President's Column
| Cliff Anthony |
The topic "Freedom of the press" dominated a friendly discussion a few other SPJ members and I had with a group of cartoonists from the Middle East in May. They were in Cleveland as part of a national tour organized by the U.S. State Department to expose them to the American culture. It's also designed to alleviate the misconceptions about the United States in the Arab world.
Fortunately, the Fourth Estate here enjoys tremendous amount of free speech, which is painfully lacking in other regions. The visitors said they were banned from drawing cartoons of religious and government leaders in their country.
True, there could be occasional self-imposed and management-initiated censorship here. However, there's no government-sponsored, organized censorship as is in the Middle East. I could relate to it. While working as a reporter in Oman in the early 1980s, we were told not to cover certain stories.
A simple 8-inch story I wrote about a burglary was slashed to a paragraph following the local police chief's visit to the editor's office. Unfortunately, the condition in that part of the world remains the same today.
As we celebrate July 4 with fireworks and backyard barbecues, let's take a moment to reflect how lucky we are to have a free press.
Sincerely, Cliff Anthony canthony@lorainccc.edu |
 SAVE THE DATE!
Cleveland Journalism Nostalgia Night
On Tuesday July 20th, we're planning a summer social evening: the theme is Cleveland Journalism Nostalgia. Bring your relics,
stories and photos from Cleveland's journalistic past to share with the
group. Dress in appropriate gear, if you like -- you could even carry "antique" recording devices like tape recorders and non-digital cameras.
Before we start the fun, we'll have an election for
the new board to serve the Cleveland Pro Chapter in the coming year.
Nominations will be sent out ahead of time, so all you'll need to do at
the meeting is vote. If you know of someone who would be ideal for the
board, please contact Past President Betty Clapp as soon as possible! When and if you know you're coming, please RSVP to Secretary-Treasurer Tom Moore so we'll know much food to buy. There will be a cash bar. A nominal $5 per
person charge will be collected at the event to help defray expenses.

DICK HENDRICKSON NOMINATED FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD: SPJ NATIONAL WANTS YOUR FEEDBACK!
Throughout the year, SPJ seeks nominations for its highest national honors. The awards seek to honor individuals and groups that have made a significant impact on journalism in the past year, or in some cases, over a long period. This year, former Cleveland Pro chapter president and longtime member Dr. Richard Hendrickson, who was an editor at the Lorain Journal and later taught at John Carroll University, is nominated for the Distinguished Teaching in Journalism award. In addition, The Carroll News is nominated for the national Ethics in Journalism Award for its restrained coverage of two campus suicides in the fall of 2009, and the excellent work the campus paper's editors did to explain the paper's coverage and its ethical implications to fellow students. SPJ invites members to view these and other national honors candidates and leave comments for the SPJ Executive Committee's consideration. To leave feedback, you must be logged in to the Members' section of the SPJ website and provide your SPJ membership number on the feedback form. Anonymous feedback will not be accepted or reviewed. However, the identities of those offering comments will not be disclosed outside of the SPJ executive board and the headquarters staff.
