On Tuesday, October 26 the DMAQG will be visited by Vikki Pignatelli.
The afternoon lecture is titled "10 Attributes That Make A Good Quilter Better". What does it take to be a great quilter? Vikki discusses how she learned these attributes the hard way while creating her quilts.
In the evening, Vikki's lecture is "When I Grow Up I Want To Be a Quilter". She will talk about how everything learned from past projects contribute to and enrich her work in quilts today.
Vikki entered the world of quilting in 1991 at the urging of her sister and fellow quilter, Augie Ellis. After attending a beginner's class she fell in love with the art of quilting. Now a fulltime professional quilt-artist, designer, international teacher, lecturer and author, Vikki and her quilts have been featured in many books, national publications and exhibitions. She has won 32 awards in national and international competitions and exhibitions.
Vikki's focus is to inspire, nurture and develop the artistry and self-confidence within each quilter. |
Guild meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church at 8th and Grand, in West Des Moines, Iowa

Piecetime News -- October 2010
|
Greetings!
Wow! What a wonderful quilt show. You did yourselves proud again. I love to walk and see all the quilt exhibits, hit the vendors and then do it all over again! THANKS to all who made it happen. Without all the committee meetings, support, and volunteer efforts it would not be possible. Special THANKS to Barb and Julia for leading the effort this year and to your committee! There are faces and bodies that take a brutal beating every year taking the lead to get quilts hung: Jill, Mary, Lynn, Barb, Diane, and so many others. Please be sure to greet them with your THANKS, it is no small undertaking to make everything look like it's an everyday event. I know I have missed many and my apologies but my mind is so full of ideas with the new tools, fabrics, books, and patterns that made it into my arms and right to the cash register.
Talking about new tools, did you buy one that you could use for the President's challenge! I hope many of you are working on yours now the show is over. Can't waste a minute without something to aim for, can we? Again they will be hung and judged at the December Tea which is on December 4th (which I hope will be a beautiful sunny day and not a WINTER WONDERLAND).
Where did the year go? Don't be shy to call any of the Board Members if you have questions about joining the Guild Board. We have a few spots left and we have a lot of fun! We have board meetings the first Monday of the Month and they last approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Mary Shotwell, Missie Carpenter and I will be meeting and starting our call campaign. Please be nice and eliminate our need to call. Join today!
See you at the October meeting!

Community Service
We hope you stopped to see the Community Service and Kids Corner areas at the Quilt Show. Six large tubs of quilts, placemats, clothing protectors and pillowcases were on display. Thanks again to all guild members who helped us showcase the guild's efforts to reach out to our community.
Most of us know quilters are very caring and trustworthy people but, Reta Stone knows first hand. During the quilt show she somehow lost her billfold and was pleasantly surprised to find it at lost in found with nothing missing! She wanted the guild to know how thankful she was to know there was a caring quilter out there who made her day!
Last month we challenged the members to help empty our tubs of quilt and placemat kits. Thanks to all who took a kit or two. We only have 8 kits left so if you would like to help empty our tubs stop by our area at the next meeting.
We had a message from Brenda Cummer letting us know she picked up 371 pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer at the Des Moines sites earlier this month. If you donated pillowcases--way to go! Brenda said they are hoping to have 150 winter holiday themed pillowcases for a ConKerr Cancer event held in December. They are half way there so if you would like to help them reach their goal bring your donation to the next meeting or drop it off at Creekside or The Quilt Block. Click here to read the newsletter from ConKerr Cancer.
The October meeting is your last opportunity to donate items at a meeting. If you still want to make a donation in November you will need to contact us directly to make your donation. Any item donated after November will be listed as a 2011 donation.
See you on the 26th!

Thank you from Julia and Barb
Wow! What a great show. We have such a talented guild members. We both were in agreement that the workmanship on the quilts this year was exceptional. A big thank you goes out to our members who helped in some way to make it big success. We want to especially thank our show committee members for their talents, suggestions, and hard work this year. You were awesome to work with. We are very appreciative of all our volunteers--the show would not have been a success without you. I especially want to thank Julia for filling in for me during the show (what a great co-chair).
Our addition of the kids corner and touch and feel areas were a big hit with visitors. We heard nothing but compliments from visitors, the vendors, and AQS representatives.
It was a lot of work and then all of a sudden, it was over. We are now in the process of gathering all the necessary information to provide the membership with a final and comprehensive report on the show. We will present that report at the December Tea.
The 2010 Show Committee Members are as follows:
Kathie Anderson Leigh Lussie Kathy Safris
Linda Arndt Tammy Marcsisak Nancy Sharr
Mary Booth Carolyn Magnani Mary Shotwell
Missy Carpenter Mary Martin Andra Sims
Diane Crawford Betty Mathers Diane Thiese
Nan Earll Sue McPhee LoAnn VanHemert
Barb Eckoff Nora Mosher DeAnna Wilson
Donita Fredricks Cindy Ohmart Lynn Witzenburg
Martha Henrichs Jill Reber Lisa Zbylicki
Pat Hjelmeland Kathy Russi

The winner of our Raffle Quilt was guild member Nancy Van Meter. On Monday after the Quilt Show, she met with us and we presented the quilt to her.

Fall Retreat
Join us November 4 - 7 for the Guild's fall retreat at Camp Wesley Woods. There is sure to be plenty of sewing, games, fellowship and fun during the weekend. The form can be found on the Guild's website Fall Retreat. Lisa and Beth will be available at the September and October guild meetings with forms. Remember, registration for housing is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Flyr at dflyr@juno.com or Beth Hromyak at bhromyak@holmesmurphy.com. See you at retreat! Lisa and Beth
Great Opportunity The Retreat Co-Chair(s) position is a great opportunity to meet other quilters, give back to the community, and become a guild committee member. If you love to plan and organize large 'get-togethers' -- this position is for you!
The position can be held by one or two people or even a small group. It is a two-year term; however, it can be divided into one person serving one year with an additional person serving a two-year term. This rotation will make it so that there will always be an experienced person who will be serving on the committee. The fall 2010 retreat will be Lisa and Beth's last retreat as co-chairs. If new volunteers are not found by the Christmas Tea -- the fall retreat will be the last guild retreat. Lisa and Beth |

Little Quilts -- A Huge Thank You!!
For all our members who made those wonderful "little quilts", we thank you! The silent auction was very successful once again this year. We had just under 100 "little quilts" donated by members. We don't have a final tally of the financials, but it will be published later with all the quilt show budget information. Your donations are greatly appreciated and will benefit the guild's programs for next year.
