Piecetime News February 2010
|
Greetings!
Personally, I'm loving the email guild newsletters. They actually arrive before the guild meeting. My snail mail printed version of the newsletter finally arrived the day AFTER the January guild meeting.
Each month you will receive TWO newsletters: Piecetime News and Piecetime Programs. Be sure to read and check out the content in both newsletters. You can expect Piecetime Programs to arrive in your Inbox around the second Saturday of each month. Piecetime News should arrive around the third Saturday of each month. From time to time we will send other communications but promise not to overload you with emails.
I'm enjoying the hot links to upcoming speakers' websites and the inclusion of color photos. Don't miss all the forms you can download for things like signing up for workshops and retreats, and the list of board and committee members contact information.
You will want to confirm your interest in continuing to receive the newsletters. This link is found at the top of the newsletter after the message, "You are receiving this email because of your relationship with Des Moines Area Quilters Guild."
If your email address changes or you want the newsletters delivered to a different email address, you can make these changes by going to the UPDATE PROFILE/EMAIL ADDRESS link right after the end of the newsletter.

February Workshops
Please go to the registration page and sign up for these classes today. Join your friends in these fun filled classes.
Marge Pearson will be giving the Wednesday workshop entitled "What Do I Do With my Scraps? #2". Bring your buckets of scraps and actually do something with them. Marge gave this workshop last year and everyone had a marvelous time. Don't miss it, she has something new. There are only 4 openings left for this class.
JoAnn Belling will be giving 2 workshops Thursday.
From 9 am to 4 pm, JoAnn will be doing "Waltzing Nine Patch". In this class, you will overcome your fear of free-hand rotary cutting and learn about weaving, fusing, and raw-edge blocks as you experiment with color and design. Learn how piping adds that little extra pizzazz. Don't miss out making this FUNtastic quilt.
JoAnn states "This is the most exciting, most fun, most free and easiest workshop I teach. Students learn free form cutting, color, weaving, fusible, design, border treatment, and piping."
JoAnn will have available for sale at class: 6 1/2" batik squares, fusible and cording.
From 6 pm to 9 pm, JoAnn's workshop is entitled " Flying Geese in a Brave New World". This is for those who cannot attend a daytime class, and is your opportunity to learn fast and no-waste methods. This workshop will help you easily recognize patterns within patterns. There are only a few spaces left in this evening class.
DIRECTIONS To Legacy Pointe located at 1650 SE Holiday Crest Drive in Waukee: Take Hickman Road (Hwy 6) west of I-35/80 for 3 miles to the intersection of 156th and Hickman Road which has a Dahls and a Walgreens. Continue west a 1/3 of a mile and turn left (south) at the SE Legacy Pointe Blvd street sign (just past Tuffy and before Earl May). Follow it around to a 3-story building. Go around to the back. When you come in the door, turn to your left and the community room is right there. The phone number for Legacy Pointe is 515-987-3625.

2011 Raffle Quilt
The design for the 2011 raffle quilt has been finalized and construction of the quilt will begin soon. A variety of fabrics will give the quilt more interest and dimension, so we are asking Guild members to donate small pieces of fabric to the project.
Needed are 12" squares of yellow, gold, and green prints and fat quarters of brown prints.
Please bring to the February or March meetings. Thanks for your help.

Community Service & Charity Sewing
Our first Charity Sewing Day of the year will be on Tuesday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Library. More information will be available in future newsletters and at our guild meetings.
We are tracking your donations this year so please stop by our table in the narthex area before or after our meetings if you have made items to be donated. On the form please fill in your name and the number of items in each category that you are donating. Top "performers" in each of the following categories will be treated to a luncheon in December: placemats, crib/lap quilts, twin/larger quilts, pillowcases and our newest project, clothing protectors. A pattern was available at the January meeting for the clothing protectors. One alteration needs to be made: instead of using Velcro fasteners please finish them off with a large button hole/button or several large snaps. We have contacted several sites very interested in our donations but they have indicated items with Velcro do not hold up well when laundered numerous times. Please donate any completed clothing protectors you have finished; we can still use them, but make the change in any future projects. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but, sometimes patterns need a little tweaking!! A revised pattern will be available at the February meeting.
We have been asked to list "suggested" sizes for quilts and placemats. Crib quilts seem to vary the most in size, 36" x 45" is a nice size, lap quilts would be 45" x 55", twin quilts are 65" x 95", double quilts 80" x 95", and 13" x 18" makes a nice placemat. Again these are "suggestions"; we will accept any quilt regardless of its size. J
Happy Quilting!

American Heart Association Charity Quilt
It all started with one question to my husband: "How can we have people interact at the retreat?" His response was: "Have them help create a charity quilt." So the idea was born.
The American Heart Association was chosen because we all need a reminder to take care of our heart, they are one of the guild's chosen charities, and who doesn't like the cute red dress?
Our small group, Seams Sew Easy, designed the pattern, cut the fabric and pre-packaged each block. We asked for volunteers at the fall retreat. They were given 36 hours to turn in their completed block(s). We were amazed that the majority of blocks were turned back in within 12 hours. Each volunteer received a 'red dress' pin upon turning in their block(s).
The quilt was assembled and quilted after the retreat. The finished quilt was presented to Elaine Kay from the American Heart Association at the January evening meeting. The quilt was displayed in the East Village the first week in February for a Go Red for Women event. It will also be a part of the Go Red for Women luncheon in September.
I want to thank everyone that took part in the making of this quilt, especially the members of my small group: Dawn Bazan, Teresa Coady, Lisa Flyr, Veronica Koh Eischeid, Emma Thomas-McGinnis, Doris Schmitz, and Tricia Lenz. We are very proud of this beautiful quilt.

2010 Guild Challenge
Are you up to the Challenge? In keeping with the DMAQG 2010 quilt show theme, "A World of Quilts", the Guild's challenge to its membership is "My Personal World of Quilting". The possibilities are endless since you can interpret that to mean "what makes my quilting world go round".
Last year's display of challenge quilts at the quilt show was wonderful, but we hope to surpass even that spectacular showing with many more entries. Jill Reber had the foresight to solicit fabric donations from Moda. The fabrics are all batiks. As in the past, baggies of the three fabrics will be sold at the April meeting for $3. (Proceeds will go toward buying prizes.) There will be only 80 bags, so please buy yours before they are gone. AND complete them!
Here are the rules:
*Use at least two of the three provided fabrics.
*The item must be quilted in some form or fashion.
*Entries may be any size or shape as long as no one side is longer than 45 inches.
*Use something from your stash. (Of course, as soon as you buy it, it'll be part of your stash.)
Also remember that quilts will NOT be judged and should not be entered in the judged category. Please attach a sleeve and a label according to the quilt show's guidelines.
Entries must be registered by the deadline in July and will be part of show-and-tell at the September meeting.
