Upcoming Program
On Tuesday, February 28, two of our Guild's most long-standing art quilting groups plan to share their quilts and their journeys.
At 1 p.m. the Designing Ladies showcase different types of art quilting techniques from funky folk art to fabric painting. Members are: JoAnn Belling, Fern Stewart, Val Russell, Becky Stevens, Donna Horn, Barb Eckoff, Julie McCullough, Dixie Loynnachan, Karen Spencer, Margaret Sindelar, Sandy Holmes, and Betty Mathers.
The evening lecture, at 7 p.m., highlights the no-rules work of the Central Iowa Textile Artists - how they started and how far they've come. Members: Becky Kemble, Ilene Bartos, Barb Jones, Angela Lawrence, Linda Knierim, Jan Hall, Jean O'Donnell, Janet Bergeron, and Wendy Reed.

Greetings!
I hope everybody is enjoying our [warm, then snowy, then warm, then cold] winter. It is a perfect time to snuggle down into creating or finishing your great quilt projects. We have such a wonderful creative hobby with so many dimensions that most can find a style that fits their comfort zone. A great part about belonging to this quilting guild is members are generous with their time and ideas to give encouragement to one another.
The board gathered at its January retreat to get acquainted, review the tasks involved with our jobs and to plan the budget for 2012.
We have two events to share with you in regards to Officers.
Nancy Sharr will be inactive for 2 months because a family member is very ill. Emma Thomas-McGinnis will cover during Nancy's absence. Also Emma is in the process of updating our web page.
Lorraine "Rainy" Gibbens unfortunately has had to submit her resignation from the position of Corresponding Secretary. Her husband is extremely ill and will probably take two years to recover. We understand but are saddened to accept her resignation. Our Newsletter Editor, Linda Enghausen, will cover the web page questions and correspondence.
Please remember Nancy and Lorraine "Rainy" in your thoughts, best wishes and prayers.
Meetings: Please share your talents by showing us your quilts at "Show and Tell" during our monthly meeting and by volunteering when you can squeeze in the time.
Programs are the heart of our meetings and we started off January with a bang with Gail Garber and her "free-form" shapes. The workshops are the frosting on the cake and her classes were full with people raving about Gail's quilting techniques. This month, February, we have a real treat. We are Celebrating the Art of Quilting with two of our own small Art groups. I encourage you to come to both our 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. meetings.
Workshops: Please look over the programs, ask if you are not familiar with a lecturer and select at least one workshop to attend. We are so so fortunate to have this quality of Lectures and Workshops. My skills have tripled by attending workshops over the years. Come, have fun, learn and share. Note: there will not be any workshops in February.
Retreat: Come to our Spring Retreat, Thursday, April 19 through Sunday, April 22. Come when you can and enjoy the fellowship and sew. Look forward to seeing you. We have less rooms so please register early.
Community Giving: Thank you for your generosity in January.
2012 President's Challenge: The theme is "A Small Blessing" the size for DMAQG quilts will be the same 40" x 30" and brought in December to our Annual Meeting and Christmas Tea. I feel very blessed to be President this year and hope you will find and share many blessings in your quilting world this year!

Wednesday, March 28 (9 am - 4 pm) - Hawaiian Quiltmaking. Awesome in their symmetry and beauty, Hawaiian quilts are surprisingly easy to make. Nancy has been making Hawaiian quilts since 1978; she knows them intimately. In the one-day class, you will have hands-on experience with cutting out a Hawaiian block, basting, and needleturn appliqué. All skills levels are welcome. Thursday, March 29 (9 am - 4 pm) - Miniature Appliqué. Don't ever be intimidated by an appliqué pattern again. In this class you will learn how to deal with tiny shapes so any appliqué project is a SNAP. Leave all your preconceived ideas at home, and come ready to experience an awakening of your inner talents! Some appliqué experience is preferred in this class, but if you take the Hawaiian Quiltmaking class on Wednesday, you have the skills to take this one, too. Wednesday, April 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Millefiori - New York Beauty. A class based on Toby's Millefiori quilt featured in McCall's Quilting magazine May 2010 - how to create this unique New York Beauty quilt. It is an extension of Toby's Unfoundation piecing 101 class, which includes curved piecing, foundation piecing with freezer paper, and adds how to find designs with mirrors, fussy-cutting with templates, using stripes in your block, and construction of the block. Intermediate to advanced. Kit fee of $25 includes templates and pattern is required--payuable at class.
Thursday, April 26 (9 am - 4 pm) Stars Over St. Louis - Eight Point Star. The St. Louis Star has no "y" seams and has so many possibilities for designs. You can use mirrors to create a kaleidoscope effect. Participants may make her small "Miniature Quilt Magazine" prize winning wall quilt (18") or a 36" version. In the morning there is a short Powerpoint presentation on using mirrors and then you get to play with mirrors and sew the center medallion. In the afternoon you will learn to make perfect "y" seams without marking. Intermediate quilter. Kit fee of $35 includes the pattern, "Magic Mirrors", and acrylic templates (specify large or small)--payable at class.

