Article Feature - Pet Proof Your House! |
Author: Jeff Marginean
During Butch's recent trip to the vet last week, I over heard a couple talking about their new puppy and some recent damage that was caused by the little guy. They were surprised at how much damage was done by such a cute little fellow and how inventive he was to get into a particular situation. This was funny and it reminded me of an incident that happened to my Dad when Buttons had her first litter of pups. This was so peculiar that I wrote about it in my book My Buddy Butch. It also reminds me of the warning I give people interested in getting their first pet...you really have to be willing to accept a certain amount of unexpected damage...so you had better not have anything you cherish within reach AND you better NOT blame your pet if it is truly your fault.
Excerpt From My Buddy Butch - Confessions of a New Dog Dad~ Now, when Dad had all of the pups, they were quite mischievous as puppies can be at times and they would chew on anything, whether it was nailed down or not. One time, during a nice sunny late summer day, Dad took the pups outside to play. They played for awhile until they were tired out and then they went back into the house. When he made sure they were all fed and sleeping in the crate, with the door left open of course, he went to watch TV and take a nap. When he woke up after his nap he went to check on the pups and they were all gone! Including Buttons! The doors were locked, so they didn't go outside. He looked everywhere for them, under the bed, behind the cage, and behind the dresser. They were nowhere to be found. After about fifteen minutes of looking, he started hearing some faint squealing coming from the headboard of the bed. Kneeling down and taking a closer look under the bed, he saw some lumps moving around inside the boxspring! Those little rascals, namely Buttons, had chewed a hole through the material underneath the boxspring at the foot of the bed. Then they all crawled in and went to the head of the bed, inside the boxspring, where they huddled up and went to sleep. The only way Dad could get them out was to slice the fabric under the bottom of the boxspring. From that point on, and one queen-sized boxspring later, it remained a point of contention because the dogs always wanted to get in there and it was always the first place Dad looked when he could not find them. It seemed, at first, that Butch was the ringleader in this caper but after watching them one day, we realized that it was Cindy, Butch's sister, who was the perpetrator. The rest were merely following her to the head of the boxspring and then Butch would push his way past the rest to be in the front. Terrific! That is one more thing to add to the list to puppy-proof my house before I brought him home. A well thought out "surround," made out of plywood and a few brackets kept him from under the bed...
Butch has not chewed anything of value in years but it can still happen so I still have to stay one step ahead of him! |
Did You Know... |
Prehistoric Dogs
The first "recognizable" dogs were originally domesticated in East Asia. I have read this in numerous places and it seems to be the most widely agreed upon theory by scientists. They have found prehistoric dog burial grounds all over the world but did you know that they have also been found in Indiana! Christopher Koeppel compiled the information and wrote a great article for the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Indianapolis Indiana. Check it out here! |

RESCUE HELP NEEDED!
From time to time we have rescues contact us that we have had on the show to give us updates. Unfortunately, not all of the updates are good. Many rescues and food banks around the country are struggling and we try to do what we can to help and get the word out to those who may be in a position to help. This is why My Buddy Butch has a "Rescue of the Week" segment. Please forward this info if you know someone that can help!
* Basset Rescue of Puget Sound in Washington caught fire and burned to the ground. Of the 11 rescue dogs one; Wilma did not make it out along with 2 birds and a cat. The fire is devastating as it is the home and primary rescue base of JP & Alexa Paul who have been doing basset rescue in the area for 30 years and do a wonderful job.Daphneyland of course is offering as much as assistance as is possible, however geographically this might not be of great assistance to bassets within the system now, and those who will need assistance while recovery begins - recovery may also be hindered by insurance factors, that remains to be seen. If you are in the area, have been involved in a similar situation, or can offer other assistance/advice please see their Web Site to contact. |
