The theme for this year's President's Challenge is "Winter Wonderland."

The rules for the challenge are as follows:

* Finished quilt size: 40"x30" (horizontal).

* The quilt may be pieced, appliqued, painted, stenciled, or embellished in any manner.

*The finished quilt must consist of three layers.

*The quilt must be constructed and quilted by one person.

* Quilts must be finished (quilted and bound) and hung at the December 2010 Tea, where guild members will vote for the top eight to be entered into the AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge.

At our next guild meeting on Tuesday, February 23, we welcome The Iowa Wild Rose TAG Applique Group. These talented women (many from our own guild) will be giving a talk called "The A Word".  Be prepared to view their applique quilts and admire their fantastic handiwork.

February Workshops

Marge Pearson will be giving the Wednesday workshop entitled "What Do I Do With my Scraps? #2". Bring your buckets of scraps and actually do something with them. Marge gave this workshop last year and everyone had a marvelous time.  Don't miss it, she has something new.  There are only 4 openings left for this class.

 

 JoAnn Belling will be giving 2 workshops Thursday. 

 

 

 From 9 am to 4 pm, JoAnn will be doing "Waltzing Nine Patch". In this class, you will overcome your fear of free-hand rotary cutting and learn about weaving, fusing, and raw-edge blocks as you experiment with color and design.  Learn how piping adds that little extra pizzazz.  Don't miss out making this FUNtastic quilt. 

 

JoAnn states "This is the most exciting, most fun, most free and easiest workshop I teach. Students learn free form cutting, color, weaving, fusible, design, border treatment, and piping."

 

JoAnn will have available for sale at class: 6 1/2" batik squares, fusible and cording.

 
 

From 6 pm to 9 pm, JoAnn's workshop is entitled "

Flying Geese in a Brave New World". This is for those who cannot attend a daytime class, and is your opportunity to learn fast and no-waste methods.  This workshop will help you easily recognize patterns within patterns.  There are only a few spaces left in this evening class.

It all started with one question to my husband: "How can we have people interact at the retreat?"  His response was: "Have them help create a charity quilt." So the idea was born.

 

The American Heart Association was chosen because we all need a reminder to take care of our heart, they are one of the guild's chosen charities, and who doesn't like the cute red dress?

Our small group, Seams Sew Easy, designed the pattern, cut the fabric and pre-packaged each block.  We asked for volunteers at the fall retreat.  They were given 36 hours to turn in their completed block(s).  We were amazed that the majority of blocks were turned back in within 12 hours.  Each volunteer received a 'red dress' pin upon turning in their block(s).

The quilt was assembled and quilted after the retreat.  The finished quilt was presented to Elaine Kay from the American Heart Association at the January evening meeting.  The quilt was displayed in the East Village the first week in February for a Go Red for Women event.  It will also be a part of the Go Red for Women luncheon in September.

I want to thank everyone that took part in the making of this quilt, especially the members of my small group: Dawn Bazan, Teresa Coady, Lisa Flyr, Veronica Koh Eischeid, Emma Thomas-McGinnis, Doris Schmitz, and Tricia Lenz.  We are very proud of this beautiful quilt.
