Hi All!
I want to thank everyone for all of the emails in response to the Chronicle and the show. We are getting hundreds of emails each week so it is impossible to read them all quickly, but we're getting to each of them as soon as we can! When I first started writing these Chronicles, I was a bit concerned that I would run out of things to write about. Now, I have trouble keeping the newsletter at a reasonable length and have more topics than I can handle! Hope you are all getting something out of these short snippets of information. If one person gets a laugh or learns from my mistakes then it's all worth it! Please feel free to forward this email using the forward email button at the bottom of this page! Butch and I hope you enjoy the MBB Chronicle and we hope we can help you love your pet a little bit more!
Sincerely,
Jeff and Butch

RESCUE HELP NEEDED!
From time to time we have rescues contact us that we have had on the show to give us updates. Unfortunately, not all of the updates are good. Many rescues and food banks around the country are struggling and we try to do what we can to help and get the word out to those who may be in a position to help. This is why My Buddy Butch has a "Rescue of the Week" segment. Please forward this info if you know someone that can help!

*Basset Rescue of Puget Sound in Washington caught fire and burned to the ground. Of the 11 rescue dogs one; Wilma did not make it out along with 2 birds and a cat. The fire is devastating as it is the home and primary rescue base of JP & Alexa Paul who have been doing basset rescue in the area for 30 years and do a wonderful job.Daphneyland of course is offering as much as assistance as is possible, however geographically this might not be of great assistance to bassets within the system now, and those who will need assistance while recovery begins - recovery may also be hindered by insurance factors, that remains to be seen. If you are in the area, have been involved in a similar situation, or can offer other assistance/advice please see their Web Site to contact.

*Our friends at Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen in Georgia needs some help paying some overdue bills! They distribute over 30,000 lbs of pet food per month. So please think about helping if you can afford a few bucks.

Butch the KINGAuthor: Jeff Marginean
I guess it is a good policy to have good hygiene as a human being and keep yourself healthy. I mean, we all know that this helps keep us healthy and preferably attractive to the opposite sex. It is a good habit to get into. Butch (and all dogs and cats and other furry pet type creatures) practice a certain level of personal hygiene themselves. Even the neglected, strays, and homeless dogs and cats take time to clean themselves up a bit when they have a chance. Some of these unfortunate animals inevitably become infested with various types of insects and parasites and eventually die due to lack of treatment. The more fortunate ones get picked up and receive Veterinary care to help relieve their suffering. I recall a sickening site on one of the rescue shows on TV where one poor dog had so many ticks on its back that it had no hair. Luckily this dog was treated by a couple of  ANGELS. An attending Vet and technician helped remove ALL of these ticks and address ALL of the individual problems this particular animal had. You have to know that the dog was absolutely in agony. Stray, abused, and neglected animals will have these problems because of the situation they are in, but for the most part, our pets, the little friends we have in our homes with us don't have to go through these kind of problems because of the many preventative measures that can be taken to prevent insect infestation, parasites, and other external dangers. Ticks can yield Lyme disease, Mosquitos can carry heartworm disease which is now in ALL 50 states and it is now known that Cats can also contract heartworm disease, fleas can carry tapeworms and cat fleas (i didn't know there was a difference,is there?) can carry the plague and murine typhus. Hmm, interesting. The simple act of Butch just lying in the yard as pictured above could lead to an outbreak of fleas for Him AND ME! Fleas can jump a long way! A simple mosquito bite can give him heartworm disease. Ticks can transfer Lyme disease and mites can cause mange. If you are a new pet owner or are looking for a preventative to help your pet resist some of these problems ask your vet for advice on what to use. There are tablet forms, topical forms and supplement forms of preventatives and there is no need for you and your pet to have to go through it! If you are looking for more information check out our blog for some of the info from Dr. Donna Spector, Dr. Nancy Kay, Dr. Patrick Mahaney and Dr. Kim Bloomer for advice on preventatives and don't forget there are also NATURAL remedies and preventatives that may suite your care plans for your pet. In my habitual looking around I found a good Web Site that discusses Fleas and other issues.

Did You Know...
"Anal Glands (snicker)"
Yeah I know, I'm juvenile...but you're right, anal glands are no laughing matter if your pet has them and they become infected. As I came to find out when I first got Butch, Boston terriers (and other breeds) can have problems if these glands become impacted and possibly infected. Fortunately, Butch has not had this problem as I always have the vet check him out and "express" these anal glands periodically so they do not become a problem for him. Does YOUR breed of dog need this done periodically? Ask your vet about this because often times people don't know about this until problems arise. If you are so inclined to do this messy procedure yourself, make sure you know what you are doing as if it is done improperly you can rupture these glands and cause a bigger problem including bleeding. Ask you vet to show you how! Here is a Web Site that will give you some background but I stress, talk to your vet first BEFORE attempting this on your own.
