Press Release December 2009
Wine at altitude
Air Sommeliers Chateau, the pioneer Wine Tasting company in France, and Vueling, Spain's new generation airline, are pleased to announce that the world record of the highest wine tasting in the world has been broken.

Paris, 30th November 2009. Tasting a good wine is not just a question of taste, from now on it's also a question of altitude...
Welcome aboard the first wine tasting flight...

Last Friday, the commercial Paris-Barcelona flight VY8034 took off punctually at 10:40am from Orly Airport with a mixed atmosphere of originality and curiosity. Tasting glasses in place, sommeliers in full dress on board and an air of discovery for the passengers; this is without a doubt a special flight. Having reached cruising speed, the tasting at altitude begins, lead by Olivier Magny, the young sommelier and founder of Chateau.AIr Wine box

When the plane reaches 36,000 feet, the wine is served to the passengers. Olivier Magny, equipped with a microphone headset, presents and directs the class which teaches the art of wine tasting. The passengers, half-amazed, half-amused, taste with enthusiasm. Three wines are tasted. All Spanish: D.O. Ras Baixas - Albario, a red wine D.O. Peneds - Cabernet Sauvignon and another red D.O. Montsant - Syrah-Grenache. (D.O. stands for Denomination de Origen, the equivalent of the French A.O.C.).

This flight was also an occasion to make a little list of comparisons between French and Spanish wines. Is was also the opportunity for the French passengers to learnt that Spain should soon become the world's top wine producer. And the opportunity for the Spanish passengers to discover that astonishingly 45% of French women never drink wine. Another snippet of information given by Olivier Magny was that at 36,000 feet, the effects of alcohol are multiplied by three!

Girl pouringSo a merry crowd got out of the plane in Barcelona after this out-of-the-ordinary flight which is was not only a world first, but also the moment for Chateau to announce the opening of Chateau Barcelona in January.

Linda Moreira, Country Manager of Vueling in France, states "we are delighted to be able to offer to our passengers and new, rewarding and cultural experience like this wine tasting, which only Vueling could offer". On his part, Olivier Magny affirms "this tasting suits the spirit of Chteau perfectly: discovering wine in an innovative and playful manner and continuing to rouse with a smile the beautiful sleeping giant that is the French world of wine".

About Vueling
Vueling AisleVueling, the new generation Spanish airline company, took flight on the 1st July 2004 with a Barcelona - Ibiza flight with the objective to offer the client an excellent service at competitive prices. Vueling burst onto the market with the intention of introducing a new concept of air transport, and became the first new generation airline company in Europe.

It is now five years that the company has continued to surprise the air sector by organising many innovative events which communicate the spirit of Vueling. Furthermore, the planes of the fleet have been, after several trade-ins, the setting of these initiatives. These include: a high fashion runway show of the Showroom Barcelona during Paris Fashion Week, a classical music concert from Barcelona's Liceu Chamber Orchestra, a representation of Cirque du Soleil, an electronic music session with DJ David Guetta on a debut Paris - Ibiza flight, and also a representation of the Vagina Monologues to celebrate Women's Day.

On the 15th July of this year, Vueling merged with Clickair, and now connects 40 destinations. Since its debut flight in 2004, the company has transported more than 25 million passengers. It is present at 45 main airports, of which 6 (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Bilbao and Valencia) are the airline's operational bases. Its fleet is made up of 35 Airbus A-230.
