 Rhinelander's Northern Advantage Job Center Celebrates New Location with Open House & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - Northern Advantage Job Center relocated to downtown Rhinelander at 51-A Brown Street. An Open House celebration was held on Thursday, May 12, 2011, from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. A ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce's Ambassador Committee was held at 1:30 pm followed by Job Center tours, video conferencing demonstrations, and refreshments. The new One-Stop Job Center houses various employment and training programs and other resources that assist in meeting workforce needs. Click here to see all the open house event photos. Back to top

 Guaranteed Job Interview Comes with Nicolet's New Welding Certificate - It's not often a college can guarantee a job interview after students complete an academic program. But Nicolet College is guaranteeing just that in a partnership with area employers in need of highly skilled welders. The college's new Welding Fabrication Technical Certificate "will give graduates access to good jobs with good benefits that are in high demand in the Northwoods," said Brigette Parsons, Dean of Trade and Industry at Nicolet College. The13-credit technical certificate will be offered during the college's Summer Session, which runs from June 6th to August 1st. Students meeting WIA income eligibility requirements will have their tuition paid for through a grant from the North Central WI Workforce Development Board. Get more information here. Back to top

  Grant Assistance Announced for NewPage Workers Affected by Layoffs / Senator Lassa
Toured Transition Center & Met with Workers
Shortly after the announcement of the NewPage closure, NCWWDB along with LETC immediately began working to establish a 'NewPage Transition Center' in Plover which officially opened on March 15, 2011. Since the Portage County Job Center closed a few years ago job seekers have had to utilize surrounding Job Centers for services.
The Department of Labor recently announced a $918,702 grant to provide training and job search services to NewPage workers affected by the closure. The infusion of this grant money will help keep the Transition Center open long enough to help the workers to regain employment. Read more HERE. Back to top

 Roberta Gassman appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training in the U.S Department of Labor - Prior to the appointment, Roberta served in the Cabinet of Governor Jim Doyle as the Secretary of DWD from 2003 through 2010. As Wisconsin's longest serving labor secretary, she led over 1600 employees in strengthening Wisconsin's workforce; providing training, employment and dislocated worker services; working with employers to fill jobs; enforcing workers' rights; and administering Unemployment Insurance, Apprenticeship and Worker's Compensation.  North Central Wisconsin Labor Law Clinic - Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Stoney Creek Inn, 1100 Imperial Ave., Rothschild, WI, 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Labor Law Clinics are educational seminars, which are open to the public and feature WI Department of Workforce Development staff explaining many of the laws and rules the agency administers. April 2011 unemployment rate for our nine-county NCWWDB area: 8.4% (unadjusted); the highest being Vilas with 12.7% unemployment
(3rd highest in the state)
and the lowest being Portage with 6.5% (58th highest in the state)
There were 8 *WARN notices given in WDA 6 during the period of
January 1, 2011 thru
May 17, 2011.
*WARN is a required communication for those employers with 50 or more employees. Employers with fewer than 50 employees may have laid people off during this time. |

For the Program Year 2010 that started July 1, 2010,
NCWWDB has served 308 Youth, 435 Adults, and 1102 Dislocated Workers with WIA Title 1 funded programs.
