Dear Fellow Member,

Remember the Annual Meeting in New Canaan on Sunday January 30th. This is a great social event with a pot luck supper. We vote in the Board for the coming year, and also vote in new members to Nutmeg's Club.

Our speaker this year will be Ed Whitney, who is known to us, who compete, as a top level obedience judge, but to the PWD community he is a vital component. Ed owned one of the first PWDs from the First Litter in this country. He bred his PWDS, and more importantly he worked and showed them before most people even knew what a PWD was... Ed will be talking about his early experiences in the breed and about competing with them, and he still owns two PWDS!

Come and join us - there will be merchandise to buy, and lots of people to chat with!

More details will follow.

Nutmeg PWDC Water Trial Report - 2010

Submitted by Jane Freeman

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nutmeg's August Water Trials were held on August 21 & 22 at Dick and Julie Kraus' in Monroe, CT.  Saturday was a beautiful day but unfortunately Sunday's weather was not as nice. The club generously provided lunch for all participants and after Saturday's trial the BBQ dinner gave everyone a chance to relax and enjoy the company of fellow water enthusiasts.
Thank you to Dick and Julie Kraus for allowing us the use of their property not only for the Trial but for Nutmeg's summer long water training. Their generosity is amazing.
Many thanks to our judge Cathy Gadd. Positive and with kind words for each exhibitor, we also got some good training tips. We were lucky to have her do the honors.
Thanks also to Cheryl Rutz as Chief Steward for keeping the show running and to all the stewards who helped; and to Jane Harding and Patty Hobin for making sure everyone was well fed through out the weekend.
There were some beautiful qualifying performances and some very close "not yets", some first timers and some old hands, it was good to see you all.
On September 11 & 12, Nutmeg ran a second water trial for the first time in 3 years.  This one was held at Batterson Park in Farmington, CT. We had glorious weather on Saturday while Sunday was cold and windy but at least the rains held off.
Suzanne Malick did the honors and did a wonderful job judging, supportive of all the teams, helpful with training advice, Suzanne judged a full complement of teams and was always smiling and upbeat. There were some beautiful qualifying performances and some very close ones. I think many went home thinking of what their dry land training would be this Winter.
Our thanks to all who stepped up to help when needed, we couldn't do it without you.
My Experience at the PWDCA National Specialty
Specialty 2010 was at the Embassy Suites - a very nice hotel, albeit a tad expensive - in San Luis Obispo CA. SLO, as it's known, is rather a pain to get to, and we (Terri Pecora and I) decided to forgo the three hour drive from San Francisco or Los Angeles and fly straight to SLO. Ah,,. not such a sensible decision when you are travelling with a puppy in a Sherpa Bag and have 10 minutes to make a connection in Phoenix! We made it because the SLO flight was late.
Emerging from the airport at 10:15 pm or so we met...
For the second year in a row, Nutmeg participated in Meet the Breeds at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Sponsored by the American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers' Association, breed clubs came together to promote Responsible Pet Ownership and educate the public. Over 150 American Kennel Club Parent Clubs participated. Our Nutmeg volunteers and their dogs welcomed 39,000 visitors over the weekend of October 16th and 17th. Lent to us by The PWDCA and adapted to the space by Marie Forgach and Ylisa Kunze, our booth wasdecoratedto reflect the Portuguese Water Dog's heritage, characteristics and unique attributes as a family companion.
-- Labrador Retriever Remains America's Most Popular Dog as German Shepherd  A Move For The Top Spot --
-- Breeds That Help Keep Us Safe Dominate the Top 5 --
New York, NY - For the 19th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America, but could this be the last year for the Lab's reign?
According to American Kennel Club® (AKC) 2009 registration statistics released today during a press conference at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, the German Shepherd Dog overtook the Yorkshire Terrier last year and is now ranked second most popular in the nation for the first time in more than three decades.
An American favorite since the time of Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd Dog became the number one breed of the 1920s, but then slipped in popularity until after World War II.
The dog is the most varied mammal on the planet. The variety is a direct result of "human tinkering"
The dog is the most varied mammal on the planet. The variety is a direct result of human tinkering - or artificial selection - that began more than 15,000 years ago, when humans began selecting traits they wanted or needed in their canine companions.
  • The world's fastest breed of dog, the Greyhound has an astounding heart. A 65-pound greyhound's heart is about the same size as that of a human athlete weighing twice as much, yet the running greyhound's heart rate beats twice as fast as the running human's: about 310 to 340 beats/minute vs. 170 to 210 for the human.
  • The only animal that can accelerate faster than a greyhound over a short distance is a cheetah.
