Second Edition... Already?
How time flies in Marysvale
Wow,
It seems like just yesterday that I met with the chamber and talked about doing the Marysvale News and here we are on our second edition. I am happy to announce that we have named the news "The Progress". The Progress was a newspaper published in Marysvale for several years in the early 1900's and we felt the name was very fitting. As with most things like this, the first thing you think about is what are we going to say. Well, thanks to all of you and to the great members of the chamber it has now become a matter of what we have space to say. Some of the stories we have received are downright hilarious, some of them are downright un-printable. I hope we can create an archive of great
pictures and great stories out of all of this. I want to thank all of you for your feedback and contributions and please keep the ideas and stories coming.
Don't forget we are also the home of great hospitality and friends that last a lifetime. We hope you enjoy the newsletter and hope you will visit us often. Sincerely,
Darin Bushman Marysvale Chamber President |
The Great Debate, How Marysvale Got it's Name?
If you grew up in Marysvale you have most likely heard a hundred stories about how Marysvale got it's name. If you had a great Aunt, or Grandma named Mary, you might have also heard how it was named after her. Of course everyone believes their story is the "Real Story". In fact in Josia F. Gibbs book "The Marysvale Redbook" the following is claimed to be the "Real Story".
"It was in the Summer of 1866 that George A. Smith, Second Counseller to the President Brigham Young, of the Mormon church and Sylvester Hewitt, with several others, while on an expedition of exploration of Central-Southern Utah passed over the Monroe Divide from Sevier Valley, and camped at the present site of Marysvale. The large, centuries old pine trees, the dense grove of cotton-wood, birch and other high altitude trees of Pine Creek and the fine pasturage on all sides, induced the party to rest during a few days."
"While encamped in the wild, picturesque retreat the members of the party indulged in a "Stag Dance" a frequent pastime of those early days, in which men only participated. President Smith named the locality Merry Vale, which afterward became the more euphoneus if less expressive, Marysvale."
Hesitant to start the great debate, we felt it was worth sharing one more great story about the naming of Marysvale.

It is all a Matter of Perspective.
Lucy Deluke | Katie Moore (Moores Old Pine Inn) relayed this story to me a few days ago, I felt
it was worthy of publication in The Progress. One of our historic cast members that helped shape the face
of mining history in Marysvale was Lucy Deluke. Lucy was involved in many if not all mining deals,
transactions or prospects that went down in Marysvale over the years. It was well known that Lucy had
an affinity for her favorite alcoholic beverages. So as Katy tells me shortly after moving to
Marysvale and getting to know Lucy she found Lucy at the liquor store in a
"compromised (possibly even drunk) condition". Katy felt
it was the politically correct and responsible thing to do, to inform Lucy that
she really shouldn't be driving in her "condition". Lucy promptly replied, "I
am sure not going to walk,....I would certainly fall". It goes to show you everything in
Marysvale is simply a matter of perspective.

Ever Wonder about the Open Air Dance Hall in Marysvale??
The open air dance hall "Cottonwood Grove Dance Pavillion" Opened for business Saturday May 20th, 1939. Cottonwood Grove was opened under the management of Ray Anderson and Walter Kennedy who promised to "secure the best musical talent available and offer every courtesy available to the dancing public". According to the Piute County News (published in Marysvale, Utah) dated May 19th, 1939 they were "expecting and preparing to entertain a record crowd at the opening dance and on every Saturday night throughout the season". The proprietors later added roller skating to the offering. As we all know the dance hall has been host to many dances and community events. Most recently the dance hall has become host to the world famous "Fish Rodeo". If you haven't watched 200 kids try to catch fish with their bare hands in 6" of water, it's well worth the drive on the 24th of July.
