At our next guild meeting on Tuesday, March 22, we welcome Rose Hughes who comes to us from Long Beach, California. She says "I'm a California girl. Just one that grew up and was educated in warm, sunny Florida." It wasn't until the early 1990's, that she started quilting. It was only a matter of months before she focused her artwork on quilting. Around 1996 she began to lecture and teach nationally, and exhibit her quiltworks internationally.
The afternoon lecture topic is "Wisdom, Whimsy, and Life in Quilts."
The evening lecture topic is "The Organized Quilter."

Piecetime News
March 2011 |
Greetings!
Uffda, how time flies! Spring is just around the corner and I have seen some very fat robins in our front yard with our cat cackling at them from the sidelines. He is quite the companion when it comes to handwork as well. He can be sleeping downstairs and not paying any attention to what is happening until I have a quilt in my lap ready to work. It would not be so bad if his favorite place wasn't right on top and in the middle of the hoop.
I hope you are looking at the class lists and planning on taking a class from our guests this year. We are very fortunate to have the ability to bring in National Teachers for lectures and classes. We also are so fortunate to have the talent and Teachers in our guild that have moved us into the realm of being very capable of picking up new ideas and running with it. I was able to take the Sue Spargo class and so although I know much about wool and wool applique, I picked up a trick or two and the cost became very worthy of my hard earned dollars. It's what keeps us getting better, keeps us fresh with new techniques, and what great friends I have because I met them at class and yes they shared some of their secrets that work for them. Each year as we go through the process of selecting speakers, we work to get a well-rounded list of classes so everyone can find something they enjoy. We need your support to fill the classes.
Spring Break! Quilt Shop Hops! Small Group Get-Togethers! Quilt Classes! SHOW & TELL AT GUILD MEETINGS! Isn't this a wonderful time of year to get those inspirations going for a new quilt just before the outdoors calls us for gardening, sports, and just sitting outside with a great book.
See you Soon!

Newcomers Meetings
The Newcomers Program for February will be held on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Urbandale Library. Janet Pittman will talk about designing machine applique quilts. The block of the month will be strip piecing which was inspired by February's speaker, Elsie Campbell.
Remember to bring any projects you are currently working on and also your 4 blocks for the Quilt of Valor. We will try to cover any issues you may be having on a current project.
February was a great meeting--Mary Shotwell came with her applique group and showed us beautiful and inspiring quilts.
Show & Tell: members brought finished quilts which were fun to see. Block of the Month: for January it was a 6.5 inch 4-patch made with four 3.5" squares. Two members brought their blocks. The block for February was a rail fence made with three 2.5" x 6.5" strips. Quilts of Valor: newcomers volunteered to make a donation quilt together. Each member took home enough strips to make 4 blocks.
Come and enjoy "with or without show and tell". All members who joined in 2010 and 2011 are welcome. Other Guild members are also welcome to attend. Upcoming Meetings: April 19-Creating with Color with Mary Cecil May 17-Traditional Quilts with JoAnn Belling June 21-Paper piecing with Sharon Meisenheimer July 19-Beyond the Block-Scrap Piecing with Rebecca McCreary and Sara Harless August 16-Machine Quilting with Lynn Witzenberg Sept 20-Finishing Touches: Binding, Squaring Up and Labels with Shirley Loeffler If you have any questions, please call Barb at 515-279-2651. Break-down of Workshop Costs
The Guild's workshops are a great opportunity for members to meet national speakers and to learn new techniques. $50 may sound like a lot of money to spend for a workshop but it is a bargain compared to the fees at national quilt shows. For example, all day workshops at AQS sponsored shows are $75; International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati are $65.
The Guild is committed to providing a variety of workshops for members to attend although it is an expensive venture. To give you an idea of the expenses involved for the workshops (this does not include the fees for the lectures on the Guild's meeting day).
Workshop average fee: $600 per day
Workshop space rental fee: $200 per day
Lodging: $100 per night (usually at least 3 nights)
Meals: $25 per day
Transportation to/from Des Moines: $125 (this is $500 divided: 1/2 allotted to lectures, then divided by 1/2 to get cost for one lecture)
TOTAL: $1050 average workshop cost per day
If 20 members attend the workshop, the average fee the Guild pays per student is $52.50. When fewer members attend, the fee the Guild pays per member is much higher. For example, if only 10 attend, the cost per member is $ 105 per student.
We need more members to attend the workshops to keep the cost down per member. Please consider taking at least one of the workshops coming up. There is still space available in each of the remaining workshops. To register, contact val@grm.net or call her at 641-447-2411.

