Cooperative Mailing Opportunity Inserts Due Next Week!

Business After Hours November 9

Toland Chiropractic Wellness Center located at 15145 Carrollton Blvd. in Carrollton, will host our November 9 Business After Hours event. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Business After Hours offers our area business professionals the opportunity to network and enjoy good conversation and refreshments.  This event is open to non-members. Social Media - What's the Buzz? Lunch & Learn November 15

Interested in learning more about using Social Media to market your business?  Join us November 15, 2011 at our Lunch & Learn seminar! Our session titled "Social Media: What's the Buzz?" is designed to inform business owners, marketing professionals, administrative professionals, and decision makers on the effectiveness of using social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ as free tools to communicate with the public. 

 

The workshop will include a demonstration on how to create a Facebook page for businesses/organizations, how to manage the page with the tools provided by Facebook, and how to drive traffic and interest to the page.  The session will also explore how to create and manage a presence on Twitter and LinkedIn as well as integrating social media as part of a comprehensive branding and marketing strategy.

  

The Lunch & Learn will be held in the Chamber conference room at 100 Main Street in Smithfield. The seminar fee is $20.00 for chamber members or $25.00 for non-members and includes lunch.  Advance reservations are required. Contact the Chamber at 757-357-3502 for information and reservations.

One-on-one Business Development Consultations Available November 16 

A representative from the Small Business Development Center of Hampton Roads will be available on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 to meet with business owners and prospective business owners on a one-on-one basis at the Chamber of Commerce office. The SBDC consultations are one of the services available through the Chamber office to help guide business owners through the many issues of entrepreneurship. There is no charge for this service. The Virginia Small Business Finance Authority (VSBFA) is the Commonwealth of Virginia's economic development and small business financing arm. Insercorp Celebrates 4th Anniversary

Chamber member Insercorp celebrated its 4th Anniversary in October! Insercorp LTD is a full service website design and development company based in Franklin, VA.  Founded in September 2007 as Bradshaw-Kimbrel Technology Group, LLC (BKTG), the new age technology firm established its headquarters originally at the Franklin Business Incubator.  As the company outgrew its space in April 2009 it moved into its current location at 105 W 1st Avenue in downtown Franklin.  In April 2010, the firm incorporated as Insercorp LTD after Tim Bradshaw, Founder & CEO, acquired the other half of BKTG.  By the end of its fourth year in business, Insercorp LTD has grown to a team of three full time employees and four contractors

Fiddler on the Roof Now Playing at SLT

Enjoy Movie Night with PDCC November 18

Paul D. Camp Community College is celebrating the College's 40th Anniversary and the Inauguration of their 7th President, Dr. Paul Conco with Movie Nights!  The next movie will be "12 Angry Men" on Friday, November 18 at 4 p.m. at Hobbs Suffolk Campus and at 7:30 p.m. at the Franklin Workforce Center.  This event is free and open to the public.

Festival of Trees November 19

Have fun and support the YMCA annual Strong Communities scholarship campaign by attending our holiday event! Our 3rd Annual Festival of Trees will be Saturday, Nov. 19, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the Smithfield Center. VFW Community Breakfast Each 2nd & 4th Saturday

Library Updates for the Carrollton Branch of the Blackwater Regional Library  

 

The Carrollton Book Club will meet on November 9 at 2:00pm. The Book Club selection will be A Stolen Life: A Memoir by Jaycee Dugard.

 

Who were the Warraskoyack Indians?  Come to a Native American Heritage Month program on Wednesday, November 9 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and find out from Tracey Heikirk, curator of the Isle of Wight County Museum.

 

Prescription drug costs getting you down?  Come by on November 10 from 1-3 pm to talk to Brenda Lawrence from Western Tidewater MedCare Access to find out about the Medicare Part D "Extra Help" benefit.  You can also find out about an array of other services, such as meal delivery to those who are homebound, as well as transportation and wellness programs. Serving Western Tidewater, this is a free service.

 

Dog Heroes! American Canine Interdiction will bring two dogs trained by their company on Saturday, November 12 from 10amto 11am.Come and find out about these dogs and see them find hidden items inside or outside of the library.  This is a rain or shine program and whole family is invited!

 

Computer Tutoring at Carrollton Library Please call Carrollton Library for an appointment. We offer first and third Wednesday afternoon tutoring sessions that are 1 hour long, one-on-one beginning computer help.

Isle of Wight County Historic Resources News

Children's "Tell Me a Story" Time:  Children ages 3 to 5 and their families are invited to visit the Isle of Wight County Museum for Tell Me a Story, a monthly program designed to introduce youngsters to the symbols of Isle of Wight County through books, games and crafts. The free storytimes are offered from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Fort Huger Walking Tours:  At 10 a.m. on Nov. 19, visitors to Fort Huger are invited for a free walking tour of the site to learn the significance of this gateway to the Confederate capital. Led by local historian Albert Burckard, this tour will last approximately one hour.   Reservations are not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.  Fort Huger is located off Route 10 at 15080 Talcott Terrace, Smithfield, Va. Smithfield Music Concert Information

Sat. Feb 4, 2012 - regional favorites M.S.G., The Acoustic Blues Trio will entertain us with a house concert starting at 7:30.  $20 tickets go on sale to the world beginning Dec. 1st.  (You know the way this works by now - you can buy your $15 tickets starting Nov. 26th)

Sat. Apr. 21, 2012 - from Harrisonburg, VA, The Steel Wheels will perform at SLT starting at 7:30.  As we get closer, we'll announce the ticket sale date but you can count on it being sometime in early March.  The Steel Wheels have been doing some great things since they were here last year and we are excited to have them on our calendar.  For more information visit www.smithfieldmusic.org.
