You Never Install Software or Upgrades
 

Just the other day this question was raised by an IT guy helping prepare for a Curve Dental workshop:

"Let me know how to install your software and I'll take care of it," he said.

There were several seconds of silence before the IT guy sheepishly said, "Oh, yeah. You guys are Web-based. There's nothing to install... this will be a cake walk."

Think of the time you'll save if you never have to worry about installing upgrades. If you've had to take an evening to install software, you'll never do that again. Spend the time doing something you enjoy, instead.

So how do you access the software? You simply open a browser and enter a username and password. What could be easier?

Classic Dental Humor
While I was waiting to see the dentist, a woman came out of the inner office smiling. Nodding to me she said, "Thank goodness my work is completed. I'm so glad to have found a painless dentist. And one who's so gentle and understanding, too."

When seated in the dental chair I related the incident to the doctor. He laughed and explained, "Oh, that was just my mother."

If your answer is yes, then the question is "Why?"  What's your diagnosis?

  • Are verbal skills ineffective in motivating patients to keep appointments?
  • Do you move patient appointments frequently?
  • Do you expect all payments at the time of service?
  • Are patients unclear about their dental needs?

To turn the situation around, be honest about what is causing the problem. Problems with internal operations, lackluster systems and not taking control of the schedule are usually the culprit.  Once the reason(s) has been determined, develop an action plan to solve it.  Be objective.  Don't blame. Be solution-oriented.

And finally...what are you going to do with all the extra time you used to spend filling openings in the schedule?

First, make sure job responsibilities are clearly defined and there is direction and information from the top and across the staff. Next, address conflict privately and directly with the employee(s). Be prepared to discuss key points of the conflict as well as possible resolutions. Avoid buying into rumors or innuendo. If a team member is complaining about the behavior of an employee, make an effort to observe the behavior yourself, rather than relying exclusively on the opinions of one or two staff members. Most importantly, don't ignore it. Address conflict promptly and constructively.