Wednesday, May 23 (9 am - 4 pm) Classic English Medallion - 21st Century Style. With an overview of the classic style of English medallion style quilts students will get a glimpse of this style which influenced our quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout the development of quilt making. With the concept in hand we will take a quantum leap into the 21st century. As only three size strips are used for all the basic units; we can sometime use the leftovers from one cutting to make the next borders. We will begin modestly with a wall hanging project but because of the style it may be the start of 'something big'. This is also a good introduction to quick pieced border options.
Thursday, May 24 (9am - 4 pm) The Fine Art of Hand Quilting. A sampler of quilting designs in a 15 inch pillow top is designed to sharpen your quilting skills, achieve a smaller, even stitch and help develop good quilting techniques. A pattern for the sampler is provided. Students will use various marking techniques. Class discussion includes information on batting, threads and needles.

Wednesday, June 27 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Summer Rose Learn the basics for building a Fusible Flower quilt in these 6 hour classes. All students in the class work from the same flower pattern. You will learn the steps of developing a flower art quilt, including how color works to make a flower look real, how to use the fusible and lay out of design. Melinda encourages creativity while assisting those who may feel timid about color and design. All skill levels can master these flowers and make them their own. The students will get 80% of their flower done in class.
Thursday, June 28 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Thread Play. Renegade Thread Play is covered and demonstrated in class. The class will all do the same flower but can choose the colors for their project as the flowers can be done in any color. There is a $15 pattern fee for pattern (most pattern pieces traced for student) and all hand outs--payable at class.

Wednesday, July 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Appliqué Potpourri. Explore advanced techniques for precision needleturn appliqué, and raise your skills to a new level. Learn straight-forward techniques for dealing with complex and challenging shapes, layering fabrics without bulk, and precision placement, as you stitch an elegant appliqué nosegay or wreath. Bring your questions and get hands-on help with your personal "trouble spots". Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.
Thursday, July 26 (9 am - 4 pm) Baltimore Tribute - Advanced Hand Appliqué Techniques. Baltimore Album quilts remain a source of inspiration for hand appliqué. Using an original basket pattern designed in the spirit of the classic quilts of the mid-1800's, explore advanced needleturn techniques common to Baltimore Album quilts. These include woven baskets, complex flowers, layering without bulk, small circles, challenging shapes, and reverse appliqué. If you love hand appliqué, this class just may tempt you to stitch your own heirloom Baltimore Tribute quilt. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.

Wednesday, October 24 (9 am - 4 pm) String Piecing 101 and Beyond. In hard times, quilters used every bit of their fabric. Today, we can use string piecing techniques to create a delightful mixture of color and pattern. Learn the basics and get creative.
Thursday, October 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Paper Piecing by the Strip. Paper piecing is a wonderful way to make perfect points but can be confusing. How much fabric should be allowed? Where should it be placed? In this class, you will learn the trick of using fabric strips to conquer this useful technique.

Community Giving
Please join us on Monday, March 26 at the West Des Moines Public Library, 4000 Mills Civic Parkway, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for our charity sewing day. Bring your sewing machine, electrical cords, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter and other basic sewing supplies. We will have a sign up sheet at the February meeting.
For new members and a helpful reminder for those who have been active, here are the projects and where they will be donated this year. ChildServe--crib & lap quilts, Bernie Lorenze Women's Recovery--twin quilts, Meals On Wheels in surrounding counties--placemats, Ronald McDonald House--pop pull tabs, St. Joseph's Shelter--toiletries, Valley View Village--clothing protectors, and ConKerr Cancer and Youth Shelters--pillowcases.
We also encourage donations of 100% cotton fabrics. Large size pieces suitable for backings are always needed.

2012 Challenge for Quilt Show
Our theme for the show revolves around the symbolism of pineapples. Pineapples represented hospitability in early America. The placemats that we make and are distributed by Community Giving will be our challenge this year. We have broadened our areas to include all of our surrounding counties "Meals on Wheels" programs. These new programs are very excited to be included in our "Hospitality Placemats Challenge"!
Please continue to turn in your placemats at meetings throughout the year. Challenge your small group to make placemats. Teach a child or friend to quilt on this simple project. Consider making some with holiday themes. We will have a special display at the quilt show, showcasing our "Challenge". The placemats will then be distributed to each coordinator in the surrounding counties.

Spring Retreat--April 19-22
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN AT THE FEBRUARY 28 GUILD MEETING AND NOT BEFORE
Sign up early to get the spot you want--registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The fee is $140 and $165 for non-members---this includes brunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. We will have a potluck on Thursday night so bring a dish to share. On Friday evening we will have pizza and salads. Our dinner on Saturday evening will be provided by the Camp. Lodging will be in Wesley, Otterbein, and Buxton.
In past retreats the Guild has lost money trying to accommodate everyone because we are charged for the room whether you come for 1 day or 4 days. We will be charging only the one fee of $140 for members and $165 for non-members. The spring retreat will only use the west sewing room and has a limit of 40 people due to declining attendance at this retreat. The fall retreat is more heavily attended and we will use both sewing rooms.
The Retreat starts at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, and ends at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22. You may come and go as you please.

