Dear Fellow Member,

Welcome aboard to Issue #1 of our quarterly eNewsletter. If you are pressed for time, take a moment to read what's On The Horizon so you don't miss out on something wonderful you can do or see with your Porty.

Got a few minutes? Read the articles in the Ship's Log for important health information or simply to be entertained by the history of our Presidential Dogs. Bo! Bo who?

We hope you enjoy reading our club's first eNewsletter and we invite comments and submissions for future issues.

We need two things, valuable information about the breed we love and, of course, those wonderful stories and pictures that chronicle their exploits. If you haven't figured it out, they are officers and we are the crew.

Best regards,

Jane Harding

p.s. A special thanks to goes to Patty Hobin and Nick Ceppi who prepared the content and created the design for Issue#1.

Lessons Learned at my First PWD Dog Show

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GreenwichGenlSpecBy Patti L Cox
Running late, I bounded into the Greenwich Kennel Club dog show that Saturday morning, full of anticipation and enthusiasm for my first PWD dog show.  The first puppy I saw was, Freestyle The Wiz ("Oz"), a full brother to my puppy, Freestyle Take Me Along ("Finne").  He was getting ready to  go into the ring and I blurted out, "That's Oz, I'm so glad to meet him" and was politely told, "This isn't a good time to meet Oz!"
Lesson #1:  Watch the volume of your voice while sitting ringside!  Even though it may look like a socializing place to be (close to where the dogs are lining up to go into the ring), one must possess a certain decorum in order to not disrupt the dogs and/or the handlers waiting to enter the ring.  Furthermore,
Yearly CERF Exams. Why Are They Important?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DogEyeExamBy:Sheryl Krohne, DVM, MS  Diplomate ACVO, ACVO Genetics Committee/CERF Liaison

One of the most frequently asked questions at CERF is "Why is the CERF certification only valid for one year"? The reason is that some eye diseases in all breeds of dogs can occur at several ages. For example, if you take your dog to have a CERF examination when it is 8 weeks old, many diseases can be diagnosed. These diseases will not progress and once they have been diagnosed, they will not disappear or "go normal" in future examinations.

Presidential Purebreds Rule the White House

By Niki Marshall © 2010 The American Kennel Club, Inc.

From George Washington's Foxhounds to Barack Obama's Bo, presidential purebred pups are as traditional as baseball and apple pie.
Twenty-two U.S. presidents have owned purebred dogs and most shared the White House with them. While some dogs had jobs - Millie authored a book, Him and Her modeled for Life magazine, and Laddie Boy oversaw high-level meetings from his hand-carved cabinet chair - all were well-loved not only by their devoted owners but also by their country.

DixieHdShtMelinda Miller Presents Dixie's Chicks!

Now there's cute and then there are Portuguese Water Dog puppies. Now, THEM'S cute! On July 5, long time Nutmeg PWD Club member and past Secretary and Treasurer, and current Membership Chairperson Melinda Miller, presided over the birth of 6 puppies out of her bitch, Dixie. They were immediately given the name Dixie's Chicks, and members who could claw their way on to the distribution list got to see a weekly photo chronicle of these beautiful puppies (who all have homes). Since the editor of this eNewsletter was one of those lucky people, here are some of his favorites.
