Greetings!

Enjoy your holiday, please remember that our troops are still toiling in the heat.  They labor for their love of our country-for you and me!  We are so very fortunate to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Good afternoon from Kabul!

I was just overwhelmed with a very pleasant surprise package from your organization, and in reply to the enclosed card I wanted to let you know the package arrived in perfect condition on 3 September.  It was surprised to see the short transit time because the box had a postmarked date of 27 August!

Everything stuffed in the package is great and fits right in, me and my workgroup here mostly appreciated reading the personal notes and artwork from the children. We already posted some hand-colored U.S. flags on our wall; I don't have my camera handy right now but will send along some photos of me and the group here.

My deployment runs through April 2012, and the address to which the package sent was spot-on. I have repeated it below because the card in the box requested as such:

Of my Navy unit that deployed here, I believe it's only me who heralds from Illinois, so I don't have anyone to sign up as of now.

My most sincere gratitude to all of your volunteers and donors at Operation Support our Troops-Illinois! The outpouring of support means a lot, and I am also glad to have a workgroup comprised of Army, Air Force, and Navy with whom I can share all the goodies!

...and GO ILLINI!

Best Regards,

Lt. Commander Ned

Of course we emailed back to tell him of our name change
and that we support all of our troops-not matter what state they hail from, here's that response:

Here are two pictures we took yesterday, thanks again! The package arrived undamaged, we tend to get decent mail service here.

And I'll share your sign-up information with my unit, since you support folks from all around the country.

Thanks you for the package.  I received it a couple of days ago here in Afghanistan.  We have a couple of very busy and hard days, but receiving this package allowed for all of us here to experience some of the joys of home.  I would like to thank Diane and Jim M, and G.S 54 and 244 and the rest of the people who sent the notes.  It is very hot over here but the weather is starting to cool off.  The toilet paper was especially appreciated as we have not hardstand latrines and only a 60 port-johns for a FOB of 700 people and we frequently run out of TP.  The food is starting to get better every day, the other day we had steak and shrimp.  Some people asked me a question about my favorite Sport team and to answer truthfully the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.  They are a junior hockey team near my base in Alaska.  Last year they won the national tournament, but for the teams in Illinois I root for the Bears and Blackhawks I am not really a fan of baseball or basket ball.  If I have left anybody out of this e-mail who contributed to the package forgive me, as I am having a had time reading some of the letters.  I have been up all night reading reports and writing orders.
