Upcoming Program
Our Annual Charity Auction and Mall in the Hall will take place on Tuesday,  August 24 at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church at 8th & Grand in West Des Moines. This takes the place of both our regular meetings.
 
The Mall in the Hall opens at 5:30 and the auction begins at 6:00 p.m.

I hope you are working on your President's challenge and thinking of the Winter Wonderland we had earlier this year.  The heat index and water levels continue to bring us inside so what better thing do you have to do but quilt.  Thank goodness for air conditioning.  If there are any of you that procrastinate like me, you  are working to finish the projects you entered into this year's show.  I always need that deadline to get things done.  Peggy has done a tremendous job in lining up lectures and classes to inspire our quilts this year and it has been great to see them at Show and Tell.

 

I hope to see you at the Women's Health Charity Auction on the 24th.  It is always inspiring and awesome to see the work of many hands helping to aid in research and aid those who have health needs.  We are so fortunate to have quilting to share in those challenging times and friends that understand how important it is to hold each other up.  The auction is meant to be an evening of fun and time to share.  Hope to see you there!

Upcoming 2010 Workshops
 

The mission of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educating its members, and provide for the inter-change of information.  (Adopted -- September 20, 2003).

 There are NO classes in August or September. The annual Charity Auction takes place in August and in September members from the Lincoln Quilt Museum will present the program.

Wednesday, October 27 (9am - 4 pm) - CRAZY ABOUT CURVES - Vikki's basic and most popular class. This is a hands-on/in-depth technique using a simple pattern. Explore her piecing/applique method of creating sharp curves and narrow points effortlessly and with precision. This is a technique class for all skill levels.

Thursday, October 28 (9am - 4pm) - IMPROVISATIONAL CURVES - This relaxing, impromptu approach to piecing curves offers students total freedom in quiltmaking. Create several blocks of shapes (circles, ovals, curvy rectangles.....) learn manipulations and how to arrange shapes into a free-form contemporary quilt. All skill levels.

 
Newcomers Meetings 
 
The Newcomers Meeting for August  will be held on Tuesday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Urbandale Library.  Lynn Witzenberg will be discussing machine quilting.
 
Remember to bring your finished projects and the projects you are currently working on. We will try to cover any issues you may be having on a current project.

Annual Charity Auction
 
The Annual Charity Auction to support Women's Health will be on August 24th.  Donations should be delivered to the church by 5:00 pm with your name or the name of the small group making the donation. This is an event that is open to the public. The cause is worthy but what is more important to me and the board is coming together and having a good time. Let's make it a year where there is something for everyone.  All donations are greatly appreciated. To accommodate time the Mall in the Hall will handle all donations with the value of $50 or less.  Here are specifics for the evening:

DONATIONS: Here are ideas for donations: quilts, tools, notions, books, baskets, fabric, kits, patterns, etc. Deliver all items by 5:00 pm on the 24th at the Church. Items should have the name of the group or individual donating the item and a quick note of contents. Please mark the price on the Mall in the Hall items to save time. 

TIME and PLACE:  Mall in the Hall will be in the Fellowship Hall and will start at 5:30 pm. The Auction will be held in the Sanctuary and will begin at 6:00 pm.  Viewing of items will begin at 5:30 pm in the front. Please take time to browse--as much as we hope to show things well through the Auction, it's so much better to see what is there and get a close look.

PAYMENT:  Items for Mall in the Hall must be paid for in the Fellowship Hall. Auction Items will be paid for at the back of the Sanctuary before you leave. You will receive your item when it is won during the bidding process, a scribe will take the description of the item, the amount accepted for the bid, and take the information to the bankers in the back. 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  THANKS to the Bitsy Chicks and So What's small groups for managing the Mall in the Hall.  Additional volunteers are needed: Bid Numbers and Sign In (4:45 and 6:00 shifts), Announcers (6:00 and 7:30), Donation Helpers (5:00), Isle Helpers (5:45), Scribes (5:45), and Runners (5:45). None of these are hard jobs and the work of many hands helps so all can enjoy the fun. Please contact me by e-mail mthiese@aol.com or my cell phone 515-480 5666.

SPECIAL GROUP MEETINGS
 
Evening Applique Society
 

The Society invites anyone who loves to applique, whether by hand or machine, to come and join the group. It doesn't matter if you're an experienced or beginner appliquer. We meet at the Quilt Block on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. We also get together just to have fun and learn from each other.  Any questions please contact Jeannie Murphy at

1800s Quilt Study Group
 
Our group always meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at The Quilt Block. Our next meeting will be August 26th and the study topic will be crib quilts.
