The North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (NCWWDB) recently relocated its office from Wisconsin Rapids to the Stevens Point area.  A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Portage County Business Council Ambassadors was held at its new location at 3118 Post Road, on Tuesday, September 25.

Program speakers included Senator Julie Lassa; State Rep. Louis Molepske; City of Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson; Village of Whiting President Paul Stroik; NCWWDB Executive Board Member Joe Kinsella; Portage County Business Council Ambassador Dorothy Pientka; and NCWWDB Executive Director Rene Daniels.

The Workforce Development Board combined its ribbon cutting with an open house which included tours and the opportunity to learn more about the Board and the benefit it brings to the communities it serves.

The event was scheduled to coincide with the month of September being nationally recognized as Workforce Development Month.  See full media release HERE.  Back to top

manufacturing month banner

manufactureLet's Celebrate! October is Manufacturing Month - Wisconsin, along with much of the nation, currently faces a workforce paradox - unemployment rates higher than most current workers can remember, and manufacturers limited by their ability to find skilled workers. This October, the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) Foundation is promoting manufacturing as a viable career in Wisconsin.

As the workforce shortage in manufacturing takes center stage the WMC has taken the lead in providing statewide resources to local communities, chambers, schools and employers.

There are many facility tours including the NCWWDB sponsored Heavy Metal Tour at Nicolet Area Technical College on October 10th (see Bruce Trimble's column below) and presentations planned in communities throughout the month of October dedicated to celebrating the industry that made Wisconsin the powerhouse it is today.

Founded in 1911, the WMC is the state's chamber of commerce

and largest business trade association representing more than 3,500 employers of every size and from every sector of the economy.  Click for more information on Manufacturing Month in October.  Back to top

Bruce TrimblebruceCreating Solutions to Workforce Issues -
Workforce issues are the topic of discussion and at the forefront of conversations I've had with employers in our WDA. The two most often mentioned areas are a lack of applicants with the skill sets employers are looking for, as well as the workforce they need in years to come. NCWWDB just hosted a program to address the immediate needs and has another event scheduled aimed at addressing the long term workforce issue.

NCWWDB, in partnership with the statewide WWDA Business Services group, held a seminar for area employers aimed at addressing the current shortages. The program, presented by Melanie Holmes of Manpower, discussed Teachable Fit, a concept that can be utilized to increase the pool of applicants for a specific position.
NCWWDB and its partners are hosting an event aimed at increasing the future manufacturing workforce in our region. The event, named the Heavy Metal Tour, will be held on October 10, 2012 in Rhinelander.
Nine school districts in northern Wisconsin will be sending over 350 students. By bringing youth, parents and school officials together to view today's manufacturing processes and environment, the sponsor's intent is to increase interest and awareness to the careers available and earning potential of these career paths.

DEI Program Did You Know bannerdei Did you Know - October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month?  Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is "A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?"

NDEAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month."

Job Fair BannerCentral Wisconsin Job Fair - Potential Employers Looking for jobfairVariety of Skills - Hundreds of job seekers turned out for a Job Fair in Wisconsin Rapids on September 26, and they obviously face a lot of competition.  Finding a job in this market can be very hard, especially for those who've been laid off or who've just finished college.

But job seeking experts say there are certain things you can do to stand out. "Employers are telling us that team building, communications skills, and listening are really important.  And they're seeing employees who come in that don't really have those skills," Corey Anfinson, LETC Employment and Training Specialist with the Wisconsin Job Center said.

And on top of that, the application process has changed as well.  "In this market, you can't just walk into a place anymore and have that personal contact. So the Job Fair is a great time for them to get their face out there," Anfinson said.  Read entire article HERE or view the video HERE.  Back to top
