A lot of our friends have the same names and the office is getting confused when we file daily seeds. We now have 3 Max's, 2 Sienna's , 2 Mia's and many common names that are duplicated as well. Please include last initial on your daily seeds going forward.

We love our parents but we do ask you respect the 6pm closing policy. Our teachers work hard throughout the day to keep your little one safe and nurtured and educated all day. At 6pm we should be locking the doors so our teachers can get some much needed rest. Please plan accordingly if you would like extra time to speak with your teacher. |

Greetings!
Happy Birthday Little Green Tree House! We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our parents and staff whom have been with us since our doors opened on July 7th of 2009 and to those whom have grown with us throughout this remarkable first year. It doesn't seem long ago when I was sending out emails to perspective parents stating "we are almost open, really we are getting close." One year has flown bye! And what a year it has been. We have infants transitioning to the toddler classrooms and toddlers transitioning to the Advanced Toddlers and so on... how everything can change in just twelve months. Our staff has grown at a rapid pace because our parents have supported us through this tremendous first year.

We hope you enjoy the newsletter this month. Warmest Regards, Elizabeth Geldhof Director of Business Operations

Ways to Help Get Your Child to Listen Erin Lyon- Director of Education
As a parent of a young child one of the most challenging things you will have to learn is communicating in a way that your child will listen to you.
To get your child to listen, think carefully about exactly how you communicate. Subtle differences in words, tone and body language may effect whether your child tunes in or out!
Tone of voice
-
How you say something is as important, if not more important, than what you say.
-
Use an up-beat, encouraging, and positive tone as much as possible.
-
When indicating limits, sound definite and confident. Any hint of uncertainty and you're more likely to be ignored, debated (But "please, can't I just..."), or guilt-tripped ("It's so unfair").
-
To indicate disapproval, use a firmer, lower, authoritative tone, but don't shout.
-
Avoid nagging. Ask once nicely, once firmly and then take action. If you typically repeat yourself several times before your take action, your child will learn to ignore your initial requests.
Body language
Words
-
Use clear commands and keep requests brief and to the point. Limit yourself to a few important words (e.g. "8 O'clock. Bedtime").
-
Avoid accusing ("you never listen!"), or threatening ("if you don't hurry up, then I'll leave without you").
-
Avoid phrasing which implies that cooperation is an option!"Shall we...?" "Could you..." gives your child a get out clause (i.e. "No!") Instead, make requests.
Listen to your child
-
Before you can expect your child to listen, you need to ensure you really listen to your child.
-
As a parent, the pressure of all the many things that need to get done can sometimes make it hard to listen. But when a child is not feeling listened to, they are more likely to whine, shout or throw a tantrum to get your attention.
-
Careful listening shows that you respect your child's feelings and gives her space to explore a problem and, often, find her own solution. Being listened to can cause difficult feelings to evaporate...cue less moaning, less tantrums, less tears. Most importantly, if you listen to your child, he/she is more likely to listen to you.
Things to remember: Be realistic. It will take time for your kids to become better listeners, and it may very well take you time to learn to stay calm. In the meantime, be on the lookout for small improvements and make sure you praise your child for the times they do listen.

Parent's have a Responsibility in a Daycare Setting Elizabeth Geldhof - Director of Business Operations
Contributors: Parent in our Advanced Toddler room, Erin Lyon - Director of Education, Sarah Stiltner - Assistant Director of Education
It is that time of year when many families are thinking of enrolling their children for the fall. There are few things to think about and actions to be taken before enrolling in any daycare. AT LGTH, our goal is to create a partnership with you so we can work together to guide your child's growth and development while in our care at LGTH. It is our primary focus and responsibility to provide a safe and healthy educational environment. In order to do that... we also need your help!
Initiating transition to the Little Green Tree House can start at home. If you have been the primary caregiver until this point, or your child has been home with a nanny, you may want to think about how you might help to prepare your child for their new and exciting experience. Here are some important things that you can do in advance to help your child:
-
Infants - allow your child to self sooth. This may be via sleep training and/or separation from a parent.
-
Toddler - conform to one nap (ideally 12:15P -2:15P, eating table food, walking, not dependent on a bottle (practicing using utensils and a regular cup. not dependent on being rocked to sleep).
-
Advanced toddler - not dependent on pacifier
-
Three Year old - potty trained
- Talk about School... it is a new adventure... give it a little positive hype at home!
At times families may find balancing the challenges of starting child care and the knowledge of your little one getting older difficult and trying. Please do not let those feeling discourage you from the wonderful experience you will receive while at LGTH. It is important as a family to understand LGTH will do everything in its power to make the transition as smooth as possible while you are away. It is important to remember that as a parent you have the biggest influence on your child's transition to school. Children have the ability to sense your fears, anxiety and emotions, so it is in the best interest of your child to stay positive and strong and support them through this process. The degree of success throughout this transition process as well as for many years to come, will be dependent upon the partnership and willingness for you to participate in the child care environment. Positive reinforcement of the decision to join the Little Green Tree House family is necessary to start the process of transition.
Additional ways you can prepare yourself and your little one to join the Little Green Tree House family:
-
Be honest with your feelings as a parent: Growing up is a fantastic, fascinating time.
-
Think of all of the great, new and exciting times you and your little one will be able to enjoy because of the independence, knowledge and skills which will be exploding before your eyes in just a few weeks time.
Special item: If old enough have your little one pick out a special blanket or "lovey" just for school to have during nap time. This can be a special moment to discuss what will be coming up soon...a wonderful new growing and learning experience at school!
Routine adjustment: Start setting the routine of what it will be like for the commute to and from school for you and your little one before the first day.
Set a time to visit your classroom for an hour once, twice or three times before you officially start your enrollment. Spending time with you in the classroom helps your child know that this is a place that is safe.
Be considerate of the classroom and teachers - though transition is difficult it is not a time where the teachers can provide all of their attention to you and your child, as they have other children like yours to teach and care for.
Trust the process - we have a lot of happy little one's at Little Green Tree House. Some children adjust more quickly than others, but if you have patience and build a good relationship with your child's teachers, your child too, will successfully complete the transition. Since your child is special in his or her own way, it is important not to compare your child's transition to any other, as all children respond differently.
Little Green Tree House's primary concern is the well-being of your child. The process of transition takes time. Feel free to communicate constructively with the teachers or other staff about any difficulties along the way. Our teachers are there for you and are excited about caring for your child. |

Eco -Friendly Choices: Insect Repellent
Elizabeth Geldhof, Director of Business Operations
I have often used a popular, over-the-counter brand of insect repellent on the golf course and at my home. Every time I spray it, I get a whiff of it and sneeze and, believe it or not, so does Gizmo! My little Papillion actually runs away from me know when I use it. I have even used it to kill ants! So if it can kill ants, what is it doing to me? There are lots of different eco-friendly brands out there to choose from and some homemade recipes, too! I have even seen a few garden stores advertising specific plants which deter mosquitoes. I have to say though, if I'm on the go, Badger™ Insect repellent is my first choice.. With the extreme heat and humidity of the summer, I have really put my new eco-friendly insect repellent to the test. It works and it smells great!
