President's Column
Cliff Anthony
Cliff Anthony
Many, many moons ago (Do I sound that old?), I covered a fatal car crash. After three weeks, the "dead man" telephoned me to say "hello." Apparently, he didn't die and was seriously injured. I relied on the local police and a hospital official who gave me his name, age and other details. My biggest mistake was not contacting the victim's relatives and the county coroner because it was a brief item.

He said something like this: "I'm still alive." He was gracious and no lawsuit followed. I ran a correction even though he didn't insist on one.

This anecdote may be a stretch for Cleveland Journalism Nostalgia Night, the theme for our chapter's mixer at 6 p.m. July 20 (Tuesday) at
Johnny's Little Bar 614 Frankfurt Ave. in Cleveland.
At least you get the idea!

Bring your favorite Cleveland media stories and lots of business cards. The event is designed to provide an opportunity for journalists and journalism students to network and build camaraderie. Anyone interested
in the field is welcome.

Last year's mixer attracted about 20-25 people. Among the topics discussed were the state of the media, biased political coverage and freelancing opportunities. I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about, such as the coverage of Lebron James' free-agent media circus.

A $5 charge will cover the cost of crudités and other expenses. There will be a cash bar. For reservations, please contact our Secretary and Treasurer Tom Moore. It's also an opportunity to meet and greet our new board members. Our Nominating Committee has put together a new slate for the 2010-11 term. The list appears elsewhere in this newsletter. I would like to urge all chapter members to vote for them.

See you on July 20.

Sincerely,
Cliff Anthony
canthony@lorainccc.edu

Editor's Note: This is Cliff Anthony's final column as president. We all thank him for writing it, and for his excellent work as our chapter president.

President: Claudia Taller
First Vice-President, Membership and Communications Chair: Carrie Buchanan
Second Vice-President and Program Chair: Audrey McCrone
Secretary-Treasurer: Tom Moore
Immediate Past President: Cliff Anthony

The election will take place at the start of SPJ Cleveland's summer social event: a Cleveland Journalism Nostalgia Night. Bring your relics, stories and photos from Cleveland's journalistic past to share with the group. Dress in appropriate gear, if you like -- you could even carry "antique" recording devices like tape recorders and non-digital cameras.

When and if you know you're coming to the event, please RSVP to Secretary-Treasurer Tom Moore so we'll know much food to buy. There will be a cash bar. A nominal $5 per person charge will be collected at the event to help defray expenses.

New board member named to replace Cuyahoga County Council candidate
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston
SPJ Cleveland board member Ken Myers is running for the District 6 seat on the new Cuyahoga County Council and consequently has stepped down from our chapter's board to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest for SPJ members who might end up covering the election. We take this opportunity to thank him for his services to the chapter and wish him well.

Stepping in to replace Myers is Rodney Bengston, who has worked as a copy editor, reporter and production editor at Sun News. He now works as assistant editor the Sun Post-Herald, West Shore Sun and Sun Sentinel. He also is a founding member of the Cleveland Comedy Kitchen, which does stand-up comedy shows at clubs, corporate events and charity functions. See him on YouTube at the Cleveland Comedy Festival 2008!
