Tiger Times at Spring Woods                    November 2011

Greetings!

We are quickly coming to the end of the first semester. This is a critical time for students to be focusing on their classes as there are a lot of grades to be earned between now and the semester exams in December. I strongly suggest that every student and parent look at the last report card and set goals for the grades you want to earn for the semester. The first report card grade represents 40% of the semester average which means that 60% is yet to be determined. We will have a parent meeting on November 29 and we would like for everyone to be there to get important information.

Now that football and volleyball seasons are over, we now move into basketball season. I hope you will all come out and support our boys and girls teams as they go through their seasons. We also have our Theater Department performing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe beginning November 17-21.

Parents of our 2014 graduating class,

Although it seems early to be thinking about Senior Prom and Project Prom (the all night lock-in event that occurs directly after Prom), it is time! In order to give our kids a safe place to enjoy the night after Prom, we need to make this event a special time for them. Project Prom takes a lot of time, planning, fundraising and leadership. We need you to get involved. There are many ways to be involved. There is something for all of us to do. There are small jobs for people who work and are busy, so please don't shy away....you are important to us! Our next meeting will be on December 5th at 6:30 in the school library. Please try to make it.

SWHS PP 2014 will communicate to you in several ways. We will put reminders in the Tiger Times, e blast, emails and a facebook page. Our facebook page is a group page dedicated to sharing information with the class of 2014 at SWHS regarding the Project Prom event. Only those who join the group can see posts. Please join facebook at: SWHS Project Prom 2014.

We hope to see you on facebook and at the December 5th meeting!

Tuesday, November 29 @ 6:00 p.m.Virtual HS

Dr. Robert Faber from The Virtual High School of SBISD, will spend the first few minutes of our Parent Meeting discussing the programs available to Spring Woods High School students. There are unique opportunities available for your child to receive high school credit(s), including academic and AP classes. The Virtual High School is one of a few in the State of Texas and they service students throughout our state in academic areas that range from social studies to English to science to mathematics. All of the courses have been approved by the Texas Virtual Network (TEA) and meet the highest national standards for online coursework. And, many if not most, of these virtual classes are FREE to SBISD families!

For a brief online tour of the school and programs available, visit the website at http://vhs.springbranchisd.com/Home/tabid/21722/Default.aspx. We do hope you will make this Parent Meeting a priority in your schedule and join us on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m.

Support our Tiger Athletes!

The Spring Woods High School Athletic Booster Club would like to invite you to join our efforts to support our Tiger Athletes.

Our Booster Club has the biggest fans and are always there to support our sports programs.  The boosters ensure the concession stands are stocked for our spectators, have spirit items to show your Tiger pride, and cook those delicious sausages on a stick at the tailgate parties!  Equally important, we also provide financial assistance for equipment and uniforms, plus items such as coaching clinics and A/V equipment to film our football games.

Not only do we financially support our school's programs, we make certain our athletes receive the recognition they deserve.

By joining the Booster Club, you'll help raise scholarship funds for deserving students.  Each year, our Booster Club proudly presents scholarships to Tiger athletes that excel in their sport, leadership, and academics.

Calling ALL Tiger Moms & Dads

Let's fill up our sidelines, stands and bleachers and show our TIGER SPIRIT!   Attendance at games and events by parents, family, and friends is one of the many ways you can support our athletes.

The Booster Club sponsors and participates in many activities throughout the school year and can always use an extra hand.  We'll give you plenty of opportunities to fit us into your schedule, so please consider volunteering as your schedule allows.  Check out what we do and how you can help:

  • Sports Banquets - help organize, cater, or decorate the fall, winter or spring athletic banquets
  • Concession stands - take your turn selling concessions for games or events
  • Spirit Items - help sell school spirit items at games or events
  • Programs - Solicit advertising, use your talent to create the program, or help sell the program to our Tiger fans
  • Golf Tournament - the biggest fundraiser of the year and we need LOTS of hands.   Play on your own, sponsor a team, or help with the auction and dinner.  Scheduled for April 1, 2012
  • Tiger Moms - help provide and organize something special for our athletes before games or pep rallies

Remember your volunteer hours count towards your student's community service hours.

Sign up and support the Athletic Booster Club here!

Do you recognize the man in the center of this photo

with the SWHS Gold Baseball Cap?

t
He can be found almost any weekend (winter, spring, summer or fall) working tirelessly on our baseball or softball fields. The face under the Gold Cap belongs to Tommy Martinez, the SBISD November 2011 Volunteer of the Month. Tommy has been unselfishly giving SWHS most of his free time for longer than most of us can remember. Since he graduated from Spring Woods in 1984, it clearly has been over 20 years of service. His volunteer duties include maintenance of the baseball & softball fields, running the concessions stands for baseball & softball, coaching during offseason for baseball & softball, statistician during football games, working the clock during volleyball and basketball games, and many, many other duties for the campus, athletic programs and athletic booster club. You can be assured that if you cut Tommy, he will bleed Black & Gold.

The SWHS Administration, Teachers, Coaches, Students, Parents and volunteers (especially the Athletic Booster Club members) would like to thank Tommy Martinez for his dedication to SWHS and its traditions and congratulate him on this long-overdue honor. And as Tommy always says, GO TIGERS!
