Governor Doyle recently announced $216,500 will be awarded to the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association to fund its 2010 - Wisconsin Fresh Start program. Fresh Start programs help at-risk youth learn building and self sufficiency skills while providing affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate income residents.  Microsoft Elevates America by Increasing Skills - Wisconsin and Microsoft announce a public-private partnership called Elevate America that will provide no-cost online technology training and certification for eligible residents in 21 E-Learning Courses and Certification Exams. Thousands of training vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all vouchers have been issued. Get more information here. Back to top |
 House Tax Extenders Bill Passes with $1 Billion for Summer Jobs - The House passed HR 4213, the Tax Extenders Bill, by a vote of 215-204 before leaving for a one week recess. The bill was reduced in size by $30 billion, mainly cutting the size of the additional funding for Medicare and a reduction in the duration of COBRA health care for dislocated workers. Included in the bill was $1 billion for summer jobs that can be spent this year and next year. There is also $2.5 billion for the TANF emergency fund that allows Governors to fund summer and transitional jobs. However, because of the recess, the bill will not be completed until at least early June. Read entire article here. Back to top |

Statistics Report
April 2010, Wisconsin unemployment rate - 8.2% (unadjusted); 8.5% (seasonally adjusted)
April 2010 unemployment rate for our nine-county NCWWDB area: 9.0% (unadjusted); the highest being Vilas with 12.2% unemployment
(3rd highest in the state)
and the lowest being Portage with 6.9% (59th highest in the state)
There were 3 *WARN notices given in WDA 6 during the period of January 1, 2010 thru May 31, 2010.

WIA Training Report
As of 5/28/10, NCWWDB has 387 Youth, 293 Adults, and 1,025 Dislocated Workers enrolled in WIA Title 1 funded programs.
Of the above numbers, there have been 224 Youth, 123 Adults and 208 Dislocated Workers served by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.
