Forward Service Corporation's WIA Youth Team Leader, Serena Adler welcomed those in attendance and explained the purpose of the event: WIA Youth Program participants had been offered the following challenge: What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you have the answer? Great! Now show it off and present it to others in the first ever WIA Youth Program Career Fair.

What's a Skills Gap?
By: Bruce Trimble, NCWWDB Employer Services Director
Much is being written about, talked about, and even campaigned about regarding the 'Skills Gap'. What is it, how did it occur, and what is NCWWDB doing to address this issue?
The skills gap is occurring in our WDA 6 in three sectors. Manufacturing is the sector garnering the most publicity. In a nutshell, manufacturers in our area have many openings for skilled positions and yet the majority of those looking for work do not possess the skills needed. Welders and machine tool operators are at the forefront of this demand right now. And, jobs in these skilled areas provide solid, family-supporting wages. So, how did this disparity occur and what's being done about it? Click HERE to read entire article.

Did You Know - That May is Mental Health Awareness Month?
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental health concerns affect 1 in 10 Americans today, but fewer than 25 percent of people with a diagnosable mental disorder seek treatment. Mental Health Awareness Month hopes to help increase the number of people who will talk to their doctor or a mental health professional about their concern. Mental illness is a real and treatable set of conditions that includes major depression, schizophrenia, panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and bipolar disorder, among dozens of others. These disorders are serious enough to significantly impact a person's life functioning, whether at school, work or in their relationships with others. Click HERE to read the entire article. Operating Engineers and Sheet Metal Workers Benefit from SAGE Grant - The Sector Alliance for the Green Economy (SAGE) grant continues its efforts to "green" more trades throughout the State of Wisconsin. Recently, the Operating Engineers and the Sheet Metal Workers have benefitted from the $6 million DOL grant. Including the Sheet Metal Workers and the Operating Engineers, nine trades have been "greened" in the NCWWDB region.
The SAGE Grant provides energy sector planning to businesses, with the goal of readying them for a future "greener" workforce. In addition, the grant is benefitting the apprentices and journey workers statewide by providing the financial assistance to help them further their education in the trades. NCWWDB currently has 54 participants enrolled in the program. Read entire article HERE.
To learn more about SAGE and the benefit to the trades or Energy Sector Planning, contact NCWWDB's Sustainability Coordinator, Diane Weiler at 715-422-4714 or email at dweiler@ncwwdb.org. Back to top
