Upcoming Program
On Tuesday, April 24, we welcome an award-winning designer and instructor from Beaufort, Missouri. Toby Lischko offers great new ways to enhance your piecing skills.
An owner of Gateway Quilts & Stuff, Inc., Toby is known for her prolific quilt designs, her "Unfoundation Piecing" technique and her focus on inspiring others through her teaching.
Toby considers herself a traditional quilter. "I like to take traditional blocks and create something new and unique," she says. "When I teach classes, I want to impart my love of quilting and show others it only looks hard. I break everything down to basic steps that even a beginner can do. I want people to leave my class saying Wow, I did not know I could do that!"
She is a regular designer for P&B Textiles and has done commissioned work for Timeless Treasures, RJR Fabrics, and Marcus Bros. Fabrics. Her original work has appeared in many national magazines including McCalls Quilting, Quilters Newsletter, McCalls Quick Quilts, Quilter's World, The Quilter, American Patchwork & Quilting, and Miniature Quilts. She is also a virtual quilt designer for Hoffman Fabrics.
Toby's afternoon lecture/trunk show is "How the Curved Block Influenced My Quilting". This presentation is a short history of her prize-winning quilts and how blocks such as the New York Beauty and other curved piece blocks have influenced her work. It includes an overview of the last 200+ years of curved blocks and how they got their names.
The evening lecture/trunk show "Making Minis, Smaller not Harder" includes what goes into making miniature quilts, including fabric selection, quilting supplies, and techniques. A trunk show follows of her published and winning miniature quilts.
Guild meetings are held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church at 8th & Grand, in West Des Moines.

NEWCOMERS MEETINGS
Welcome to the Des Moines Area Quilter's Guild.
The Newcomers Group was formed in 1999 with the purpose of allowing new members to learn Guild procedures and meet other members in a smaller setting. It is open to members who have belonged to the Guild for less than one year.
If you qualify, please attend the meeting on Tuesday, April 17th at the Urbandale Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Directors-at-Large will explain the duties of their office. Ginny Barchman will then give us an introduction to wool applique.
Remember to bring one or two of your quilts for Show & Tell. If you have done any wool applique please be sure to bring it.
We are looking forward to seeing on Tuesday, April 17th. FYI, the library does not allow food or drink in the meeting room.
Peggy Kirk, Vice President
SMALL GROUPS
Small groups are one of the most effective ways for members of the Guild to connect with one another. Because of this we are focusing on how to better serve our small groups and those who wish to join small groups.
First, the small group reporting form has been revised. We feel that it will give us better information. We ask that all small groups please fill out the new form, called "Small Group Form." Find the form by clicking HERE.
Second, we have created an "Individual Seeking Small Group Form." Now we will have the information necessary to make a better match with a group looking for additional members. Find the form by clicking HERE.
Please fill out the new form(s). You can mail your form to me or drop it off at the small group table at the Guild general meetings. Visit us at that table to ask questions or to pick up a form to fill out, too.
Thank you for helping us to serve you better. Peggy Kirk

Wednesday, May 23 (9 am - 4 pm) Classic English Medallion - 21st Century Style. With an overview of the classic style of English medallion style quilts students will get a glimpse of this style which influenced our quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout the development of quilt making. With the concept in hand we will take a quantum leap into the 21st century. As only three size strips are used for all the basic units; we can sometime use the leftovers from one cutting to make the next borders. We will begin modestly with a wall hanging project but because of the style it may be the start of 'something big'. This is also a good introduction to quick pieced border options.
Thursday, May 24 (9 am - 4 pm) The Fine Art of Hand Quilting. A sampler of quilting designs in a 15 inch pillow top is designed to sharpen your quilting skills, achieve a smaller, even stitch and help develop good quilting techniques. A pattern for the sampler is provided. Students will use various marking techniques. Class discussion includes information on batting, threads and needles.
