A Little Preakness History:

Although Survivor is recorded as the winner of the first Preakness Stakes, it was himself -- a horse named Preakness -- who established Preakness Stakes history.

In 1873, the Maryland Jockey Club was able to put together its first full spring race meeting. The MJC honored the first winner of the "Dinner Party Stakes", Preakness, by naming its 1-1/2 miles competition for three-year-olds after him.
