Earth Day - April 22

Elizabeth Geldhof , Director of Business Operations

April is upon us. Thank goodness, as the winter has been long and cold. In our preparations for summer we will be utilizing the lovely spring sunshine and rain to start our organic garden. The toddlers, advanced toddlers and three year olds will be playing a huge part in the garden this year. All classrooms will be sowing seeds for a salad medley: lettuce, corn, radish, peppers, and tomatoes. April will culminate in a lot of little transplants which they will then plant and then maintain in the garden this summer. The benefits to the children will be insurmountable. They are starting from seed and will continue the entire process through harvest. It will truly be their garden.

April is also the month in which we celebrate Earth Day. On April 22 Earth Day will be celebrated for the 40th time! We have come so far to recognize the benefits of saving our planet. We still have work to do but that is where Little Green Tree House comes in. Little Green Tree House is on the fore- front of what businesses should be doing. It is pretty easy after you research vendors and stick with the model. The benefits are huge with quality air control, low waste, organic, local food and recycling of all materials possible. It benefits the business but more importantly the children.

Mark your calendars for our EARTH DAY PARTY at the Little Green Tree House on THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010 @ 3:30pm. It will be another great meet and greet with new parents and a time where the students can show off their special projects which will be on display.  Look out for sign-up sheets in your classrooms. We hope you can make it.

Still Growing Strong

Sarah Stiltner - Assistant Director of Education

Little Green Tree House is happy to announce that we added a few new teachers to our wonderful school.  Please take a moment to read a mini bio on each of our three new employees:

Kaitlyn is from New York City and moved to the Midwest to attend college at Indiana University.  While at Indiana University, she pursued a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.  Kaitlyn relocated to Chicago to complete an internship as a 1st grade teacher in Rogers Park.  During the summer months while she was not in school or teaching, she held a job as a nanny.  Kaitlyn is currently working as the Assistant Teacher in our Peach classroom.

Kelly will be the Lead Teacher in our Maple classroom, which is our third Advanced Toddler classroom to open. Kelly is originally from the United Kingdom and moved here when she was a child.  She grew up in the Midwest and attended college at Aurora University.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education.  Before coming to LGTH, Kelly was a Lead Teacher for three and four year olds at a pre-school in her home town.

Due to Miss Christy leaving to pursue her Master's Degree, Courtney is the newest teacher in the Spruce classroom.  Courtney graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications. Courtney also attended Northern Illinois University where she studied Early Childhood Education.  Courtney has experience working with children as a camp counselor and assistant teacher.

More exciting news....

We are excited to announce that we have recently promoted one of our Assistant Teachers into a Lead Teacher position.  Whitney was the Assistant Teacher in our Toddler Peach classroom, and is now the Lead Teacher in our third toddler classroom; Plum. Whitney welcomed three new children into the Plum classroom this month (with many more new faces to come).  Whitney's qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree from Purdue University where she studied Psychology and Child Development.  She also has previous experience working with children of all different ages. Whitney has proven herself to be a dedicated and caring professional.  She has shown growth in all educational innovations since she first started working at LGTH last summer. Congratulations, Miss Whitney!

LGTH and Peer Relationships at Different Ages
Erin Lyon, Director of Education

Children's peer relationships are an important part of early childhood and are essential to concurrent and future psychosocial adjustment. Experienced through group activities or one-on-one friendships, they play an important role in children's development, helping them to master new social skills and become acquainted with the social norms and processes involved in interpersonal relationships. In the company of others, youngsters become individuals in their own right, gaining insight into their own personalities, observing what effects their behaviors have on others, and refining their self-concepts through social interactions with peers.  Peers, in fact, provide the child with direct feedback about how well she or he is doing in the academic, social and emotional realms, information that can significantly influence the child's self esteem. As children grow from infants into preschoolers their attachment to peers increases, and their social relationships become closer, more frequent, and more sustained.

Many researchers have studied loneliness in children and adults (Allen, 1989; Asher, Parkhurst, Hymel & Williams, 1990; Bowlby, 1977; Bullock, 1993; Cassidy & Asher, 1992; Roland & Lawhon, 1994). The value of having friendships is often overlooked or underestimated. Children who do not develop the characteristics necessary for maintaining social attachments are more likely to have health problems, emotional distress and personality disturbances in adulthood (Bowlby, 1977).

