Greetings!
UFFDA--What an honor it has been to serve on the Guild Board! You have a great board and we have a great Guild! Don't forget the December Tea on Saturday, December 3rd. It is a wonderful morning to spend with friends and talk about what we love, QUILTING. We have a great board ready to go for next year--as quilters, we never sit, do we? We are always ready for change (some of the best quilts we make have many changes in them) and looking at the future whether it is new lectures, new patterns, new fabric...., it is what makes us tick but we can also sit back and enjoy the old---Old friends, old quilts, old patterns, old books. I leave you in great hands with Barb Smalley taking the helm and I look forward to again sitting amongst you wondering why it is so hard to get a microphone to work and not having to worry about it.
Well we have dodged the snow thus far but it still feels great to get cozy in the sewing room or comfy under a quilt while quilting or binding. I'm looking forward to seeing the Challenge Quilts. They are a show in themselves!!!!
THANKS for all of your SUPPORT and I have so appreciated all the efforts of so many people that make our Guild what it is! I'll be seeing you at the next meeting if not before!! Your inspiration is contagious and I now have so many new friends that lighten every day! SPECIAL THANKS TO THE OTHER BOARD MEMBERS FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS--YOU ARE VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE AND ALTHOUGH I WILL NOT MISS RUSHING TO GET TO THIS MEETING OR THAT, I WILL MISS WORKING ALONG SIDE YOU AND AM VERY BLESSED TO CALL YOU FRIENDS!

BYLAW CHANGES
The Bylaws were revised by the Board. The major changes made are in Article IV, paragraph 2 (Community Giving Committee was transferred to the President) and paragraph 3 (Nominating Committee was transferred to the Vice President). Also on page 6, the Newsletter guidelines were changed. Minor wording and grammatical changes were made throughout. Please review the revised Bylaws by clicking HERE. These changes will be discussed at the December tea.
RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP
It is time to renew your Guild membership. The membership form can be found HERE. We will also have forms available at the December tea. Membership needs to be renewed by March 1 in order for you to be included in the Guild's membership directory.

Upcoming 2012 Workshops
The mission of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educating its members, and provide for the inter-change of information. (Adopted -- September 20, 2003).
NOTE; REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY WORKSHOPS UNTIL DECEMBER 3. Click HERE for the 2012 workshop form to fill out and turn in at the December Tea.
WORKSHOP LOCATION
January's Workshop will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church at 4501 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. To get there from Interstate 35, exit at Mills Civic Parkway, exit 70. Turn east onto Mills Civic Parkway and drive about .9 of a mile. The West Des Moines Christian Church will be on the north side of Mills Civic Parkway. We will meet in Building #3 which is the one closest to Prairie Life Fitness.

Wednesday, January 25 (9 am - 4 pm) - The Goose is Loose. Designing with Free-Form Shapes.This is Gail's most popular class, by far! It introduces the student to original design in free-form shapes. Learn the drafting and piecing techniques for flying geese in the round, loose curves, or swirls. It is sew easy to do; students are often surprised at the simplicity of the technique, taught with no scary math words! These designs can be simply designed and easily stitched using freezer paper piecing techniques. $7 workbook fee.
Thursday, January 26 (9 am - 4 pm) - Designing Circular Borders. Students will stitch samples and learn freezer paper foundation techniques. It's not magic! It's easy, using simple drafting techniques, with Gail's sure fire, no "scary math words" teaching style. Learn to draft circular flying geese, spirals, big n' little, and more. Students will learn drafting techniques for a variety of circular borders. $5.00 workbook fee.

Wednesday, March 28 (9 am - 4 pm) - Hawaiian Quiltmaking. Awesome in their symmetry and beauty, Hawaiian quilts are surprisingly easy to make. Nancy has been making Hawaiian quilts since 1978; she knows them intimately. In the one-day class, you will have hands-on experience with cutting out a Hawaiian block, basting, and needleturn appliqué. All skills levels are welcome.
Thursday, March 29 (9 am - 4 pm) - Miniature Appliqué. Don't ever be intimidated by an appliqué pattern again. In this class you will learn how to deal with tiny shapes so any appliqué project is a SNAP. Leave all your preconceived ideas at home, and come ready to experience an awakening of your inner talents! Some appliqué experience is preferred in this class, but if you take the Hawaiian Quiltmaking class on Wednesday, you have the skills to take this one, too.

