Lisa Johnson is proud to be working as a shift manager at a fast food restaurant and successfully living independently, paying bills, and free from her addiction.  Lisa became a gambling addict while living with her boyfriend.  Her world began to crumble when her boyfriend was sentenced to jail and she was left to deal with their bills.  Lisa just couldn't keep up.  One day she went to a casino and won some money. According to Lisa, winning was such a good feeling.  After her win, she practically lived at the casino.  Her addiction became so intense that she started stealing money, had bouts of depression, and began betraying relationships. Rock bottom was when Lisa ended up in jail. Read Lisa's story HERE.

DOL LogoNEGDOL Awards NCWWDB NEG Funding to Serve Workers From SNE, Joerns, & Wausau Papers - DOL recently announced $2,055,188 in National Emergency Grant (NEG) funding to DWD to serve about 755 workers affected by the closure of four companies in Wisconsin's manufacturing sector:  Joerns Healthcare, Inc.; SNE Enterprises, Inc.; Wausau Paper Printing & Writing, LLC.; and Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc.
All of the workers targeted for services, with the exception of those from SNE were certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). This dual enrollment project will provide the TAA-certified workers with access to "wrap-around" and supportive services that are not available through the TAA program.  See full media release HERE.

BruceNCWWDB Focus - Today's Manufacturing

By: Bruce Trimble, NCWWDB Employer Services Director

Recent news articles are pointing out some of the issues and causes for the current skill gap. There are the obvious reasons, not enough trained or skilled workers to fill the ranks of those retiring, increased orders, and applicants with little or no training for the available positions.

Why do we have this situation?  If you are a parent, perhaps the answer is to simply look in the mirror.  I too am guilty as I encouraged my own child to attain a four-year degree without even considering a career in manufacturing.  And, why did I do that?  Misconceptions about what today's manufacturing is all about (repetitive work, dirty conditions, etc.) and the theory that a four-year college degree guaranteed a higher wage.  Also, I was repeating exactly what my own parents had encouraged me to do.

Today's manufacturing jobs require computer skills beyond basics, technical skills, and all critical thinking.  And, the majority are in showroom-clean environments, requiring multiple skill sets and less and less repetition.  Click HERE  to read entire article.

DEI Program Did You Know bannerdeiDid You Know - July is the 22nd Anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act?  The signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990 was a landmark event in our nation's history.  Or did you know...job accommodations for people with disabilities are usually low cost or no cost?  A recent study revealed that 56 percent of workplace accommodations cost absolutely nothing, and of those accommodations that did have a cost, the typical one-time expenditure by employers was $500.

Passage of the ADA has paved the way for millions of Americans with disabilities to positively contribute to their communities in a variety of ways, including employment.  Two decades on, however, much work remains to be done.  Click HERE to read the entire article.

W-2W2programWisconsin Works Program Changes May Impact Job Centers  - Wisconsin Works (W2) replaced Aid to Families with Dependent  Children (AFDC) in September, 1997. The program provides employment preparation services, case management and cash assistance and is available to low-income parents with minor children who meet eligibility requirements and who are willing to work to their ability.

Private contractors, individual Counties, and County Consortium currently operate W-2 programs throughout Wisconsin.  In the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board region, W-2 services are provided by Forward Service Corporation (Marathon, Lincoln, Langlade, Oneida, Forest and Vilas Counties), and by the PAW Consortium via Wood County (Adams, Portage and Wood Counties).  These organizations are critical partners in the One-Stop Job Center system.  Read the entire article HERE.  Back to top