The staff here at Little Green Tree House knows how vital and important these friendships and relationships are to a child's development.  Everything the teachers do plays an integral part in creating these essential relationships and interactions.

As your child grows from an infant to a preschool age child some of the changes you will start to observe in their interactions with others include:

Infancy (Birth-2 years)

What You Might Observe:

· Growing interest in other infants in the same child care setting.
· Beginning attempts to make contact with familiar infants, such as looking at their faces and smiling at them.
· In second year, side-by-side play with awareness of one another's actions.
· Increased interest in interacting with other children and seeking out reactions from other children during play.

Early Childhood (2-5 years)

What You Might Observe:

· Increasing frequency and complexity of interactions with familiar peers
· Developing preference for play activities with particular peers
· Formation of rudimentary friendships based on proximity and easy access (e.g., formation of friendships with neighbors and preschool classmates)
· Involved conversations and imaginative fantasies with friends

Some of the ways in which we promote and guide children in developing the basic skills that form friendships here at Little Green Tree House include

  • Creating an environment where a child feels comfortable and safe in developing friendships
  • Encouraging childen to try new things and supporting them in all that they do whether it is successful or not
  • Modeling acceptable social skills for children. Teaching them proper play skills.
  • Demonstrating and encouraging the idea of taking turns.
  • Helping children deal with anger management and daily frustrations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate ways for them to express their feelings.
We hope you find your child's interactions becoming increasingly more productive throughout their time at Little Green Tree House.

Eco-Friendly Choices

SoadStream® website

I just had to share this product with everyone - I was in awe over a weekend by a counter top machine at a relatives' house. It is called the Sodastream®

It makes sense, it works and it will save a ton of bottles from landing into our landfills or our over flowing recycling centers in our house alone. Yes, you read it right, over flowing recycling centers. Some cities and states cannot get rid of their "to be" recycled content fast enough and it is causing another problem. Knowing the recycling centers are backed up, the next best thing we can do is use less to waste less and create a lesser burden on the recycling plants.

The SodaStream® will help my household save at least one case of aluminum cans and one case of vitamin water bottles from going to waste each week. The calculations for one: two person household is staggering at 2,496 containers at least are being thrown out one way or another. With the SodaStream® I will not be wasting any extra cans or bottles nor will I sacrifice my urge for diet soda, seltzer or vitamin water ...  AND it doesn't use electricity!!

Read below from SodaStream® website:

How Does SodaStream Help the Environment?

SodaStream® is an "Active Green" product, meaning that consumers are actively reducing their CO2 footprint every time they make soda or sparkling water at home instead of buying it from the store. The more the system is used on a daily basis, the more CO2 footprint the user actively saves. (This differs from "Passive Green" products, which use green-friendly production processes, but their products are not inherently helping the consumers save on their daily footprint).

Because SodaStream® uses water straight from the tap, the system makes traditional store-bought beverage bottles obsolete. That means less plastic manufactured, less plastic waste is created, and fewer bottled beverages must be transported from manufacturers to distributors to stores to homes.

Globally, 206 billion liters of bottled water were consumed in 2008 (Zenith International Global Bottled Water Report, 2008). The energy required to make water bottles in the US only, is equivalent to 17 million barrels of oil (Container Recycling Institute, 2002).

According to the US Recycling Institute, more than 80% of bottles in the US do not get recycled and end up in landfills. Also, an estimated 4.7 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions were produced in the process of replacing the 134 billion bottles and cans not recycled in 2005.

Using your own home carbonation system means:

  • Less packaging waste from cans and bottles.
  • Less pollution caused by transport of bottled beverages.
  • One SodaStream® carbonator makes 60 or 110 liters, equivalent to 170 or 310 aluminum cans!
  • When empty, the carbonator is refilled and reused, ready to make more fizzy and tasty soda whenever you want it.

Now, you can enjoy the best tasting soda on the planet ... and it's as easy as making coffee!

  • Save space with concentrated soda mix and reusable carbonating bottles
  • No more lugging and storing heavy, bulky bottles and cans
  • No more hassles with empties in the trash or recycling bin
  • No batteries, no electricity, no plumbing
  • Over 30 flavors at the touch of a button