Community Service
At the March meeting stop by the Community Service table to sign up to attend the first Sewing Day of the year on Monday, April 18th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Urbandale Public Library. Eleven guild members have already signed up so a second room has been reserved in hopes we can double that number! Our goal is to use up a large amount of our stash by making pillowcases for the local shelters and ConKerr Cancer. It would be great if you can join us for the whole day but, if you only have a few hours to spare we can put you to work. We will need members to cut, sew and press. Bring your sewing machines, accessories, and a power strip or extension cord. At noon we will break for lunch--due to the no outside drink or food policy of the library, you may eat in the library café or go out to any of the nearby restaurants.
Carolyn Eliason, Chair Community Service
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
This October school age children will be invited to the Historical Building for their History and Arts Program. For four days the students have five mini classes (30 minutes long) about different historical events or art related things. Do we have a group (or individuals) who would help teach a workshop (one day or all days) about quilting, specifically how it has changed thru the years.
They also are planning a Crazy Quilt Marathon Day in April or May of 2012. This event would take place on a Saturday for the entire day. People would sign up to participate, be placed on a team and construct a crazy quilt top in one day. The quilts would be donated to Foster Children. They would like someone from our guild to help with the planning and running of the event. Since Crazy Quilting is pretty specific, is there a group or individual who would like to help with this project

"Little Quilts" for 2011 Quilt Show
It's another year and another quilt show. This year's show is the end of September 2011. We have to move the time table for completion of "little quilts" for the silent auction up to the July meeting. If you attend the August "Charity Auction", then you can turn in your "little quilts" at that time. Like every other year, the Guild depends on the generosity, great skill and creativity of our members to make outstanding "little quilts". These "little quilts" are a main source of income for our Guild. So, once again, we are asking for your help in contributing to the success of our quilt show by making a "little quilt" for the silent auction.
Leigh Lussie, quilt show member for "Little Quilts"

Kids Classes and State Fair Sew-In
Your Education Committee has been hard at work getting ready for a summer of activities. Our mission as a Guild is to teach people about quilting. Two of our projects are the Kids Classes and the State Fair Sew-In. Both of these projects are successful because of the commitment of many Guild members.
You can be involved in a variety of ways. We need volunteers to help the kids for one or more of the Kids Classes at the public libraries. The dates of these classes are June 20 and 21 in West Des Moines and July 11 and 12 in Pleasant Hill.
The dates of the State Fair are August 11-21. We need 5 associates each day to help the fair-goers make quilts for state wide children's charities.
We also need some help getting ready for these events. We need donations of 2 yard cuts of juvenile fabric to use as backs for both of these programs. We need donations of 1/2 yard or larger pieces of solid color fabric to use for binding.
We need people willing to work at home. We need help to cut fabric into strips and bindings. We will provide you the fabric to cut along with clear directions.
Do any of these opportunities sound good to you? Contact Sharon at Rmeis@aol.com or 515-986-1145 with questions or to volunteer. Become an active member of a Community of Quilters.

2010 President Challenge Winners
There were 10 entries in the 2010 President's Challenge. We will be showcasing 2 entries each month in the newsletter with a picture of the designer and the quilt along with the inspiration for the quilt in the designer's own words.
Anita Gogerty
Winter Wonderland was inspired by living in Iowa all my life. The quite winter walks in the woods, listening to the babbling brook over the rocks. There was a scene on the internet that I got the inspiration to make the quilt.

Jan Hall
I made my first nine-patch baby quilt in the fall of 1999. I quickly began leaning in the direction of art quilts. I find it much more satisfying to create my own designs, than to use a commercial pattern.
My inspiration for this quilt was a photo I took many years ago, of a lone tree on a hill near my sister's acreage in northeast Iowa. The sky and snow backgrounds are little snippetts of many fabrics all fused together and covered with a layer of tulle. I have recently acquired a couching foot for my Bernina, and find it lots of fun to couch yarn, ant this is what I did for the large tree. The smaller "ghost" trees were just thread painted. The cardinals are hand embroidered
