Upcoming Program
What an honor! Quilt historian, appraiser, judge, and consultant Bettina Havig comes to Des Moines for our May 22 Guild programs and workshops. Bettina is one of the most sought-after teachers and lecturers in the country.
A quilt shop owner for eight years, Bettina has been quilting since 1970 and teaching since 1974. Since then, Bettina has taught for guilds throughout the US as well as in Germany, England, and Scotland.
She has been on the programs of Quilters' Heritage Celebration, Quilt America, Quilters' Unlimited Showcase, and American Quilters Society Annual Show, The National Quilt Festival, Pennsylvania Quilt Extravaganza, Quilts Across America, and Williamsburg Quilt Festival. In addition, she has served as competition judge for many of these same events.
Her work has been featured in such magazines as "Quilting Today", "Quilt", "Quilters' Newsletter", and "Lady's Circle Patchwork", and The British Patchwork and Quilting magazine. She was the designer of the 1999 "American Patchwork and Quilting" Sampler Series. Her quilts have been invited to and exhibited in many national quilt shows.
Bettina has authored five books: Missouri Heritage Quilts, Amish Quiltmaker, Quilts of the Booneslick Trail Quilters' Guild, Amish Kinder Komforts, Classic English Medallion Style Quilts Across The Pond and The Carrie Hall Blocks.
Bettina's afternoon lecture, Three Points of View; Historian, Appraiser, and Judge, offers an exceptional opportunity to experience first-hand how quilts are looked at differently from different positions. Each of these points of view turns a different critical eye to the quilts. Is a quilt's sentimental value overridden by its monetary value? Who can tell if today's prize winner will be important in fifty years? Guild members participate with their own quilts.
The evening lecture, Carrie Hall--The Blocks, The Woman, and The Work, gives insights into the woman who constructed a block from every known and published pattern of her era. Bettina reflects on the original book, The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America, looks at selected blocks and their impact on the development of quiltmaking in the twentieth century. And finally, she explores new work done with these blocks.
Guild meetings are held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church at 8th & Grand, West Des Moines.

NEWCOMERS MEETINGS
Welcome to the Des Moines Area Quilter's Guild.
The Newcomers Group was formed in 1999 with the purpose of allowing new members to learn Guild procedures and meet other members in a smaller setting. It is open to members who have belonged to the Guild for less than one year.
If you qualify, please attend the meeting on Tuesday, May 15th at the Urbandale Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Education Committee and Community Giving will explain what they do and what opportunities you may have to serve.
Sharon Meisenheimer will then give a talk on Tools, Toys and Techniques.
Remember to bring one or two of your quilts for Show & Tell.
We look forward to seeing on Tuesday, May 15.

SMALL GROUPS
Small groups are one of the most effective ways for members of the Guild to connect with one another. Because of this we are focusing on how to better serve our small groups and those who wish to join small groups.
First, the small group reporting form has been revised. We feel that it will give us better information. We ask that all small groups please fill out the new form, called "Small Group Form." Find the form by clicking HERE.
Second, we have created an "Individual Seeking Small Group Form." Now we will have the information necessary to make a better match with a group looking for additional members. Find the form by clicking HERE.
Please fill out the new form(s). You can mail your form to me or drop it off at the small group table at the Guild general meetings. Visit us at that table to ask questions or to pick up a form to fill out.

UPCOMING 2012 WORKSHOPS
The mission of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educating its members, and provide for the inter-change of information. (Adopted -- September 20, 2003).
You may mail in your reservation (see link to registration form) along with your workshop fee to Judy Proksa, 99 Linden Blvd., Pleasant Hill, IA 50327. And of course, we will be taking reservations at our meetings on Tuesdays. WORKSHOP LOCATION
May's Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Des Moines Christian Church at 4501 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. To get there from Interstate 35, exit at Mills Civic Parkway, exit 70. Turn east onto Mills Civic Parkway and drive about .9 of a mile. The West Des Moines Christian Church will be on the north side of Mills Civic Parkway. We meet in Building #3 which is the one closest to Prairie Life Fitness.

