Greetings!
Donations Critical to Help Feed Hungry Children During Summer Months
One out of every four children under the age of five goes to bed hungry every night in South Carolina. And we at Harvest Hope know that number is likely to increase over the summer months.
With schools closed for the summer at-risk children who usually get free or reduced priced breakfast and lunches at school will lose those meals for the next three months. This places an added burden on their already financially hard-pressed parents. These households will now have to come up with two additional nutritious meals per child per day, and for many the burden is difficult if not impossible.
We are asking everyone to think about the children in their community. Children don't understand economics and unemployment, and they really shouldn't need to. They only understand when they are hungry.

You can help us by donating canned goods like soup, vegetables, meat products and fruit. Peanut butter (in plastic jars) is an incredibly nutritious and valuable staple, as well as easy-to-prepare dry goods like boxed macaroni and cheese. You can drop off these items at our food bank at 2220 Shop Road or call us at 254-4432, tell us where you live and work and we can let you know where there is a food drive convenient to you. Or if you'd like the convenience of donating right from your own desk, kitchen table or easy chair, then check out our Gift Catalog. Go to our website at www.harvesthope.org and click on the "Shop Now" button. The gift catalog lets you pick where you want your donation to go. Every dollar donated turns into 7 pounds of food, or ten meals. Just $36 will feed a family of four for one month. Just $108 will feed a family of four for three months. All summer!

The event raised $28,800 for local charities due to great support from the local running community and many other community partners. Race proceeds went to aid the fight against hunger and homelessness in the Midlands by benefiting Alston Wilkes Society, St. Lawrence Place, Family Shelter and Harvest Hope Food Bank.
The race committee is already hard at work planning next year's race to be held at the Village at Sandhill on April 16, 2011.

First Annual Shag Extravaganza Collects $5,000 and 416 Pounds of Food
The "Capital City Shag Extravaganza" hosted by the Capital City Shag Club, Columbia, SC was a huge success! The first ever dancing event was held on March 26 & 27, 2010 at the Medallion Center on Garners Ferry Rd. Capital City Shag Club president Bob Mergle and Tri-chair Marie Kiesel were happy to present a check for $5,000.00 to Harvest Hope CEO Denise Holland. The generous donation represents the combined contributions of the club members and a portion of the profits from the opening night's party. In addition to the monetary donation 416 pounds of food were gathered at the event and donated to Harvest Hope. Shag dancing is a cultural phenomenon that says so much about South Carolina and brings joy to so many in our state. It is fantastic that an event providing this much pleasure to Capital City Shag Club members was also instrumental in providing the valuable gift of food for those in our community who could use a little joy and kindness. The Capital City Shag Extravaganza II will be held on March 25 & 26, 2011 at the Medallion Center. Everyone is welcome to attend.
