Is an MRI really necessary for low back pain?

low back MRI

Many patients ask us if they should get an MRI to further diagnose their problem. The answer quite frankly is NO, unless you have certain red flags present on your exam.

  • Research* shows that approximately 28% of adults will have positive MRI findings but don't even have pain. We as clinicians never treat the MRI results, rather we focus our attention on clinical findings, symptoms and history to help direct the course of treatment. Many times a short course of physical therapy has been proven to be extremely effective for resolving your low back pain. In addition, the education received will help reduce a recurrence which can often be more disabling.

View this link for a short video that explains why MRI's are not always necessary.

Call us at 732-747-1262 so that we may help reduce your low back pain and prevent the need for an expensive MRI that can often lead to ineffective treatment.
