Jenifer McCandless Family
While working two jobs, one during the day and another at night, Jenifer McCandless, a single mother of three boys, decided it was time for a change. She no longer wanted to just live paycheck to paycheck.  With no extra time to spend with her boys, Jenifer dreamed of a career that would be rewarding and allow her to provide the kind of life she felt her children deserved.  In the fall of 2010, she took the initiative to make a life-changing decision. Poverty Simulation
povertyDid you know...14% of the children in Wisconsin live in poverty?  Over 187,000 children live at, or below poverty in our state.
NCWWDB is sponsoring a Poverty Simulation workshop facilitated by CAP Services, Inc. The workshop will be a role-playing experience offering the opportunity to learn more about the realities of living in conditions of poverty.  Participants enter the workshop with a new identify and family profile and will experience poverty compressed into the real time of the simulation. Participants are asked to share their insights in a debriefing immediately following the simulation.

The Poverty Simulation Workshop opens people's eyes to the human cost of poverty and creates, like no other method, an insight into the state of chronic crisis that consumes so many working poor families. The Poverty Simulation will take place on May 1st at the Biron Municipal Center in Wisconsin Rapids.  Get flyer HERE.  Back to top

bruceWhat Services does a Workforce Development Board Provide to Businesses?

By: Bruce Trimble, NCWWDB Employer Services Director

NCWWDB strives to be the preeminent source for labor data by providing this information in a number of formats. The tool we use most often is software from Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc. (EMSI). This powerful economic forecasting tool allows NCWWDB to provide businesses with a vast array of economic data in many different reports.  This information helps provide businesses and economic developers with all facets of employment and economic trends, such as information on industries, occupations, demographics, employment skills, job compatibility, educational attainment, and economic impacts for any geographical area in our WDA. Steps Forward Graduations
stepsWIA Steps Forward Project holds Graduation Celebrations
The WIA Youth Program, through Forward Service in Wausau and Rhinelander, coordinated the Steps Forward Project for five WIA youth in each area. The project assisted ten participants with exploring new career opportunities, helping them develop daily life skills, and increasing their soft skills with the intent of setting the ground work for success for youth who were entering the adult world.
Youth met ten times in a four-week period, with sessions this year including financial literacy; insurance information; apartment shopping; interview attire; mock interviewing; mental health; public speaking; and nutrition.  Guest speakers from both communities, such as bankers, counselors and nutritionists came and spoke with the youth about their careers and discussed their topics.      youthYouth Job Center Open House/Resource Fair - NCWWDB in collaboration with its WIA Youth-contracted provider, CESA 5, will host a Youth Open House and Resource Fair on April 24, 2012, from 2:30 - 4:30 pm, at the Wisconsin Rapids Job Center. With the current unemployment rate, and older adults working in positions traditionally occupied by youth, it is even more important that youth are aware of the job search resources available to them at their local Job Center.
The open house will be open to all youth in the south Wood County area between the ages of 14-21.  In addition to job search assistance, workshops related to soft skills, social media, and financial education will be offered throughout the event.  Tours of the Job Center will be provided along with demonstrations of the Job Center of Wisconsin and other job search tools and resources.  Download a flyer HERE.  This event is funded by a grant from the South Wood County Teen Leadership, a program of Incourage Community Foundation.   Back to top