Wednesday, May 23 (9 am - 4 pm) Classic English Medallion - 21st Century Style. With an overview of the classic style of English medallion style quilts students will get a glimpse of this style which influenced our quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout the development of quilt making. With the concept in hand we will take a quantum leap into the 21st century. As only three size strips are used for all the basic units; we can sometime use the leftovers from one cutting to make the next borders. We will begin modestly with a wall hanging project but because of the style it may be the start of 'something big'. This is also a good introduction to quick pieced border options.
Thursday, May 24 (9 am - 4 pm) The Fine Art of Hand Quilting. A sampler of quilting designs in a 15 inch pillow top is designed to sharpen your quilting skills, achieve a smaller, even stitch and help develop good quilting techniques. A pattern for the sampler is provided. Students will use various marking techniques. Class discussion includes information on batting, threads and needles.

Wednesday, June 27 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Summer Rose. Learn the basics for building a Fusible Flower quilt in these 6 hour classes. All students in the class work from the same flower pattern. You will learn the steps of developing a flower art quilt, including how color works to make a flower look real, how to use the fusible and lay out of design. Melinda encourages creativity while assisting those who may feel timid about color and design. All skill levels can master these flowers and make them their own. The students will get 80% of their flower done in class. There is a $15 pattern fee for pattern (most pattern pieces traced for student) and all hand outs.
Thursday, June 28 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Thread Play. Renegade Thread Play is covered and demonstrated in class. The class will all do the same flower but can choose the colors for their project as the flowers can be done in any color.

Wednesday, July 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Appliqué Potpourri. Explore advanced techniques for precision needleturn appliqué, and raise your skills to a new level. Learn straight-forward techniques for dealing with complex and challenging shapes, layering fabrics without bulk, and precision placement, as you stitch an elegant appliqué nosegay or wreath. Bring your questions and get hands-on help with your personal "trouble spots". Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.
Thursday, July 26 (9 am - 4 pm) Baltimore Tribute - Advanced Hand Appliqué Techniques. Baltimore Album quilts remain a source of inspiration for hand appliqué. Using an original basket pattern designed in the spirit of the classic quilts of the mid-1800's, explore advanced needleturn techniques common to Baltimore Album quilts. These include woven baskets, complex flowers, layering without bulk, small circles, challenging shapes, and reverse appliqué. If you love hand appliqué, this class just may tempt you to stitch your own heirloom Baltimore Tribute quilt. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.

Wednesday, October 24 (9 am - 4 pm) String Piecing 101 and Beyond. In hard times, quilters used every bit of their fabric. Today, we can use string piecing techniques to create a delightful mixture of color and pattern. Learn the basics and get creative.
Thursday, October 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Paper Piecing by the Strip. Paper piecing is a wonderful way to make perfect points but can be confusing. How much fabric should be allowed? Where should it be placed? In this class, you will learn the trick of using fabric strips to conquer this useful technique.

SPECIAL GROUP MEETINGS
TAG--The Applique Group
The TAG group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine applique is welcome. We are a very informal group, and usually talk and sew and then have show and tell. Some go to The General Store after the meeting for lunch. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliquers from new to very experienced. Evening Applique Society
DATE: The 1st Thursday of the Month
TIME: Beginning at 6:30 p.m.
PLACE: The Quilt Block in Valley Junction
If applique is your passion, either by hand or machine, gather your bags and items, we are regrouping again. You can be a Blue Ribbon winner or just starting out with a project and learning the techniques of the trade....all are welcome.
Feel free to bring snacks or teas to share. Also bring Show & Tell, UFO's or anything you may need help with or want to share.
The group meets at The Quilt Block on the 1st Thursday of the month @ 6:30 until.......Mary Miller (or one of her staff members) is kind enough to stay until we are ready to leave. If you forget anything, the shop with gladly open the register for sales of needed or must have products, so remember to bring your tucked back cash or credit cards.

1800s Quilt Study Group
The 1800's Study Group is having a special meeting in May! We will meet on MONDAY, May 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Marge Pearson's house.
We will be having supper with the May Guild speaker, Bettina Havig followed by a trunk show of antique quilts by Bettina.
