain relevant in today's digital age?

SPJ's
Digital Media Committee was formed to answer questions like these and to help SPJ remain relevant as the digital age progresses.

The report,
recently released, suggested that SPJ should be the journalism industry's premier source of information on the latest technology, newsgathering approaches and business models. And SPJ should unite new media start-ups in a national network to foster communication and innovation.

Other
suggestions include bridging the divide between new and old media; creating a vibrant network for new media start-ups to share ideas online and in person; becoming an advocate for expanding access to the Internet, news and information; and teaching reporters to use powerful emerging technologies.

The
report's interview subjects include: media analyst Ken Doctor; Joshua Benton, Nieman Journalism Lab; Josh Breitbart, New America Foundation; author Clay Shirky; Pulitzer Prize winners Wendy Ruderman and Barbara Laker, Philadelphia Daily News; former Seattle Times executive editor Mike Fancher; digital media pioneer Howard Owens, Washington Post National Innovations Editor Mark Luckie; Jay Rosen, New York University; Tom Rosenstiel, Pew Research Center; media analyst Alan Mutter; Rick Edmonds, Poynter Institute; and Mark Briggs, author of "Journalism2.0."

For
more information contact Daniel Axelrod at 978-855-8935 or keystonespj@gmail.com. For the entire report visit the website.
