Experiencing neck pain? Get relief fast.
One of the most common conditions that we treat in our practice is neck pain. Usually it has become chronic before someone decides to seek intervention since they wait too long hoping it will go away on its own. Unfortunately, it only seems to get worse over time, causing restricted mobility, pain and even more complicated symptoms like numbness, tingling, radiating pain or muscle weakness. What might be causing these symptoms? One of the main causes occurs when you sleep awkwardly with your head rotated in one position for several hours. Waking up with a stiff neck is commonly called wry neck syndrome. It is not exactly known what physiologically is happening, but we are confident that the small joints called facets are being stressed, ligaments are stretched and there is excessive compression to the cervical discs. Often when you awaken you will have limited range of motion and localized pain on one side of the neck. Early intervention can make a huge difference in your mobility and significantly reduce your pain. It will also prevent chronic pain and permanent loss of motion. The treatment we recommend is early manual therapy including joint mobilization, postural correction and specific exercises to correct the problem. Additional modalities may be soothing such as moist heat, ice, electrical stimulation, laser and massage. If you begin to develop numbness, tingling or weakness in the shoulder or arm, you probably are experiencing cervical nerve compression or radiculopathy. This also responds to early intervention and usually requires cervical traction to take pressure off the nerve root(s) being compressed. Get your neck pain addressed early to prevent long term complications. Remember, a referral from a physician is not always required.
