Solar Powered Groceries Anyone?
Food City Sees Bright Future in Solar

Piney Flats, Tennessee - Scanners are beeping, freezers are humming, and LEDs are shining - and the sun is powering! On December 23, 2011, Food City's retail grocery chain began supplementing its power use with a brand new, state-of-the-art, solar PV system on its roof. LightWave Solar's recently expanded Tri-Cities office worked closely with Food City on the design, installation and system commissioning.
The new 51 kilowatt system will produce a minimum of 64,918 kilowatt hours in its first year, offsetting the heating and cooling costs of the 43,896 square foot store in Piney Flats. To put it another way, this is enough energy to power the refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, clothes washers, stoves and microwaves for 24 families for one year!
LightWave Solar is proud to partner with Food City for many reasons, among them, their promotion of green living. Food City purchases locally grown produce which saves 82,600 miles of driving and 16,520 gallons of fuel annually. Food City also has a strong commitment to recycling, using fluorescent light bulbs inside its stores and high-efficiency LED's in exterior signage.
Food City and LightWave Solar are proud to have worked together to build the largest solar system in the Johnson City Power Board area.