2011 President Challenge Winners
There were 12 entries in the 2011 President's Challenge, but only 8 will be entered in the AQS President's Challenge. We will be showcasing 2 entries each month in the newsletter with a picture of the quilt and the designer along with the inspiration for the Uffda quilt in the designer's own words.

Uffda - Sensory Overload - An Homage to Anita, Diane, Nancy and Sally
One of the first descriptions we got for "uffda" was "sensory overload". The pictures of the ladies perfectly represented the senses--smell, taste, touch, sight, hearing. They were the beginning of the quilt.
These ladies looked like they belonged on a crazy quilt, and that created the next portion of the quilt. Crazy quilts also have lots of texture with embellishments, which adds to the sensory overload.
As the quilt developed, I used techniques I learned in classes with Anita Shackelford, Diane Gaudynski, Nancy Eha, and Sally Collins.

There are a lot of things I could have used the expression Uffda for, so trying to decide what to create was a tough one. The last dog I had was a world champion digger and escape artist. I love dogs and I love flowers but the two certainly don't mix. Uffda!

Quilts of Valor Presentation
Be sure to tune in Saturday afternoon, March 3, at 3 p.m. to see the debut broadcast of "Quilts of Valor," a brand new documentary created by Iowa Public Television.
In addition to interviews, stories, and field pieces about the origins and ongoing work of Quilts of Valor Foundation, the program includes unique and entertaining sewing sessions. Celebrity quilters Alex Anderson, Eleanor Burns, and Mark Lipinski each take a non-quilter "under their wings" to make a quilt of valor. Alex Anderson's "rookie" is Iowa's own Dan Gable, Olympic Gold Medalist and wrestling legend.
The program will be re-broadcast at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6. If the show pledges well in Iowa, it will likely be picked up by public television affiliates around the nation, so March 3 will be a great day to renew your IPTV membership or become a first-time Friend of IPTV!

International Quilt Festival of Ireland 2012
My name is Caitlin Hacker and I am the Director of Quilt Exhibits for the International Quilt Festival of Ireland. I am contacting you because we thought it would be a grand idea to invite members of your quilt guild to show quilts at our festival, and represent your entire guild with a quilt for one or two of our exhibits. I wanted to share with you two unique exhibits that we feel are going to gather a lot of attention at the festival. The first is called, "My Quilted Garden" and the second is "Yin & Yang."
"My Quilted Garden" will transform a large room in one of NUIG's (the university campus we have turned into a Quilter's Village) oldest building into what we envision will be an extraordinary walk-in garden, with beautifully colored 3-D flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, grass, and even a stream, while birds are chirping, bees are buzzing and incredibly colorful flower and garden quilts line the walls to enclose the garden setting. It is going to be lovely. We are offering a $1000 cash prize to the best entry in the exhibit, whether it be flowers or a quilt that hangs on the wall.
"Yin & Yang," however, is something on the opposite side of the spectrum that is more challenging, but equally as fun. Each quilter who participates will have to create two quilts, one that represents their artistic side as an art quilter and one that allows them to create something traditional. It is the same theme for both quilts, one made using more of a right brain application and the other using the left brain. The winner of this exhibit entry will receive a cash prize of $2,500. Having one quilter from your guild to represent the entire guild would be truly exciting.
The deadline to complete these entries has been extended to May 1st, so there is plenty of time to create these flowers, plants, bushes and even ivy to be part of our international garden. There is no size limit and everything that one might find in a garden is welcome...even quilted rocks!
We are featuring different quilt guilds and countries around the world with this exhibit, and I wanted to feature your guild in the garden with your members creating a patch of fabric flowers from your province, state, if it is known for a particular flower or plant. We have already received beautiful and imaginative flowers from quilters all over the world, tulips from our Holland quilters, edilwiess from our Switzerland quilters and many more.
Just to let you know, we have all of this information available on our festival website: www.IQFOI.com and if nothing else, the Cead Mile Failte quilt block entry could also be a nice contribution to the exhibits, as quilters around the world trace their hand and make a quilt block they applique and design that will be sewn with other blocks as the official "welcome exhibit" at the festival each year it is presented.
Finally, as a member of a quilt guild, we would like to extend to you the invitation to join us next year in Ireland as we present our second annual INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL OF IRELAND. Maybe you would like to help us gather a small group of twenty people from your guild to join us? If that is something that would interest you, we will provide for you a complimentary trip for helping us put this small group together, or if you don't want the free trip, we will donate $100 back to your guild for every person who joins your tour. Please let me know if this is something you might want more information about. I will be happy to send it to you.
Thanks for considering all of this, and I do hope members of your guild would like to participate. To be honest, I think it could be really fun for members of your guild to sit around one afternoon or evening and make fabric flowers and represent your guild with a nice little bundle or patch in the garden. That sounds like a lot of fun to me!