Wednesday, April 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Millefiori - New York Beauty. A class based on Toby's Millefiori quilt featured in McCall's Quilting magazine May 2010 - how to create this unique New York Beauty quilt. It is an extension of Toby's Unfoundation piecing 101 class, which includes curved piecing, foundation piecing with freezer paper, and adds how to find designs with mirrors, fussy-cutting with templates, using stripes in your block, and construction of the block. Intermediate to advanced. Kit fee of $25 includes templates and pattern is required.
Thursday, April 26 (9 am - 4 pm) Stars Over St. Louis - Eight Point Star. The St. Louis Star has no "y" seams and has so many possibilities for designs. You can use mirrors to create a kaleidoscope effect. Participants may make her small "Miniature Quilt Magazine" prize winning wall quilt (18") or a 36" version. In the morning there is a short Powerpoint presentation on using mirrors and then you get to play with mirrors and sew the center medallion. In the afternoon you will learn to make perfect "y" seams without marking. Intermediate quilter. Kit fee of $35 includes the pattern, "Magic Mirrors", and acrylic templates (specify large or small).

Wednesday, May 23 (9 am - 4 pm) Classic English Medallion - 21st Century Style. With an overview of the classic style of English medallion style quilts students will get a glimpse of this style which influenced our quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout the development of quilt making. With the concept in hand we will take a quantum leap into the 21st century. As only three size strips are used for all the basic units; we can sometime use the leftovers from one cutting to make the next borders. We will begin modestly with a wall hanging project but because of the style it may be the start of 'something big'. This is also a good introduction to quick pieced border options.
Thursday, May 24 (9am - 4 pm) The Fine Art of Hand Quilting. A sampler of quilting designs in a 15 inch pillow top is designed to sharpen your quilting skills, achieve a smaller, even stitch and help develop good quilting techniques. A pattern for the sampler is provided. Students will use various marking techniques. Class discussion includes information on batting, threads and needles.

Wednesday, June 27 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Summer Rose Learn the basics for building a Fusible Flower quilt in these 6 hour classes. All students in the class work from the same flower pattern. You will learn the steps of developing a flower art quilt, including how color works to make a flower look real, how to use the fusible and lay out of design. Melinda encourages creativity while assisting those who may feel timid about color and design. All skill levels can master these flowers and make them their own. The students will get 80% of their flower done in class.
Thursday, June 28 (9 am - 4 pm) Fabulous Fusible Flowers - Thread Play. Renegade Thread Play is covered and demonstrated in class. The class will all do the same flower but can choose the colors for their project as the flowers can be done in any color. There is a $15 pattern fee for pattern (most pattern pieces traced for student) and all hand outs.

Wednesday, July 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Appliqué Potpourri. Explore advanced techniques for precision needleturn appliqué, and raise your skills to a new level. Learn straight-forward techniques for dealing with complex and challenging shapes, layering fabrics without bulk, and precision placement, as you stitch an elegant appliqué nosegay or wreath. Bring your questions and get hands-on help with your personal "trouble spots". Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.
Thursday, July 26 (9 am - 4 pm) Baltimore Tribute - Advanced Hand Appliqué Techniques. Baltimore Album quilts remain a source of inspiration for hand appliqué. Using an original basket pattern designed in the spirit of the classic quilts of the mid-1800's, explore advanced needleturn techniques common to Baltimore Album quilts. These include woven baskets, complex flowers, layering without bulk, small circles, challenging shapes, and reverse appliqué. If you love hand appliqué, this class just may tempt you to stitch your own heirloom Baltimore Tribute quilt. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué. Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Emphasis: Needleturn technique.

Wednesday, October 24 (9 am - 4 pm) String Piecing 101 and Beyond. In hard times, quilters used every bit of their fabric. Today, we can use string piecing techniques to create a delightful mixture of color and pattern. Learn the basics and get creative.
Thursday, October 25 (9 am - 4 pm) Paper Piecing by the Strip. Paper piecing is a wonderful way to make perfect points but can be confusing. How much fabric should be allowed? Where should it be placed? In this class, you will learn the trick of using fabric strips to conquer this useful technique.

Community Service
It is hard to believe this will be my last opportunity to report on Community Service donations from our Guild. The past two years have flown by so quickly. It has been a pleasure to work with Deanna Wilson this year and I know she will do a fantastic job as Community Service chair in 2012.
The highlight of every meeting is collecting your creative donations. Our members are so generous. I hope you will be able to attend the December 3rd tea to hear our total number of items collected and to whom they were donated. Like last year the list is long!! We also will announce the top donors and one lucky member will receive a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.
In October we presented the quilt our Guild made for The Festival of Trees and Lights which is held during the week of Thanksgiving. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Chari Ghrist at 241-3215. All volunteers are eligible for free admission.

It is time to thank your retiring board members for serving on the board. It is because of their dedicated service that we have such a great Guild. Please show your appreciation for their hard work by purchasing fat quarters or making a hatchet block and bring them to the December Tea or to the January meeting.

In Memoriam
Member Anna Fleming passed away on November 8, 2011, at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Services were held on Saturday, November 12, 2011
Jan Petersen's husband, Richard Petersen, passed away on October 4, 2011. Jan is a member of the PinPals small group.
